Buckley double wins it for Albion

Will Buckley scored two first-half goals to help Albion win 2-1 at Huddersfield today.

The Seagulls were in charge until Simon Church netted from close range in the 90th minute.

But this time there was no drama in injury-time as they saw out the win.

Victory came despite the inconvenience of losing first-choice goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak to a finger injury sustained in the warm-up.

Peter Brezovan, initially promoted to the bench for the trip north, was called in for his first start of the season.

Albion were well worth their 2-0 half-time lead and might even have been further ahead.

Buckley put them ahead in only the fifth minute from a well-worked corner routine which ended with Bruno’s clever pass sending the winger into the box.

His low shot somehow found the gap between keeper Alex Smithies and his near post although it took Albion fans at the far end of the stadium a couple of seconds to realise the ball had gone in.

Craig Mackail-Smith had already whipped a shot just wide from Andrea Orlandi’s free-kick.

Ashley Barnes shot wide and headed over from good openings and Simon Church nodded over when unmarked at the other end.

Barnes seemed to get a feint header to Orlandi’s angled free-kick and the ball nestled inside the far post – but the flag was up for offside.

Albion, though, doubled their lead in the 40th minute with a stunning counter attack.

Liam Bridcutt caught out Keith Southern in midfield and Mackail-Smith’s pass got Buckley racing towards goal.

He still had a man to beat but he did so in style, cutting on to his left foot and then back on to his right before shooting past Smithies.

Huddersfield were a different proposition after the break – and Albion invited pressure by sitting deep.

Lee Novak forced a low cross just wide on the hour and big Alan Lee was sent on to ruffle feathers.

But Buckley almost completed his hat-trick in fabulous style on the 74th minute when he cut inside a couple of challengers and curled a left-foot shot which seemed to be heading inside the far post until Smithies dived full length to tip it behind for a corner.

Church pulled one back for Huddersfield on 90 minutes by tapping in the rebound when Brezovan spilled Danny Ward’s shot.

That ensured a tense period of four added minutes for the Seagulls.

But they survived a couple of hectic scrambles and almost added a third when sub Will Hoskins sent Buckley away, only for a combination of Smithies and Joel Lynch to deny him.

Unfortunately we had to abandon our running report from Huddersfield today. This was due to problems with internet connection, despite our repeated attempts to resolve matters.

Great result, 4 points on the bounce away from home at Wolves and Huddersfield is a great feat.

This was a pleasing Albion performance, especially in the first half. Huddersfield are a good side. The result should give confidence, and it was good to see Painter and Hoskins doing so well. Brezhovan needs a little more self belief. The only down side was conceding - but at least we didn't capitulate as we did last week.

UTA!!!

Sorry Brightonup i disagree, parasites and germs will forever be a bane of us,it would be the norm to excuse such pathetic creatures for the illegible halfwit inbreeds that they can only aspire to be. But fortunately for the simple fly squatter (your fly squatter for today has been Will Buckley) we can eradicate those with both personal hygiene problems and tiny dicks. As much as I tire of reading the rubbish you post I have to say that I am one of a number of people that are still huge Murray fans and was sincerely gutted to see him move on. He did a fantastic job for us and one that it is missed by our current squad. How I would have loved to see these 2 players you've mentioned playing alongside one another this season. Not going to happen though so onwards and upwards. UTA

Great result and performance. I thought Painter and Hoskins were tremendous today - especially considering their lack of game time.

Hoskins really brought something extra and Buckley was his usual self!!!. Now let's take it forward at home.

Good result beating a decent team. Need a quick recovery for both of our fallen seagulls.

Must be honest when i saw the team today with no Kuszczak i thought we could be in big trouble. But what a g8t result. What i find hard to take is i really think we are just that one player away from the prem league.Barnes should have put those two chances away again today. We are just a top striker away from the prem league.Bloom must see this also.

SMF20,great result today, with best respect ,do you think Gus would have bought CMS if we had kept GM?..It sounds a great combination, but as we have seen ,Gus plays ONE striker so it becomes academic,it was never going to happen!..UTA

Tug, I genuinely believe that he would play them both. I think he plays one up top at the moment as we don't have a Gm type player. I guess that your question will be answered for sure should we ever secure the forward GP has desired for so long. Quite agree with today's result being a great one though :)

I am really tiring of all this Glen Murray drivel. Look up "gaffe" in the dictionary. It means "mistake". It's NOT a mistake if you have no choice. Murray dind't want to sign a new contract, so he moved on a Bosman - Gus had no choice; end of!

Murray would've stayed and signed a new contract if they'd paid him what he considered fair, but they didn't and Palace did offered him more what he was worth. How much do you thin Mackail-Smith is being paid? And how much do you think Murray is worth?
The TRUTH is Gusset didn't think Murray could cut it in the championship.

Buckley scores two, Brighton win and yet people still want to talk about Murray, crazy.

Considering our last few results and the fact that we have two very possible home game wins coming up, are we on a bit of a roll here.
Bolton and Bristol City will probabaly learn form others and play very deep and hope to hit on the break, have we got past the problem of breaking down a packed defense.
Confidence and performances stemming from that confidence has been evident for the most part in recent weeks, will this new found confidence enable us to get past a ten man defensive wall.

Buckley is hot right now and he might be the key needed to unlock both Bolton and City, my hope is that come monday morning training the players don't get over confident, that they realise that we have not shown that we can find our way to goal through ten determined defenders.

Anyone that watched the football league show last night can see Murray is in a different league to what we have now.Just be honest it was a very big mistake to let him go.Palace were waiting in the wings to make their move long before he left. But Gus did nothing. Its not time to talk yet i think he said, just like last week with Bridge.
