JAMES Andrews (Letters, March 17) makes a fair complaint about the issues relating to the growth of the student population in Bevendean and elsewhere but is unfair in his charge that the council has done nothing about it.
Since taking over almost two years ago we have worked to build relations with the two universities and I have regular meetings and communications with the vice chancellors and senior staff to address the issues Mr Andrews describes.
Just this week the University of Sussex announced its new community ambassadors scheme to promote better community relations and better behaviour by students towards their neighbours.
Both universities are investing in new purpose-built accommodation, Sussex on campus and Brighton at Preston Barracks.
This is in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council which owns the land.
The council, of course, under the Labour administration, is building 500 new council homes and 1,000 truly affordable homes to help ease the pressure on housing in the city.
We can’t address the entire need and we should remember that the universities bring in millions to our local economy as well as the issues Mr Andrews talks about.
But it is not right to say we are doing nothing as a council to address them in partnership with our two universities.
Councillor Warren Morgan, Leader of Brighton and Hove City Council
