Your article headed "Cycle lane is waste of cash" (The Argus, May 21) raises a good point about the use of public money.

Good use of public money is one of our key priorities, which is why we have managed to deliver the lowest council tax rise since 1997.

Competent and transparent governance is now ensuring money is not wasted.

As part of that, we introduced a dedicated finance committee to bring decisions out in the open.

A value-for-money review will save more than £9 million in the next financial year.

However, it appears Councillor Paul Elgood is challenging his own party's policies for promoting sustainable transport.

On one hand, the Liberal Democrats are advocating more cycle lanes, less use of cars, more public transport and healthier living, while on the other hand, you have Coun Elgood.

I also wonder whether Coun Elgood is suffering from temporary memory loss, given that the cycle lanes were introduced under Labour, which was the previous administration.

I should also like to remind Coun Elgood that the money to build the cycle lanes came from central Government.

Brighton and Hove City Council is committed to providing sustainable forms of transport that encourage people to get fit and healthy, reduce congestion on our roads and promote a cleaner and greener environment.

I would encourage Coun Elgood to get on his bike and test out these cycling lanes. He may discover that they are indeed a good use of public funding.
