YOUR report on June 29th of the impaled herring gull on St John’s Church in Hove highlights the help that our brilliant fire services give to wildlife rescue charities.

It is a pity that the facts of the story were reported incorrectly.

A member of the public contacted Roger’s Wildlife Rescue in Woodingdean about the plight of the stricken bird, and not the RSPCA in this case.

I contacted my senior wildlife volunteer, Shirley, who attended the scene while I called East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service who, with Shirley’s help, eventually removed the gull from its impaled position after two hours.

The bird was then left in the care of Roger’s Wildlife Rescue.

Our volunteers often don’t get the credit they deserve.

And this is one time that Shirley deserves everyone’s thanks for the effort she put in on this difficult rescue.
