Buckley misses Ipswich trip
9:50am Monday 31st December 2012 in Sport By Andy Naylor
Will Buckley has a hamstring problem
ALBION will be without Will Buckley again for tomorrow’s trip to Ipswich.
And the winger’s chances of knocking Newcastle out of the FA Cup for the second season running are also in the balance.
Buckley missed Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat by his former club Watford with a recurrence of hamstring trouble.
He will definitely remain sidelined for the visit to Portman Road and manager Gus Poyet will decide later in the week whether to unleash him in Saturday’s third round tie against Newcastle at The Amex.
Buckley’s late goal dumped the Toon out of the competition at The Amex in the fourth round last year.
Poyet said of his latest setback: “The injury is not bad. He did it with the last sprint of the last game we played (against Millwall).
“If everything goes allright he should be fit for Newcastle. I am not sure if I will risk him for that game though.”
Fullback Inigo Calderon, sidelined recently by a knee injury, is rated 50-50 to be back in the squad for the trip to Portman Road.
Ipswich are eight points and three places clear of the relegation zone after Saturday’s 2-0 victory at Wolves made it a triumphant return to Molineux for former Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy.
It was their fifth victory in seven games and Poyet warned: “Everything is going Ipswich’s way. They are winning games before that they couldn’t, so it’s going to be difficult, especially if we don’t improve at the back.”
Meanwhile, Poyet's assistant Mauricio Taricco revealed this morning that Romain Vincelot is "probably coming back" from his loan spell at Gillingham.

The reason Noone seems to be prospering is because he is playing in a midfield role behind the strikers and has licence to switch sides and of course has good support either side of him. Brighton have some good players but the system we play as we all know does not suit some,CMS in particular.
Also Cardiff and most of the teams at the top who have hit decent runs have done so with settled teams,Brighton never seem to have the same team out each week and this is partly because Gus doesn't seem to know what is his best line up. We need to persevere with a settled side(barring injuries) for at least 4 matches, the only way players get form is to play regularly, currently its impossible for the likes of Dobbie or Hoskins to be expectd to make an impact coming on 20 mins from the end.
I also noticed in the last three matches the away fans have been more voiciferous than us and it is noticeable that we need that attacking impetus and flair to get the crowd going, with the way we are playing with possession mainly in our own half, rather than quick attacks this isn't going to happen. I would hate to see attendances dwindle as a result esepcially with the 30750 capacity available for the last 6 home matches, lets hope our season is still alive then.

18 yearolds that are that good are signed as kids, they are developed over a few years.
I agree Brighton do need to find a good crop of kids, we do need to nurture for the future but isn't that what the new training facility is going to be part of.
Clubs with much bigger setups than we have, Man U, Arsenal and Chelsea are all looking for that 18 yearold, if they even exist they are very few and far between and they will probably get them before we do.
I suppose we could sign a few youngsters from Spurs or Liverpool but why would these clubs let a talented 18 yearold go.
Nope, if we want quality youngsters we are going to have to develope them ourselves. Our need is to find some talented 15 yearolds and then work out how to keep them once they come good.

It is interesting that for the first 4/5 matches GP hardly changed the team and the they played well - unluckily losing at Hull and recording some good wins. We also had the best goal ave highest number of shots on goal in the division at that time. Then we made four deadline day signings and since then Gus hasn't really settled on his best 11.
Over the past few days there have been numerous references to Noone and why we let him go.Noone was a good player with us but his final ball, like most of the squad now, was lacking and his shooting was generally awful.

It is a very big game for us at Ipswich. Gus has been a great manager for us, and I have just loved the way he came in and changed the way we play and to modernise us. At the time, we so badly needed to get out of the club the linger of 'gritty' football which was adopted by McGoo, Wendy, Adams & Spade.
However, I can help but feel Gus has run out of ideas. The tactics are simply not working - the 1 striker idea is now passed ridiculous and we have far too many flairy players who can not head or tackle.
Us as BHA can't just stand by Gus 'beacuse he got us out of the S**t days' .. Yes he has dobe a great job, a brilliant job...but BHA is more important and it may be time for a fresh view...
If we lose to Ipswich, get spanked by Newcastle and play badly in Jan... then it maybe bye bye Gus.... (and Tanno)

The Watford match further highlighted our complete inability to adapt during the 90 minutes. Saying that, we have almost stood still since promotion from League One, while the rest of the Championship has moved on considerably. This is so painfully obvious to the observers, the true fans.
Sticking to a game plan is fine if you have the squad who will understand the plan and any developments from it. The problem is, we have some quality being used out of position and out of their concept of understanding, which leads to a predictability about our style and very little to be gained from an encounter.
Watford realised very quickly, that we were never going to be a threat towards their goal, and this is something that really concerns the most diehard supporter. Without any hope of scoring, we can wave goodbye to any hopes for this season, and this will not really help with the selling of next season's ticket sales.
As I see it now, some big changes have to take place come the end of January, although in reality, they need to happen a lot sooner than this, otherwise team confidence will evaporate rapidly and a relegation scrap will ensue.
Having a lone striker may well be the modern trend, but we are not able to make this formation count for anything. So with this in mind, why not use what we have to play to their strengths? It isn't rocket science; if you cannot alter players thinking, then alter your methods to extract the greatest ability levels and create a team that can attack and score goals.

That is Gus's comment on Sky. I conclude that the imminent striker is from abroad. Anyone agree?

My fear stems from the fact that we might try to, 'buy,' promotion and if it doesn't work we will be saddled with some very higly paid players that failed to deliver.
With three of our players being possible transfer targets, CMS, Buckley and Bridcutt, we could be looking at some 10 to 12 million pounds coming in. Should we buy replacements that are of equal quality or better, would 12 million be enough to do so. We also need the new striker so 12 million in could easily become 15, or more millions out.
If our stars do go and at a price that is high, then my hope is that we do loan deals for the replacements. If promotion doesn't come at least we will have good money in the bank for a rebuild next summer.
Birmingham are in so much financial trouble that they are going to sell some gems so as to avoid being wound up, we must never get into that level of debt.
If we paid out 100k a week in loan player wages that would cost us about 2 million, Bridge reportedly costs us 10k a week, think what 100k could do, 5 new quality players, possibly 6.

(I won't just say 'Good post' because it would still be a good post whether or not I agreed with it.)
Watford played with two strikers and it works.
Chelsea play with one, Torres, but he can do anything, like head a ball, dribble and shoot and it works ad gets support from midfield.
Moral? Play to your strengths, not what is fashionable or considered de rigeur temporarily.

Why not malouda on loan- Gus use your magic?

Difficult to see what the team will be like by end of January.
Rather us keep cms Liam Buckley and add to the squad than become a selling club.
I admit becchio or Darren bent feels right for us at this time.
I have a feeling with Vicente nearing playing and some good additions to the team we will go on a very good run into the play offs . We need a sharpshooter like a Peter ward type player why not play vicente in that role or dare I say billy sharp. After all other teams near the top in this league look like losing players in this transfer period like Ince zaha Murray so could be to our benefit.

He feels that in the past when he has tried to buy players the price being asked has not been reasonable so now it's payback time.
I would love to know what Gus thinks is a high price for Buckley, CMS or Bridcutt.
If Bridcutt is the most valuable of the three could he be thinking 5 million, could it be more?
United look like making a move for Zaha, will his sale price set the figure for Buckley, maybe half of what ever Zaha goes for. If Zaha goes for 8 million is 4 million a high price for Buckley, is Buckley close to Zaha in the talent department.
Norwich are probably looking at Murray and Graham, would they pay upwards of 4 million for CMS when they have a chance of these two.
I am not sure that CMS will go, the price tag Gus places on him, and the availability of other strikers might kill any sale dead in it's tracks.

Please wake up some of you. There is young talent out there. How about young Charlie Gilmour 13,and a former Hove Park schoolboy.Local scout Dave Allen spotted him and his now at Arsenal.Scouts from all over the country have watched freeloaders like Dunk,Barker,Dickerso

There are lots of talented kids out there, the idea that there is not is nonsense, the club need to get the academy up and running, pick up the best 11 year olds and coach them, that will take 5_ 6 years, to start to bring players through, even the development squad is made up of players released by other clubs, give it ten years and if the academy is doing its job, we should have ten players in or around the first team.
Look at saints, player after player coming through... The next lad to be sold is 17 left back playing in first team in the premiership.. All I can say is the day hinsh got sacked was the day the club moved forward.

Uruguayan with a Italian passport, just 6'1 tall, strong fiery forward who can hold the ball up, and is a finisher with both feet. I reckon he will sign by tomo.

"Everybody wants the best British players and that makes you pay too much.
"But when you can go overseas and get a better player for half the money the complaint is there are too many foreigners."
That is Gus's comment on Sky. I conclude that the imminent striker is from abroad. Anyone agree?
Cryptic perhaps

Also other clubs give there youth players a go, why not use them, see what happens.
But i do agree - british players cost too much like everything else.
Will be interesting to see what TB does if we lose tommorow, lets hope we dont.

Come on, we are in only our second season of Championship football and some seem to think that we have the right to march through the division into The Premiership! Now that is a scary place...against some of the biggest clubs and best players in the world. Do we want to get hammered every week? I would rather build a club slowly and be ready for it when we go up. Let's get the new training grounds going first .
NB Nobody noticed that Vincelot is coming home.. He never let us down in defence and with our record of conceding lately, I would put him in the team.
