Vicente's on the way back
9:30am Wednesday 12th December 2012 in Sport By Andy Naylor
Vicente is making his way back to fitness
Vicente has been earmarked for a New Year comeback for Albion.
And boss Gus Poyet admits it will feel like a January signing if the Spanish playmaker is available again.
A thigh tendon injury has sidelined Vicente since a brief appearance as a substitute in Albion’s first home game in the Championship against Cardiff back in August.
The return of the former Valencia playmaker would provide a boost to the Seagulls’ promotion challenge akin to a fresh face arriving once the transfer window re-opens on January 1.
Poyet told The Argus: “That is the idea. It doesn’t need to be in January, it could be in December! I won’t have a problem if he can play on the 29th (home to Watford) or the 22nd (away to Blackburn). If that was the case it would be great.”
Vicente is currently on an individual rehab programme, specifically designed by Albion’s medical team to step up his recovery.
He has yet to resume training with the rest of the squad and Poyet is loathed to put a precise timescale on his return to the main group after several false starts.
“He has been training last week but with us I don’t know,” Poyet said. “He has been training more than he was a month ago.
“He has been working on his fitness in different ways, a different programme so that he can get better and maybe join the group.
“He has been doing a bit of everything, strength work, controlled training, running, the new gravity treadmill and plenty of pool exercises which could be really hard but not the same as playing.
“It is a different way of bringing him back to the first team quickly, where he can train and forget about everything. I don’t want to put a date on it, because that’s not fair.”

It's a shame that he's still out while Spanish Andy is out, as I see them competing for the same position.

Of course I hope I am wrong and we have V back and a murrey esk striker on board.

Yes, he is a very good player to watch, a crowd attraction and pleaser. But at the end of the day, he is not exactly helping the club to better things.

Thigh tendon injuries are notoriously difficult to deal with (big muscle etc)as opposed to breaks which are sometimes easier to mend
Predicting an exact time of return after re-hab is anyones guess
We just have to keep patient till we know one way or the other and I for one hope and believe he will be back with a vengeance

No doubt about his talent and is by far the best in that league but he is taking the pi55 out of the club.

Catch 22 situation here. Vicente would more than likely have left by now but for his continuing injuries. This is good for us, because he is still in the squad. On the other hand, he is something of a financial liability to the club. He still draws wages, but his rare appearances make him of negligible value overall. Yes, he is a very good player to watch, a crowd attraction and pleaser. But at the end of the day, he is not exactly helping the club to better things.
I hope we get to pay loads more to the guy, as that will mean he's playing!

Well it would be nice for him to play again just so another club can transfer him and have him on their wage bill.

There is no resale value to Brighton, he is not on contract after this season, so we must get all we can from him whilst he is here.
With the amount of matches he has missed so far, and the few he will miss as we run up to january, I would have torn up his contract but that's me and I don't manage the club.
Brighton are a better team with a fit Vicente than we are without him so I hope he can repay the patience both the fans and club have shown to him.
When a fit Vicente takes to the park he can raise the game of those around him, it will be interesting to see who benefits most, CMS, Hoskins and maybe Dobbie, I can see them two working well together.

The good news is that he might be fit for the Newcastle game. Having seen his performance against Chelsea one would be delighted to see him back.
Still unsure whether we will get more than a few games from him - his body seems crocked.

Sadly most people's opinions of Vicente's health seem to have been generated by the facile comments in the Argus rather than what the club have said all along.
Most of the news on Vicente's recovery from injury have originated from the Club both last season and this. The club clearly realises that his fitness is problematical and are doing their best to handle it.
Given his injury problems at the end of his time with Valencia and the relatively few appearances he has made for the Albion Vicente clearly has an ongoing problem in trying to maintain fitness.
This is a tragedy for him and most unfortunate for BHA. One must however applaud the club's efforts in trying to deal with the situation and get him back playing again. If the club succeeds it could benefit hugely.
In the meantime I hope the club can get Orlandi back playing again asap.

I think Vicente might be closer to a come back than some of us think, I say this simply based on what Gus is saying, 'it doesn't need to be january it could be in december.'
As we all know the swimming pool is the best place to exercise because every part of your body gets a work out, you can't protect any area. Vicente is reported to be working in the pool and has been doing strength work and running, these must be good signs as to his full recovery.

I'm not seriously suggesting that we wouldn't benefit from a fit V but merely pointing out that one swallow doesn't make a summer, and indeed one Vicente doesn't make a winning team! ;)

The ironic thing is I'm pretty sure we picked up less points with V in the side last season than we did without him. One day I'll be boring enough to sit down and work it out......one day. As I said in an earlier post, it's how Vicente links up with the other players and what his abilities means to other's performances.
If Vicente can bring us the creative element that we seem to have been lacking we might see more goals.

To have a fully fit Vicente would be a massive boon to the team, but, and i hate myself for this, because im a cynic where this guy is concerned,i cant help but think if he returns,it would mainly be to put himself in the shop window for Elche or another club back in Spain. If he finished the season injured ,his options would be limited to say the least, personally i think he will finish the season with us strongly, which of course would make everyone happy. UTA

Reading between the lines it seems Gus has no real idea when or if Vicente will appear again in our colours, when you consider how little he played in the couple of seasons before he signed for us we cannot be very hopeful.
Gus says that it doesn't have to be january, maybe late december, that thinking has to come from his understanding of the fitness work Vicente is doing and the results of that work.
