Buckley signs new contract
9:00am Friday 4th January 2013 in Sport By Andy Naylor
Will Buckley has committed his future to Albion
Albion ace Will Buckley has signed a new four-and-half-year contract.
The influential winger’s deal was due to expire at the end of next season but the Seagulls have now tied him down until June 2017.
Buckley has been in scintillating form since signing from Watford for £1 million two summers ago, sparking fears he could attract interest from Premier League clubs during the January transfer window.
Boss Gus Poyet told The Argus: “This is a clear indication that we are doing everything possible to keep our best players and Buckley has been one of them. He had 18 months left on his contract and we want him to stay with us, because we believe in our project and the future.
“When we signed him he was a very good prospect with many qualities. We have worked with him and he has improved a lot in the last 18 months. He is going to get better and better so I am delighted with the agreement and that he is happy at the club. I think it sends a nice message to everybody.”
Buckley, 24, scored eight goals in 35 outings last season, including a late double to turn defeat into victory in Albion’s historic first match at The Amex against Doncaster Rovers.
He has already hit five goals in 20 appearances this season and has been frightening Championship defences with his pace and directness down the right flank.
In November, after he teased and tormented Leeds, Poyet claimed Buckley is better than Crystal Palace’s £10 million rated England newcomer Wilfried Zaha and insisted he was not for sale at any price.
Buckley said: “I’ve played my best football at Brighton so it was a no-brainer to place my future here, playing in front of massive crowds now week in, week out.
“That’s why I came to the club, to stay here for the long-term, so it was quite an easy decision.
“I am just glad it’s all sorted now. It got sorted out quite quickly as well. Once Brighton offered me the contract it was only a matter of weeks before we reached agreement.
“It takes a bit of focus off contracts and stuff and now I can just concentrate on playing. Speculation can be unsettling, although it doesn’t really faze me too much.”

Great to have some very positive news early in the window for a change. I think that most of us had become a little immune to the blanks being drawn in the recent past, followed by last minute fever pitch attempts to buy this player or that player. This January will be the turning point in our season. Onwards and upwards. UTA!!

A lot will depend on if we show real progression this season (i.e. play offa minimum) and who comes in for Bukka in the summer. If we finish 10th or lower and a good Prem side come in for him he may well go. Poyet will not stand in his way remember!!
Nice that he's clearly happy though.
As for the Ulloa guy, of we've signed him that's fantastic new, check his wiki page, he scores goals!!!

Don't get too carried away and start taking promotion again. We arent the only club strengthening our squad. Our rivals are doing the same. So in theory the status quo shouldn't change. It will only change if one team makes much better signings than others.

For some time now we have been creating good scoring chances and failed to convert them into goals.
We have also, in more recent times, been dealing with a shortage of a quality defender when injuries occur.
If these two lads can deal with these two issues, and help others to up their game, it shouldn't matter what our competitors do in the transfer market.
The performances of, 'our,' players will decide our fate. We are not signing players to counter those signed by other clubs, the guys we bring in are surely intended to give us what we have been lacking.

I think Zaha will go, probably to United but not before the end of this season.
If money was the driving factor for the lad he would go now. I would guess 50k a week would be his wages, over 20 or so weeks that's a cool million pounds he is turning down.
To have Buckley on a new contract is good business. If we get promoted this year he will go nowhere. If we don't, and if a big club comes for him then yes, he might well go, but we would get good money for him. To lose a gem for good money is not a bad thing if you have the summer window to replace him.
For now I am going to believe what Buckley has said, he sees a future with Brighton and wants to stay, that will do for me right now.

Buckley is without doubt one of our tops boys and I couldn't be happier for him, the club and most importantly being selfish, us...
Well done the management team, this will certainly calm a few people's nerves.
Just a quick one for all of the real fans though. Where do you think it leaves the guys that are out of contract at the seasons end? I wonder what they think of this given GPS comments only a couple of weeks ago about not negotiating contracts. I just wonder is these guys will be part of the clear out Gus talked of.
Anyway, it's all good :)

Freeloaders wrote:Oh yeah it is very possible that Zaha has a deal lined up with a top club, a deal that only kicks in at the end of the season.
I think you have got most of that spot on Vagas. But i think like we all know a deal it done between the clubs in cases like this.It has between Arsenal & Southhampton before with players. Its know odds to big clubs like that if they let a young player stay till the end of the season, and maybe get a promotion under his belt.
The kid is in a nice position. If Palace make the prem he has what he wants, if they don't he still gets what he wants.
If Buckley has a good finish to the season and, if he has a good first half of next season, this time next year we could be talking about Buckley having a deal lined up.
I think the jury in the prem division might stll be out on Buckley, just a little more proof needed.

He is up there with the best of GP's signings and even though he may not see out anywhere near all of his contract the amount the club gets for him will be reflected in the residue of his contract.
