J Carnighan (Letters, August 15) seems to have misunderstood the point I was making about lifeguards. My criticism was about the removal of the high observation chairs that used to be situated at intervals along the promenade and not of the lifeguards who made heroic attempts to save the man who drowned near the Palace Pier (The Argus, August 11).

The lifeguard in the photo which illustrates J Carnighan’s letter appears to be standing, unlike the lifeguard who we approached to inform of the young lads playing in the dangerous, rough surf on a beach in West Hove, despite the red flags flying.

Had he been positioned with a high vantage point, he would have seen this for himself. Of course people should take responsibility for their own safety but there will always be those who tempt providence and if we are going to employ lifeguards they may as well have a good view along the beaches rather than sitting in deckchairs hidden behind windbreaks.
