Gus Poyet watches the action against Forest
ALBION boss Gus Poyet wants the club to spend big in January on the goalscorer he believes could clinch a place in the top six in the Championship.
Poyet is more convinced than ever it could make all the difference to the Seagulls after they failed again to make the most of a glut of chances in Saturday’s 0-0 home draw against Nottingham Forest.
He told The Argus: “It’s getting closer to where it is going to be a big decision for myself, of course with the backing of the club. I would say I am now closer to bringing someone, or a few.
“It should be natural now. We should be bringing someone after what has happened this year, someone who is going to be there in the box, is going to have one or two (chances) and put the ball in the net, whether it’s a midfielder, defender or, as it normally is, a striker.
“Sometimes you need the kind of character who stands up and says ‘I’m going to score this one. Put it there, it’s mine, you have got no chance to stop me’. Normally if you have that attitude, they don’t stop you or you are going to have more chances to score than not.
“That costs a lot and at the moment we are still a little bit behind but I am doing my homework with the chairman.”
Albion are still within a win of the play-offs, despite their sixth draw in ten games in which they have only lost once but have dropped half of the 30 points available.
Poyet said: “We are there, so if they (other teams) give us the chance we are going to try to take it. If they keep doing what they are doing and we change something and we win games we have got a magnificent chance to be in the top six, no doubt.”

It was interesting to see Hoskins continually getting into better positions than CMA and despite his poor finishing I hope he starts tomorrow.
Saturday was the most frustrated I've felt at the Amex - the players let Gus down. We should have been 2-0 by half-time. How many times have we found that this season?? Although we are still in play-off range, the top four are pulling away. We need to actually start winning these "winnable" games asap!

Well.. this was obvious from the start of the season....but we failed to get anybody. I thought Dobbie was going to be great... I know he has not played much...but when he has, he looks disinterested. Has not worked out for the lad... get shot of him in Jan.

And you seem to be in a minority with regards to David and Crofts. All accounts said they played well, but faded a bit after the break.
I can't wait to see who he will get - but I'll bet my mortgage it won't be Austin. Not only is he too expensive, but it's a mistake to buy someone who has just had a good half season, as it is almost impossible to carry that throughout an entire year.

I agree about a striker though - no point in half measures. We have some very decent forwards already so there's no point in buying unless it's someone better or significantly different in style. Someone like Kenwynne Jones would do for me.

I hope Hoskins gets another start tomorrow. He got into some great scoring positions on Saturday. Looked far more dangerous than CMS and is streets ahead of Barnes in movement, skill and technique. I think he'd be great alongside a big centre forward.
I note Lukaku is not getting a game at West Brom either. I touted him on this site at the start of the season as a loan target. Maybe he could be an option. We'd be nailed on top 6 contenders with any of the above three. Aah if only.

Prefer them both to stay and would like, as we've said all season, a striker to compliment CMS up front, a strong attacking midfielder, and a big stopper of a centre back.
No doubt there will be many names bounded about for future players but we need some new faces to push us forward to the top.

I note that several premiership clubs have their own websites on which, for a subscription, live games can be viewed.
With all the facilities available at the Amex I wondered, particularly if we are to be promoted, if it would be possible, and viable to offer a similar service.
We would not need the expert advice of pundits etc just live pictures and sound, this could keep costs to a minimum. Whilst the initial capital outlay could be sizeable, I feel that with enough subscriptions it could become viable and encourage and promote the name of our team around the world.
I would happily pay £10 to view a match,I'm sure there are many others who would do the same. Question for VAGAS for example, would you be prepared to pay $15 to watch a live Albion game??

We are half way thru the season, loads of time for injuries to occur, a buy one sell one policy is dangerous.
Gus talks about, 'someone or a few,' if CMS goes then two must to come in and possibly three. One hold up striker, God knows we need one. One new striker to finish off chances created and one to replace CMS if he goes, and I am not so sure he will right now.
If CMS stays then we can get by with two new faces up front.
There is still the matter of a new center back, hopefuly one that can head a ball from set pieces.
I would expect one or more loan deals and a single purchase up front and maybe a loan deal at the back. If Bridcutt goes I think we can deal with that from our current squad. A determined effort for promotion via the play-offs is going to need more than just a single striker.

I was told that under the TV contract that the FA has the club is not allowed to screen live coverage.
When we get the chance to watch live games on our PCs it is because the game is being shown on TV anyway, so we get a feed that we would not get if the match were not on TV.

And you're right about the exclusivity clause. Allowing clubs to stream their own content would be catastrophic for the central deal because of the exclusivity both at home and across the world. On the Macheda rumors, is he the big target man we need? From what I remember he is a slight and skillfull player?
I would be happier to see a Kenwynne Jones type but also think we need a big lad in midfield.
I don't have the answer to our problems but sure Gus knows what he wants, maybe a foreign player we've not heard of can be got far cheaper than anyone currently in Prem / Champ? Michu at the start of the year for example??

Zamora, would have been on the January hit list, and I am sure we would have got him, but he is out for another 2 months to come back from an operation, not helpful. Unless a stupid amount is being offered for any of our top players they have to stay here until our season is over, to sell anyone at this moment would be a step backwards.

If we'd had Billy Sharp playing for us on Saturday we'd have won, he's not the answer to our problems but he's a proper goalscorer.
John Guidetti from Man City would be a great buy/loan, he scored 20 goals in 23 games for Feyenoord last season and made his debut for Sweden this year.

Our current strike force is NOT good enough....I do like CMS and he does give us something a bit different. But in all honesty, I'm not sure he is even a chanmpionship stiker yet.. let alone premiership. If we get alot of money for him, I think we should take it.

It's no good to sign someone like Bobby to 'complete our strike forces' ..we don't have a strike force...
Besides... as much as i like Bobby.. he is NOT the type of player we need.

If the players that we have got are the finished article then fair enough.
When I watch MOTD, there are always easy goals being missed so it doesn't just happen to us.
Every game is a rehearsal and the training ground can only do so much.
At least CMS is getting near misses and we are creating opportunities unlike last year.

We can't afford to wait until the end of January and a last minute deal. January can't be thrown away. Crucial GP can get a fox in the box signed up in early Jan not late Jan. Go through January drawing matches and dropping home points and this season is well and truly over. If we get the right man in Jnauary we still have an outside chance of making the top 6 if we go on an electric run of form.

If we can get a couple of new strikers, and yes one as a hold up guy, then we might see the best of CMS, I am sure that we haven't as of yet, and I would say the same of Dobbie.
If CMS were to go and a new guy replaced him what happens if the new guy gets injured, we are back where we started but no CMS. I don't think that we need to replce CMS, I think we need to add to him. Could Barnes go, yes but he would need replacing.
Hoskins is showing some good signs but has yet to find the net. Buckley has dried up on the goal front.
Additional strikers are needed, not replacements, that's my view of it.

We came to the conclusion that CMS is at his best when he has less time to think about his finishing - examples being Burnley and Charlton, but falls down when he has the ball at his feet and time to dwell on it (on Saturday he did a mazy dribble towards the end of the first half, beat a couple of players and then put a tame shot wide of the post).
If CMS is considered 'not up to the job' of scoring in the Championship, I just wonder why we think that a Premiership club like Norwich would want him?
Do they see something that we do not? Would they be able to get him to score against world class defences? If so, what does that say about our coaching and tactics?
Since Glen Murray is scoring goals wholesale for our rivals, would it be de ja vue all over again?
We wondered if he might do well in the Prem as an out and out finisher by way of latching onto chances provided for him by players more creative than those we have at Albion. Who knows? He may, but then again, he may continue to miss more than he scores as he does now. If he goes, I'd wish him well and be pleased if he does a good job elsewhere. Personally, I just don't think it's worked out with us as either CMS or BHA would have hoped, and I'd be happy to sell him and recycle the money on another striker.

I am slightly perturbed by the persistent talk of deals with Norwich and have begun to wonder whether Grant Holt is now in the frame... He was unhappy at Carrow Rd in the summer and then signed another 3 yr deal... His goal scoring has dried up this season (4 from 17, half his ration last season) and I would guess he is still not such a happy bunny. It's true he has certain of the required attributes but needs to play off other players - much as it is perceived CMS would do... So there's another answer looking for a suitable question...!
PS: I'm not advocating Holt as a possible striker, just looking at the Norwich connection... Any thoughts...?

I have a different view on the Holt suggestion. I think CMS is the perfect ally for Holt. The big striker that CMS has lacked here. I can see CMS running on to the Holt headers and scoring freely.I have no doubt that CMS is on his way and knowing that you, like myself, is a longstanding advocate of Hoskins, I am expecting Hoskins to step up to the plate in a big way. Let's hope we are vindicated on that opinion!

So far I have not seen anyone in the current squad to seriously challenge CMS for his spot.
CMS, Hoskins, Barnes and Dobbie, none of them are scoring, hence our problem.

I think it would be worth acquiring someone from Europe where I gather BHA feel better value can be found and as back up perhaps a striker from the lower leagues or out of the picture at a Premiership club.
I hope Poyet in searching for a striker with Bloom doesn't lose sight of the need for another defender. There is a distinct possibility that with Bruno out that Calde might be unavailable as well for the Millwall game. If that happens who will play RB - Painter ? I am not even sure if Painter is fit again yet.
Finally with reference to the Norwich connection and the suggestion that Bennett might be offered as part of any deal involving CMS, I would welcome his return. I think we have really missed his 'delivery skills' since his departure.

Hoskins is showing some good signs but has yet to find the net. Buckley has dried up on the goal front.
Additional strikers are needed, not replacements, that's my view of it.

We are half way thru the season, 10 goals for our top striker and some of them from penalties, but that's fine. CMS should have half as many again considering the amount of chances he has had.
The other three have a total of 11 between them, again some from penalties, nowhere near good enough considering the amount of chances they have collectively had.
None of the three can challenge CMS for his place, the numbers tell you that.
I am not winding anyone up, I am simply stating that we need two strikers and not one.

Can you imagine the problem we would have if we spent 5 million, or more, to get promoted and it didn't happen. We would be stuck with one or more high pay cheques to write and still be in the championship division.
Agents will ask for higher wages in january than they might during the summer, they know what their product can mean to the buyer.

Vicente will be back. Orlandi is coming on leaps and bounds. Hammond and Dicker are not exactly a waste of space either.
If we can get a couple of strikers who can finish some of the masses of chances we are creating, the pressure will be lifted from our midfield in terms of defense.
Bridcutt the play maker, Vicente or David the play makers.
Bridcutt the defender, Crofts or Hammond. We have the players to have options on the bench if the strikers are doing their part.
For me Orlandi would replace Bridcutt as a regular starter should he (Bridcutt) go.

100 percent sure that no swap deal will be done. Just because it complicates a deal. We can't afford to rely on added conditions so if we are serious there will be no strings attached.
I don't think we have let any member of the main squad leave in January. We had offers on Bennet and Noone but they stayed until the season was over.
I see no change this year unless a club offers over the odds and is a forward move for the player League wise and financially.

Kwaidam, I'd have to agree with a lot you are saying. I'd certainly not want to see either Bridcutt or Buckley move on. If we are to have genuine aspirations of reaching the promised land then these 2 are certainly keepers. Cms is a bit different though... Would he and Austin be a good partnership? Perhaps. My gut instinct though would be that Austin would come in to replace Cms and thus a second target/link striker would come in too. I believe the fee we would get for Cms would cover Austin just about and think the other target type guy would come in on loan. I also think that Gus would still like a driving central midfielder. The wings are covered by Buckley, Lua Lua and I think Orlandi and the holding role is obviously Bridcutts. I think we just need that Trotter type midfielder to give us some muscle to complete the midfield. Defence is relatively simple in that we probably just need the one centre half and as others have mentioned, one that is good in the air. All in all we are so nearly there. I've never heard GP be so fourth coming regarding a window and what he is going to do and so have every reason to think that within the next month or so all will be in order for a real good push in the second half of the season. So far Gus has tried tweaking at the front to see if he can spot a formula that might work, it's no good Gus, we have too many players without the goalscorers instinct, only CMS comes close but not with enough consistency at Championship level, defenders mostly have him in their pockets.
A must-have with at least one of the new strikers is height, we are woefully poor at scoring from corners, free kicks and high crosses from either wing due to the lack of tall players in the box who can attack the ball in the air, also we have no plan B or C when tactics need changing because of this heigth issue too.
Buckley must stay and only let Bridcutt go if we can get Elliott Bennett back in. Vincente should be back from his sabbatical in Spain sometime in January which coupled with two good forwards should put us in a great position for a play-off slot at the very least.
Good luck Gus in your quest to complete what you have started, many inquisitive and judgemental eyes will be on your next transfer dealings and the impact they make on the team over the remainder of this season.

hi read your comment on the echo mark .think gus should of grabbed billy sharp on loan .what you want to do his bid for jay rodriguez be cheeky he got 30 goals at champioship level .not sure he is ready for the premier yet .but he would fire you up into the top 3 .trouble with the champioship its a squad thing .you get so many 3 games in 7 days .unless your in europe you get 7 days preperation most weeks.its just the premiership is much harder .all of the teams have more quality .but you still have lots of time .anything can happen .id like to wish all brighton fans a merry christamas and good luck for the rest of the season
