More than 100 campaigners rallied in Brighton to call on Prime Minister Gordon Brown to adopt a tougher stance on climate change.

Friends of the Earth protesters were joined by MPs at Pavilion Gardens on Saturday.

They called for the Government's new Climate Change Bill to cover all sources of carbon dioxide emissions, including those generated by aviation and shipping.

Brenda Pollack, of Friends of the Earth, said: "There is a real groundswell of support in our region for a climate change law that is fit for purpose.

"But the fact that only 15 local MPs have signed the petition to include international aviation emissions does not reflect public concern. We must see more widespread support from MPs."

Brighton Kemptown MP Des Turner and Hove and Portslade MP Celia Barlow attended.

Mr Turner said: "Climate change is far and away the most important thing on the political agenda."Ms Barlow said: "We've had a really good turnout and it's very pleasing to see how many people care about climate change. I've had more than 700 letters from my constituents since Christmas on the subject."

Saturday is not even a 'working day', but then again that's not really a concept in your supporters' vocabulary anyway.

Maybe start about 2pm next year to give time for the lentil munchers and soap dodgers to recover from their Special Brew induced hangovers and get down there to support you.

And you are basing this on what? Not on Des Turner's membership of the Science & Technology Committee which has spent years stdying and promoting renewable energy technology like wave turbines, or his membership of the Environmental Audit Committee, or the fact that he is Vice Chair of the All-Party Renewable and Sustainable Energy Group in the Commons, and was a member of the Joint Committee on the Draft Climate Change Bill. Not on his strong record of backing campaigns by Friends of the Earth and others aimed at reducing carbon emissions and tackling climate change. If you want to check this out visit his website or just Google Des Turner and sustainable energy. Support him or not, but you can't say he doesn't know his stuff when it comes to this issue.

The negative comments left about this event should be dismissed as the angsty nonsense of the badly educated bigots expressing them. The weight of public opinion is now clearly behind the very sentiments of the organisers of this event and the presence of two of our local MP's shows that the threat of Climate Change is now an extremely important political issue. The issues raised by this event are part of a growing movement and in a short space of time this will become clear, even to these idiotic few, who will of course then move on to poke holes in another selfless minority. Well done to the organisers. Brighton is a trend setter and we should be proud.

Oh dear! I'm genuinely appalled at the level of this debate prompted by the Climate Change Bill event on Saturday. I would have hoped that comments could rise above the hackneyed and abusive "a 'working day'.. not really a concept in your supporters' vocabulary", the erroneous accusation of 'ignorance' on the part of responsible and environmentally active Des Turner MP .. or indeed a failure to spot some good old-fashioned British irony in Stuart Bray's comments which was directed quite rightly at most contributors hitherto. Speaking as one of those who had a great deal of fun (Thunderbirds uniforms? .. how irresponsibly lighthearted!) and satisfaction helping demonstrate for an improved Climate Change Bill I know we and our supporters (including an increasingly large majority of the UK population) are winning the debate, changing minds and actions and leading a positive reaction to what is a moral concern for all those on the planet. We are also asking that emissions from shipping, as well as aviation, be included in the Bill .. thank god most people man lifeboats in an emergency instead of rearranging the chairs on deck!

The sooner you start taking a positive action on this crucial issue, the better for all of our chances in an uncertain future.

Our dependency on oil is just not sustainable and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. Out of interest, most of the percentage of the 100 people attending on Saturday, including myself, are not only full-time working and council-tax paying citizens, but we are committed to a secure and long-lasting future for us all, so please don't patronise us with your undermining suggestions that it is only the 'great unwashed' who come out on a Saturday to make their voices heard. Soon your ignorant denial will be drowned out by a future that is defined by inventive, high-tech and long-lasting carbon-free ways of living, that will transform society - building collective resilience in the face of climate change and the end of oil.

Historically, many civilizations have been too short sighted to invent new ways of thinking and living, consequently causing themselves to be wiped out as they use up all available resources, expand into and stretch their environment to the absolute limits that it could support. As a species we need to adapt to survive, and right now this means getting real about climate change and responding to it appropriately. What is 'appropriate' is a strong Climate Law is actually scientifically effective in the face of the facts and without which we all really don't have a hope in hell. Without the inclusion of aviation and shipping in this Bill, the whole thing is a complete farce.

Okay so here's some research. The climate did warm by 0.5c during the nineties but since then it has plateaued. The UK accounts for less than 2% of the world's emissions. If the UK were wiped off the map expanding China would take up the slack in 15 months. If the emmissions from the UK as a whole is irrelevant then what is an individual's effort worth ? This issue is just being used by politicians a) to get their name in the paper b) to tax us more.

Reading some comments here it's really hard to tell these days whether it's simply the state of our education system, wilful ignorance or some attempt at 'humour' but it obviously needs saying again:

Global Warming is the cause.
Climate Change is the result.

When you have afternoon tea in the garden on Saturday and it snows the next day, that's a change in the weather.

When 90% of the hottest years have been in the last decade, that's a change in the climate.

Is that clear? Good.

I have a farm with a herd of 100 cows. Each cow f*rts about 2 times a minute, for about 10 secs, a time.So in one day it equats to 2,880,000 f*rts a day.So in one year a cow will f*rt 105,120,000 times. Now if you count all the cows in the world, and add up their wind, what on earths harm is done by a family going on holiday in a plane. If you want to save the planet, go out and buy some big corks and get to work. Or get a proper life.

I'm not badly educated at all.

Please show me conclusive proof that this shift in temperatures is solely attributable to 'man's lifestyle' and I will support you all 100%.

However - I have never seen any report proving this.

The temperature of the Earth has shifted many many times before - long before we started driving Tarquin and Chelsea to school in our very expensive 4 x 4. The servicing costs are a nightmare as well!!!

If you cannot show this to me then I respectfully ask that you do not refer to me as a bigot. You don't know me at all and I find it worrying that if someone obviously disagrees with you then you seem to take an aggressive stance.

Yet again Jacob you show a dismissive stance that serves no purpose.

You show a lack of common courtesy in terms of 'if you don't believe me then you are an idiot'.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and when someone voices a point to **** the cast iron evidence you claim you become very defensive - that does not augur well for the evidence you claim to have. It makes people doubtful.

I am not clinging to 'piffle' I am in fact a very well educated individual who is a free thinker.

A sign of intelligence is to collate all available information, evidence and intelligence and place together a theory that causes that person to put forward an assumption to a set of events and future issues.

As yet, nobody and I mean nobody, as provided complete evidence that this is all man made. It could well be a natural cycle in the Earth's climate. It may not.

As I have stated to you twice now - show me where is evidence is and I will gladly believe you.

No-one ever does.

The issue here is no longer whether Climate Change is man-made or not.
That debate is conclusively done and dusted.

If you are not familiar with what 1000's of scientists have come to a consensus upon then have a trawl through http://www.realclima

te.org
This website http://www.skeptical

science.com/argument

.php also seems to cover all the skeptical arguments outlined in this thread.

The fact remains that certain 'powers that be' continue to hold a vested interest in thwarting widespread political/environmen

tal changes and thereby maintaining their 'business as usual'.

In creating an impression that there is a sense of uncertainty surrounding this issue, they hope people and politicians alike, will hesitate and falter - delaying or watering down the measures - and hence securing the buoyancy of their profits.

Their tried and tested tactics largely involve the introduction of 'uncertainty' into every Climate Change debate, however scientifically unfounded. All that matters is to present a counter voice and to attack the views that threaten their interest. Their constant nit-picking over detail and flat-denials, simply intend to muddy the waters and prevent the true voice of scientific fact from ringing clear.

There is a certain conscious belligerence going on in many responses here. I would posit that these time-wasting debaters need to take responsibility for the effects of their flame-fanning.

Every day we lose more chances. 'Debate' on this issue really does not hold the intelligent higher ground anymore.
We need urgent and effective action from central government, as the carbon bottom line won't wait around for all these doubters to be convinced.
