The storms of the last few days are a reminder of the immense power of Mother Nature.

Deafening thunder claps, huge forks of lightning and heavy downpours provided quite a show – for those of us who were not hiding under the bedsheets.

However, while storms are a fascination to many they also pose a risk.

In Uckfield a teenager received an electric shock when lightning hit a family home and there were reports of other injuries across the country.

With more electrical storms expected later this week the Met Office and other agencies have issued guidance to stay safe. Firstly, if possible the public is being advised to stay indoors.

The time between the sound of thunder and the lightning flash indicates how far away from the centre of a storm you are. If the gap is less than three seconds then you should be inside.

All non essential electrical items should be unplugged to prevent a power surge and the landline phone should not be used. The lines can conduct electricity.

If you do happen to be outside in a storm then stay away from rivers, lakes and the sea as well as poles, pylons and metal objects.

Definitely do not lie down.
