Bruno out as Albion make two changes
2:21pm Tuesday 1st January 2013 in Sport By Brian Owen
Dean Hammond returns to the starting XI today
Albion have brought back Dean Hammond and Ashley Barnes to face Ipswich today.
But there is no place for Andrew Crofts, who drops to the bench, or Bruno, who is absent from the 18.
David Lopez is likely to move to right-back in the absence of Bruno, who has suffered from Achilles and rib injuries in recent weeks.
Albion are also missing Will Buckley (hamstring) and Inigo Calderon (knee) along with longer term absentees Marcos Painter and Vicente, who scored so memorably here last season.
Ipswich are looking for an eighth win in 13 matches since the arrival of current boss Mick McCarthy.
They are forced into a change in midfield where Nigel Reo-Coker replaces former Crawley loanee Andy Drury, who is unwell.
Success today would take the Tractor Boys, who were bottom of the table earlier this season, to within a point of the Seagulls.
Ipswich: Henderson; Orr, Chambers, Smith, Cresswell; Edwards, Reo-Coker, N’Daw, Martin; Murphy, Campbell. Subs: Loach, Hewitt, Mings, Hyam, Emmanuel-Thomas, Chopra, Scotland.
Albion: Kuszczak; David, Greer, El-Abd, Bridge; Bridcutt, Hammond, Orlandi; Barnes, Mackail-Smith, LuaLua. Subs: Brezovan, Dunk, Dicker, Crofts, March, Dobbie, Hoskins.
Ref: Kevin Friend (Leicestershire).

Not sure about David remaining in the 11 though, I'm guessing that Bruno is injured again.. Anyone know?
As for Barnes returning... It's certainly not shocked me. I do wonder what Hoskins has to do to get a game though. I'm starting to feel for the guy, clearly Gus doesn't think he is up to much, shame.

Really please Hammond is in for Crofts, he may not have set the world alight on his return but he has been the better of the two.

How GP can prefer AB to WH is totally beyond me... It beggars belief and, as far as I am concerned, calls into question his own judgement. On present form I would even pick WH over CMS. I really don't understand but will be pleased to be proved wrong and therefore remain with fingers crossed (but not, I hasten to add, holding my breath)!!!

As far as forwards and how to start scoring goals, GP is clueless. Come on Mr Bloom lets get O'driscoll in and Poyet and Barnes out. Or the stadium will be about 10,000 seats to big com August.

See we have a sub called March--who is he??? Wish Gus was more open with players left out---aka Bruno---only raises what may be unfounded suspicions??

I have to assume that Bruno is either ill or injured. With Calde and Painter still injured we are short handed in defence still with the young DS player March being included on the bench. In view of Bruno's slightly below par performance against Watford by his own standards, I am now wondering if Poyet 'risked' playing Bruno because of the shortage of any other defenders and given that in Buckley's absence he wanted to play David wide on the right side of midfield.
Having young March in the squad does provide cover for LuaLua on the bench which I think is needed since LuaLua has a tendency to 'fade' after about 70 minutes.
I will be interested to see who exactly we do sign as a striker (or strikers).
Finally I still think we need a powerhouse midfielder - interesting that Crofts has been relegated to the bench. I also continue to believe that we need another defender, ideally someone with pace having seen how exposed both El-Arb and Greer were by the Watford strikers.
I have just seen that the Albion are 2-0 up today so fingers crossed for the 70 minutes or so.

I'm pleased it sounds like Barnes is being played more as a second striker today - that's where he scored all his goals when we won Div 1. Hopefully GP has decided to be more adventurous. Definitely sounds it today.

There are two camps here, the irrational get Gus out camp, and the rational stick with Gus and be patient camp.
Which one are you?

Oh, and I do enjoy the conspiracy theorists who claim that a bid has come in on any player who may be dropped or injured!

Barnes comes back in and we go 3-0 up away from home. I'm not saying the two are causally linked, but no doubt playing Barnes will still be the wrong selection in the eyes of many myopic 'fans'.

Your comment re Hammond seems justified since he has scored today. Not sure I agree with your doubts re David although I suspect it will depend on where Poyet plays him as to how effective he might be for the Albion.

Brighton record with Barnes is much better with him in the team than out of the team!
Barnes was our top scorer last season. What short memories some of you have!
With Bruno, Calderon, Painter, Buckley and Vicente injured the squad looks stretched. Clearly Sparrow has no future at the club as youngster Solly March was preferred on the subs bench.

Good result today and perhaps just as important as the result, a lift for Barnes and Hammond, they had to leave the park happy today, CMS too.
A big lift in confidence should come from today's result for all the players and the fans. Gus will sleep well tonight, his team selection got the job done. A goal each for a striker, midfield player and a defender, just what Gus has been calling for.
Buckley injured bad news, would an injury put off a potential buyer, maybe good news.

Comments, such as the one I have quoted, might be valid at the end of the match but when stated before a ball has even been kicked, well that just opens the door to foolishness.
Now say sorry and we can forget all about it.
