Poyet considers plan B
9:30am Wednesday 9th January 2013 in Sport By Andy Naylor
Leonardo Ulloa, centre, is wanted by Granada as well as Albion
Albion are plotting a short-term solution to their search for a target man if they cannot land Leonardo Ulloa.
The Seagulls will look towards a loan option if their hopes of securing Ulloa on a long-term deal are dashed.
La Liga toilers Granada have entered the race for the services of Almeria’s 26-year-old Argentinian striker.
According to one report from Almeria, Ulloa would prefer to remain in Spain, although Granada also need him to get a Spanish passport as they have no vacancy in their squad for a non-EU passport holder.
Albion boss Gus Poyet told The Argus: “It is something that we cannot control. If he gets the passport, then he wants to stay there (in Spain) we cannot do anything about it.
“We have got other options but a different type of player, not that kind of striker. To buy there are not many and not many that we can afford.
“The other options are loans, short-term options. We were looking to try to get one (Ulloa) for the next three or four years.
“It’s the same with other positions we are looking at. If we cannot get one for long-term then you go for a loan. We are just trying to make sure that we get the right players.”

Back to the post, a loan option may be the way to go if we cannot secure the long term target man (Ulloa etc), not sure who the options are now, but like Jonathan above i'd like to see Hoskins and CMS get a run of 3-4 games together and see if they can gel especially at home where we should ditch the one up top philosophy as it clearly does not work when teams come and park the bus and hit us on the break.

..................! Would not read too much into any of it, until, an official announcerment is made. Alloa opportunity does not particularly excite me anyway! I would have thought that the Albion would expect more than 2 mill compensation if Gus goes, however, it is all nonsense anyway written by journalists filling their column quota. Believe nothing until it is done, talk is cheap!

Massive gamble to get this player in. Playing at second rate team in the segunda not exactly prolific this season... literally unheard of before this widow. He might be a target man but this is not Spanish football and he may find it tough to adjust. I thought GP wanted impact similar to Roberts at Reading last year. I know everyone is looking for the next Michu but is it not better to gamble on a lower league player of this style that we can afford. I hope I am wrong but can anyone see my point?

Sorry DfB,while i have faith in our scouting network, they still couldn`t stop Vicente from sitting on his behind ,do you really want to risk that again. If we get a striker in,whether its on a contract or loan, then we will be able to move forward for a top six place. If we wait for Ulloa to get a passport, and he chooses Spain over us,it will be too late to get in an alternative, and that will almost certainly prove to be the end of our challenge for this year. Personally i am not happy with someone we know nothing about holding our future!.
Even if we did get him,it would take too long for him to adjust, for him to make a difference. Imho we need to stay close to home and find our target man before January 31st,all too often do we end up looking at the last turkey in the shop window. UTA

The Arsenal game is not one we have to win and the FA Cup shouldn't be taken seriously this season because there is too much at stake in the league. Still want to beat them, but we will more than likely get smashed in this one.

I don't believe that the Club has either the budget or ability within the present wage structure to purchase anyone of the quality that some contributors on here expect. Prolific Premiership strikers are simply way too expensive. (Even ex Prem, such as Drogba) Therefore there will be an element of risk in any potential signing because it will need to be someone not yet proven in the Championship. Think it's a good plan B, if we do end up promoted this or next year would whoever signed now be good enough at that level? Sides like Watford are proving the right loan signings can be beneficial in the short term but is another question in itself.

A tried and tested striker at our level seems to be what many are calling for.
This call would instantly exclude any player from the lower divisions in england and all players currently in the second tiers of the european countries.
To take such a stand would mean that we only buy from our championship rivals, the prem division or the top tiers clubs in europe or beyond.
That approach kinda cuts down our options of who to buy, don't you think?
Why would one of competitors agree to sell us their proven striker?
How can we afford a proven striker from the prem?
I would prefer that we borrow players form the prem, but even that will cost money. I liken that idea to renting a house rather than trying to buy it, you spend a whole lot of money and own nothing at the end of it.
I would prefer that we borrow now rather than spend money we haven't got, and Bloom wouldn't do that anyway. Spend maybe 2 million on loan deals, we have that money, and write it off as part of the costs involved in a run for the top.
If we do that and it works great, if it doesn't, well it's the rent or buy the house situation.

Seems it is OK to sign a player from a second div Spanish club before giving our own players a chance. At least JF knows what British football is all about. I don't get to games but from what I have read on here JF is a very good forward.

Striker issue am still with Vegas ,loan option best.
Hoskins not saviour ,COULD ,I said be next wardy not would, but will if given a few games ,which he will be our real surprise( not the right term) and may take heat off striker situation especially if v comes back which I have a suspicion he will. Not worth getting anyone if no better than vokes.
Remember than we are not awash with cash another season in this league whilst not really what we want there are worse positions to be in.
Talksport topic today? Ticket prices. Let's hope if we get arsenal ,we either win or lose ,£60 + for replay ticket not palatable . Come to that if we get them at ours can't see tickets being less than Newcastle game !!!

Gus and his team of scouts must be working within the restraints placed upon them buy the size of the budget given. To suggest he should go after players who, by all reports and judging by what Gus has said, are beyond the budget is pointless.
Something I don't understand is why plan, 'A,' would appear to have been signing Ulloa, no other purchases just him. Due to the problems in getting the guy in we are now reported to be going straight to plan, 'B.'
I find it hard to accept that Ulloa was the only player that suited Gus's game plan and also was priced within the budget requirements. If that is the case, and I am not saying it is, then Brighton need to seriously look at the finances.
Either Gus is looking for the, 'perfect,' player to meet our needs, and I doubt such a person exists, or perhaps our budget is too restrictive.
Plan 'A,' buy Ulloa, plan 'B,' borrow a player, not exactly a sutuation to raise one's pulse rate.

2. Poyet to Blackburn won't happen even if they weren't in the mess they are in.
3. Dunk to anywhere won't happen until his off field issues are sorted out.

1. Ulloa won't happen, just agent agitation me thinks and the passport thing won't be sorted until the summer under the rules. 2. Poyet to Blackburn won't happen even if they weren't in the mess they are in. 3. Dunk to anywhere won't happen until his off field issues are sorted out.
If the money is right we will sell him, IMHO. This year his role seems to be that of a cover defender and I think we can cover his role.
The lad wants to play, all players do, so I am sure he would move if given the chance.

I think I'm right to say Hull are still receiving 'parachute payments' this season and therefore have a bigger budget to work with than ourselves? It's obviously differcult for us to compete with them and many other teams in the division who have these payments/loaded owners! I think GP is doing the best he can with the resourses at his deposal and as other have previously said most of his signings have worked well. I am also hoping Hoskins is given game time in coming matches and do think he'll prove his worth. I think if we can beat Derby on Saturday and get a point or d up at Brum the lads can (with one or two additions) really push on and keep in contention for a playoff spot! In Gus we trust, UTA!

Right forget ulloa then for now, don't believe in blackburn rubbish , gus only move likely to be a top 5 club here or abroad!

Quick fix ain't there, Everything Gus has said makes sense to me.
He has only be outwitted on a one-off match by Sven at Leicester,.
Hoskins who i had given up on is now llooking good.
Promising but it might be tricky vs Swansea,

Perhaps ignorance is indeed bliss. I find myself disappointed reading this story. It looked like a done deal only a few days ago and I was looking forward to seeing this guy play. It now looks increasingly unlikely that he will be coming our way though.
To the loan system it is. Lets hope GP has a few names in mind that will arrive soon.

Interesting overnight news... According to The Independent, Blackburn have been told the Albion would require at least £2M compensation for Gus... Too much for the Rovers but chicken feed to some of the bigger clubs who may now be reviewing their options... and there is growing interest growing in the land of the Tractor Boy in Lewis Dunk who is, according to blogs up there, considered a giveaway at just £1M - I am inclined to agree with them. It should be added that Bristol City also showed interest and were politely told where to go... Fingers crossed that neither of these stories has any legs...
