Under the direction of Jason Pimblett, Brighton And Hove (actually) Gay Men’s Chorus presented a fine selection of their repertoire from the past three years to rapturous applause.
Hosting proceedings from a leather chair reminiscent of Charles Gray in The Rocky Horror Show, was the dapper Brighton institution David Raven, who lent his own individual charm and humour to the occasion.
The chorus displayed commitment and dedication, with some fine vocals and a varied choice of songs, from Sondheim and Gilbert and Sullivan, to Verdi and Wagner.
Opening with a rousing version of Tonight from West Side Story, they progressed to a moving rendition of You Raise Me Up, which brought a tear to the eye.
Selections from Miss Saigon and HMS Pinafore followed, the latter featuring the very amusing Gerry McCrudden, a born comedic performer.
David Raven, in addition to his amiable banter, also treated us to his strong vocals, with, amongst others, a sensitive performance of I Won’t Send Roses from Mack And Mabel, and Ivor Novello’s And Her Mother Came Too.
The chorus gave us many more well executed songs, such as Can’t Help Loving That Man, It’s A Boy’s Life and The Deadwood Stage, before the night culminated in a strong finale of numbers from Les Miserables.
To the delight of the audience, it was announced at the close of the concert that the boys are about to sign a record deal.
To echo the words of our Mayor, more please.
