Affordable housing is an important issue in our city and it is essential that there is reasonable provision for both shared ownership housing and social housing.

It is a shame that the Green administration did not consider this properly during their four years in office.

Loans from the Public Works Loans Board could have been put towards housing projects.

Instead The Greens chose to spend a huge public loan on a controversial observation tower with little public consultation.

That project is regarded by many as a waste of time, money and environmental resources.

This administration claims to have provided more housing units yet many are either small or are student housing suitable for short or medium-term accommodation.

It might have been better to ensure that a proportion of newly built student accommodation was made available for part-time students; students who have recently graduated but find it difficult to find housing; or young people in the city who have been accepted for training courses.

With the housing challenges we face it must be better for the council to encourage the owners of derelict land and buildings to provide affordable housing.
