Gus Poyet admits he was delighted to see Will Hoskins get off the mark for the season – and calm Albion’s nerves.

Hoskins netted for the first time at The Amex with a late second as the Seagulls beat Newcastle 2-0 in the FA Cup.

His strike rounded off a fine display by the hosts, who went ahead through Andrea Orlandi in the 33rd minute.

Boss Poyet said: “I had a chat with Will last week and told him before the Ipswich game ‘You will have a chance’.

“He had a great chance to score in the last seconds (at Portman Road).

“Today I told him he would score a goal.

“I know how difficult it is for strikers when they come on for 20 minutes or half an hour or even playing from the start and not scoring. He was desperate.

“He settled the game for us because there were nerves in the stands and among the players as well.”

Poyet praised his side’s display as they saw off a makeshift Newcastle line-up.

He added: “I’m honest enough to say we were lucky with the missing players from Newcastle.

“We needed to take advantage and I think we did that.”
