Albion put contract talks on hold
9:00am Tuesday 18th December 2012 in Sport By Andy Naylor
Captain Gordon Greer is one of 13 players out of contract in the summer
Albion have barred new contract talks as they bid for promotion from the Championship.
Thirteen players, including first team regulars like captain Gordon Greer, Adam El-Abd and Ashley Barnes, are out-of-contract next summer. They are effectively playing for their futures, with half of the season left and the Seagulls just outside the play-offs.
Boss Gus Poyet revealed to The Argus: “There are no contract talks. Everything has got a time and there are moments during the season when, for what ever reason, the clubs needs to move or sometimes the player or the agent tries to move and then we’ll see but right now no, no talks.
“We have got plenty of time. It will depend on many things. I don’t want this to sound like they are playing for their contracts in a bad way but it’s the truth.
“Depending on how you do and where we finish you will have a better chance to get a new contract. My thinking always when I was a player was ‘make sure you perform’.
“If you perform you will get a contract where you are playing or somewhere else for sure, if you don’t and if you start being too worried about the contract situation then it’s going to be more difficult.”
Will Hoskins, Lewis Dunk, David, Gary Dicker and second choice goalkeeper Peter Brezovan are others looking for contracts.
The list also includes injured duo Vicente and Marcos Painter, on-loan Romain Vincelot and Roland Bergkamp and the out-of-favour Matt Sparrow.
Two-page preview of Albion's game against Millwall tonight plus much more in The Argus today

Do you run the risk of losing players who are out of contract? As a manager wouldn't you already know who you wanted when you step up?
and which ones you wanted if you were in the Premier League.
What you don't know is which league you'll be playing in.

Good shout from Alan G Skinner, northstand4, Seaguller and kwaidam and the few others who mentioned him.
We shall see though, but it's a target confirmed so will be interesting to see what happens and if we are targeting anyone else. UTA

In defence, Kuszczak, Bruno and Calderon. Possibly also Ankergren.
In midfield, Bridcutt, Orlandi, JFC, Crofts and surprisingly Harley.
On the wings Buckley and LuaLua.
Strikers CMS, Dobbie and Agdestein.
In addition to the Argus's list of players in their report above one mustn't forget that both Hammond and especially Bridge in all probability will need replacing.
So Poyet is faced potentially with a major recruitment task this summer. Given that (to quote Poyet himself) it takes time for players to adapt to the BHA playing style, it would make sense to bring in 3, 4 or even 5 new players now assuming the budget will allow that. Any departures in January would make such a policy more practical.
Of those out of contract I imagine Poyet will want to hold on to at least two if not all 3 of Dunk, Greer and El-Arb. In addition I would expect Barnes and possibly Dicker to remain.as well if we are still in the Championship.
So for next season Poyet will need to sign another GK, one CB two FBs, at least one but most probably two midfielders, another winger and two possibly 3 strikers (depending on how Hoskins does over the next month.) That's alot of new faces to be signed and intergrated into the club by next August.
Changing subject does anyone know if Calde is going to be fit for this evening's game. With Bruno and Painter already out we look very short of Full backs.
Interesting (but unlikely) rumours re Woods and Austin. At the moment I would have thought we would be well down the potential clubs for Austin but then I thought the same about CMS 18 months ago.

I think Austin is unlikely.... I feel that we should persue our interest in Olivier Occéan, plus get a well established championship striker.

I have to think that any new strikers that arrive will come from the prem or abroad. I would much rather see us do a couple of expensive loan deals rather than spend millions.
If the plan works and we do manage to get promoted we could buy those that we borrowed.
To have a real chance of bringing quality players to the club we need to get into the top six by January 1st, especialy if we want to buy rather than borrow.

If you were to look at the 20 players with the most playing time this season and then short list those thta you think could make the step up, your list would be a short one.
Of those that you think could step up, wait and see if any prem clubs come for them in january, that will tell you if you are right or wrong.
Of those that we have on contract my list would only have three names on it. I guess I could add three more but two of them would be third choice back up players and one as a cover player.
We really need to know where we will be before we start dishing out new contracts.

Gus spoke highly of him in his PC but steered away from direct the question of being interested because he didn't want to compromise tonights game.
He is young, with a lot of experience, strong, currently doing well, has great potential, knows us well, if he joined it would be for the right reasons and no fly by night like Abdul Razak last year and would be a good sensible signing.
As others have suggested his name in recent posts, I am now warming to it.

It would be a no risk deal for us, just wages for 5 months.
Milwall have to negotiate as much as any other club who may be interested because he is not theirs.

I assume you mean where will the class players come from if we get promoted.
We would buy from where all the prem teams buy from, each other and Europe mostly.
Looking at Poyet's record he will start from the back again, do his best to ensure survival and then move on.
I am more worried about where do we get quality players from to get us there.
Quality players will come to a prem team, even a new one, but getting them to come to the Championship is a much bigger ask. .

I don't think he will cost anything because he is on loan from West Brom to Milwall until Jan. He could choose to come on loan to us until the end of the season with an option to buy then. However he may be at the end of his contract then and come to us on a free if it works out well here. It would be a no risk deal for us, just wages for 5 months. Milwall have to negotiate as much as any other club who may be interested because he is not theirs.
We are looking to bring players in as soon as possible so if he is one we couldn't wait. I suppose the question is, would WBA agree a further loan deal knowing that his contract is expiring, would they not prefer a sale come january.

Unless Burnley are in financial trouble why would they sell Austin in mid season, given the goals he is scoring for them it doesn't make sense.

This loan stint of 2 months is far from committing himself to Milwall.
I know he signed for West Brom as a trainee in 2008 and has gone out on loan to Barnsley, Brighton, Birmingham and Milwall in this time.
I presume his initial contract as a trainee would have been for 5 years which will release him in July 2013.
I hope he gets a good reception at the Amex tonight.
It's obvious that we have shown an interest, but it puts the player in a very awkward position tonight if he is considering the move.

I think Lopez will be in because Gus will want to see more of him and test him out. Although he had a slow start against Forrest he came into it. Needs match time like Hoskins.

I hope Hosko starts tonight since he got into the right positions to score which is at least half of what is needed if we are going to win matches. I agree with your comment Hovite that Hosko demonstrated that he can potentially exploit the space CMS creates. Hopefully the same could apply in reverse ie as Hoskins becomes more tightly marked so space will be made for CMS.
I imagine Lopez will start as he seemed to come on to a game on Saturday.
