Siblings on the beat

SIBLINGS normally spend a lot of time fighting each other – but these two are keeping the peace instead.

New PCSOs Katie and Jo Salter are the third generation of siblings of their family to work together.

So say hello if you see them on the beat – harmony is a relative thing.

Keep our beaches clean

WE all love the beach in the summer – but we all have a responsibility to keep it clean.

TV presenter Kate Humble was on Brighton Beach yesterday to hammer home that message.

But despite the campaigns, mass clean-ups, initiatives and government backed schemes, the message does not appear to get through to some people.

Not only does leaving a mess have an impact on fellow beach lovers but it also impacts on the local wildlife.

We must make a stand against those who continue to litter, just like this newspaper did with our Big Beach Clean-Up earlier this year.

So this summer, after your trip to the beach, make sure you clear up your litter and leave the area in the state you found it.

Take care in the heat

TALKING about the weather is something this country loves to do.

Sussex has been experiencing a heatwave, with sunny skies battling it out with humid temperatures.

In the middle of this there have been some heavy thunderstorms, leading to some spectacular pictures of lightning strikes around the county.

And there is likely to be more to come with further storms and humid temperatures forecast for the weekend.

While thousands may head to the coast to enjoy the weather, it is important to remember the health warnings.

Elderly people and those with respiratory problems can be particularly affected by long periods of humidity and sunshine, and it is vital they stay cool.

This includes keeping in the shade at peak times and drinking plenty of water to keep hydrated.

It is still too early to say whether we are going to have long, hot summer, but it is hoped people across the county follow the health advice and take the necessary precautions so they can enjoy it.
