BRIGHTON and Hove is known far and wide for its various attractions.

There is Brighton Palace Pier, the Royal Pavilion and now the i360.

But once upon a time Brighton and Hove was also known for its beauty pageants.

They fitted perfectly with the city’s cheeky, somewhat naughty image. To be named Miss Brighton was a huge honour.

In recent years such events have fallen out of favour. Some view them as tacky, others misogynistic.

Today’s main image is from 1966 and shows three young ladies posing for the judges on the seafront.

The winner, pictured in the middle, is one Diane Phillips with the runners up Carol Bull, left, and Paula Young either side of her.

We would love to know what the trio are up to today?

Do they still live locally? If you know then get in touch.

Diane’s hair is just fantastic. Just how did she manage to get such height?

The photograph directly above is from the following year and shows Diane Phillips again.

She is chatting to a Michael Dryhurst. The caption states that the beauty queen is sitting on a 1939 A.F.C bus which was part of the Brighton Corporation’s first motorised fleet.

Winning was such a honour that the queen would be invited to various events throughout the year and wheeled out to meet all the dignitaries.

In the photo top right of the page Miss Phillips in pictured with the mayor of Hove alongside some of her fellow competitors.

Top marks for whoever can tell us the name of the mayor.
