Eagles push Wolves all the way

Eastbourne emerged with pride but no points after going down 50-42 at title-chasing Wolverhampton last night.

Eagles had two 5-1s and a 4-2 in the last four heats as they went agonisingly close to being the first away side to take a point from Monmore Green in 11 Elite League meetings this season.

They needed a 5-1 from heat 15 to snatch a bonus and, although impressive Davey Watt thrillingly beat home star Freddie Lingren, Cameron Woodward was some way back in third spot. It was only Lindgren’s third defeat in 53 home heats this term and two of them have been at the hands of Watt.

Things might have all been so different but Lewis Bridger scored just one point and failed to beat a home rider on what used to be his favourite away track.

Eagles team manager Trevor Geer said: “Lewis was on another planet. It’s unlike him, he has been good all year but they all have bad meetings at times.”

Watt and Simon Gustafsson had 5-1s in heats 12 and 14 to offer some hope of spoiling Wolves’ perfect home record.

However Eastbourne have now taken just one point from their last six meetings and will be glad of a two-week break, enforced by the World Team Cup, before their next fixture at Belle Vue on July 20.

Wolverhampton: Lindgren 14 (5), Karlsson 10+1 (4), Woffinden 8+1 (5), Skornicki 6+1 (4), Proctor 5+1 (4), Klindt 4 (4), Stichauer 2 (4).

Eagles: Watt 12+1 (5)^, Woodward 9 (5)^, Gustafsson 6+1 (5), Kling 5 (4), Dryml 4 (5), Bridger 1 (4), Norris r/r.
