Adam Trimingham’s angry piece about the Green Party expelling Councillor Christina Summers from the Green administration was more than justified (The Argus, September 19).

Coun Summers must now come off all the committees she is allocated to, leaving her to serve out her time in the current administration as an independent councillor on no committees at all.

It was startling to learn that this act means the Greens may be forced to relinquish casting votes on as many as four committees, including the all-powerful Policy and Resources Committee as a consequence. This leaves the administration badly compromised.

The number of seats (votes) councillors get on committees is a numbers game and, because of the expulsion, the Greens will lose committee seats.

Giving up voting power in exchange for this adventure was frivolous and calls into question their fitness to govern.

Why didn’t the Greens just demote, reshuffle and eventually de-select Christina Summers before the next local election in the time-honoured way?

A vote of no confidence at the next full council meeting must now be on the cards with the real possibility we will see the country’s first ever Green administration prematurely toppled – all for a “Dear Prime Minister” letter on a non-council fringe issue. What a mess.
