Shakedown Festival
THOUSANDS of fans headed to Stanmer Park in Brighton for the last music festival of the summer. Shakedown 2012 attracted fans of pop and dance music as Dizzee Rascal, Katy B and Professor Green among others performed. The festival doubled its attendance on last year, with organisers saying the event was at capacity. About 17,500 tickets were sold in advance for the one-day event, with more than 2,000 selling on the day. The capacity of the festival was 20,000 – double last year’s figure. The weather was as good as anyone could have hoped for, being dry and without a breeze. Temperature became a problem for some people later on as predictions of lows of 6 to 8 degrees came on. Crowd favourite Dizzee Rascal ended up trading hats with a fan during his set, which was the headline on the main stage. Before the gig Katy B showed she was a fan of the city when she Tweeted: “Just got to Shakedown festival! I do love a bit of Brighton!” Some people complained about being unable to see Miss Dynamite in the second tent, which had a capacity of 5,000. Reports suggested up to 1,000 people were left stranded outside unable to see as the sides of the tent were not open. The evening was marred by a stabbing following a dispute between two local men. A 21-year-old man was taken to hospital after suffering a severe stab wound to his back. His condition was last night described as serious but not life- threatening. The incident happened in the main arena of the festival. Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the assault, who should call 101 and quote serial 1646 of 06/10/12. There were also reports of phone thefts and people attempting to walk along the A27 after the festival, but Chief Inspector Paul Betts praised the work of his officers. He tweeted: “Shakedown control saying goodnight. Well done to all those officers working long shifts keeping people safe tonight. 15 hour ‘hero’ shift!”
