CONGRATULATIONS to Councillor Gill Mitchell on being re-elected leader of the Labour and Co-operative group.

However, the local party faces enormous challenges if it hopes to form the next local administration.

Firstly, they will have to develop policies which appeal to the electorate in the city centre wards.

It is no coincidence that Coun Mitchell and two colleagues represent the East Brighton ward on Brighton and Hove City Council.

The local Labour party will have to demonstrate they have the political acumen to deal with issues such as the budget deficit, transport, environment and education.

As the tourism industry is so important to the city, local Labour politicians have to show they aspire to a vibrant welcoming and progressive city.

Coun Gill Mitchell is a hard-working and conscientious local councillor.

However, she will have to display leadership qualities if the local Labour and Co-operative party is to form the next local administration.
