Albion move nearer to Ulloa deal

Leonardo Ulloa Leonardo Ulloa

Albion have moved another step closer to signing Almeria striker Leonardo Ulloa.

The Argentinian is expected to secure the Spanish passport he needs to play in England next week.

Reports in Spain claiming Ulloa got the passport today have been denied by Albion boss Gus Poyet.

He told The Argus: "The passport itself he is not getting today, it's the citizenship. The passport could, in normal conditions, be next week."

Ulloa, 26, has been linked with other clubs but Poyet is confident Albion are in the driving seat to complete a deal once the passport issue is resolved.

He said: "I think we are the ones showing the most interest."

Meanwhile, Vicente has been included in a 20-strong squad for Derby's visit tomorrow.

The Spanish playmaker has been sidelined since August by thigh trouble.

Poyet said: "There could be a chance (against Derby). We have 20 players tomorrow and he is in the squad."

Latvian signing Vitalijs Maksimenko made a goal-line clearance on his debut in a 3-2 win for Albion's development squad against Millwall at the Lions' Bromley training ground today.

Albion's goals were scored by Anton Rodgers (penalty), Toby Agdestein and George Barker, who fired an 87th minute winner.

Why is everyone banging on about Ulloa being the 'one' !
He's a Spanish second division player....has no track record,or proven himself at a higher level.
Im sure our scouts have seen something in him...but its a whole new ball game , and a massive step up in standard for him. If we are expecting a new Michu, i pray we arnt disappointed. This guy has to turn up and hit the ground running...scoring goals ! Its a huge responsibility on his shoulders. Hope he realises his honeymoon period will be about three matches !!

so the goals he scored in La Liga don't count as proving himself then? Top scorer in the Segunda last season as well.

Imagine if he'd managed to score against Real Madrid - oh, wait ....

Wenners I think the reason so many are showing their optimism about Ulloa is because they trust Guss to get the right player.

You are right about, he is a playing in the spanish second division but is that level so far behind our level.
To say that he has not proven himself at a higher level might be true, but we were never going to get a striker from, a 'higher level,' we don't have that kind of money.

On different threads some are saying thta we should consider signing from the lower division in england, to me that means, 'signing a unproven at this level player.'

Why would it be right to sign from Div 1 in england but not this lad who actually does have a goal scoring record. A quality brazilian has taken his plce at Almeria and that is the reason why we, and others, can go for him.
Had it not been for the arrival of the brazilian player Ulloa probably would not have been available to anyone other than his present club.

That is incorrect, to move to the UK and get the correct work permit he needs to secure his Spanish Citizenship and then a Spanish Passport. He can remain in Spain as long as he likes as their rules on immigration are different to ours.

Vegas, i believe he's Argentinian not Brazilian.
Anyway, have to agree that noone should judge Spanish Div 2 without watching it. It's probably very good, it'll certainly be technically better than ours.

For all that, i've a bad feeling about this one. Just got doubts that he'll be happy and settle, like Vicente. Hope i'm proven wrong but if the lad would rather stay in Spain, then will he adapt and fit in over here if it's not what he really wants?

It constitutes a big risk in any case.

Well I could be wrong but yes Ulloa is from Argentina but the guy keeping him out of the Almeria team, as I recall reading, is from Brazil.

I am not so sure that Vicente didn't, 'settle,' surely his absense has been all about his long term injury.

As an expat I know how hard it is to settle in a new country but Ulloa seems to have managed that in Spain so I would expect him to be able to settle in England. The number of spaniards we have in the squad will make it easier for him.

So think about Michu at Swansea, who everyone is now bragging about as the player bargain of the season for the Swans, picked up for slightly less than 2 Mill and now rated as one of the Premier Leagues best, and valued at 8 Mill plus ?
Sometimes you've just got to invest in a spark and hope it catches fire !

Michu is rated at £30m by Laudrup. He was available for £0 at the end of 2010/11 and Gerry Armstrong actually tipped Spurs off about his quality and availability but they were not interested.

This is a promising development.

Any player recruited from a foreign league represents a bit of a risk but no doubt Ulloa will have been watched several times and the goal statistics are excellent.

Apparently the other Club that were mentioned as being interested in hime was Granada.
They already have their quota of foreign players, and so couldn't sign an Argentinian.
If he has Spanish nationality that would make it possible for them to sing him.

Will be great if it goes ahead, we should be looking at spanish division 2 and bundesliga 2 because there are some great players in those divisions. Most top players in Spain have played a considerable amount of games in the lower leagues of Spain. Furthermore Granada are interested in him and they are a good Spanish team and are interested in him so he must be half decent. Good news about Maksimenko making his debut, looking forward to seeing him integrated over the course of the next few months. Hopefully see Vicente too, a win no doubt if he appears.

Wouldn't you just love to be a fly on the wall in the halls of power at the Amex.

Day eleven of the window and very little movement, movement that we know of that is. A couple of fringe players have moved on and one young defender in for the developement squad.
All our gems are intact but so far no inward gems to boost the squad.

If you think about it we are barely any better off today than we were on the first day of the window.

IMHO the biggest move we have seen regarding the team is the level of morale, it must have shot up over the last couple of weeks.

A good win at Ipswich, the excelent win over Newcastle, Buckley signs a new deal and Vicente on the way back, all these plusses must be good for the players.
It would seem that we have turned a corner without bringing in any new drivers.

I would not be surprised if the Ulloa deal is the only one we are looking to complete as far as players in is concerned. If we get him that could be it for us, the window would be closed as soon as he signs on the dotted line.

It is not all black and white, players are not already necessarily at their maximum level. Look at Andrew Crofts, released by league 2 Gillingham (well they may have offered him a deal but weren't that bothered to keep him) and two years later signed by top of championship Norwich. Then of course played in the Prem. We have to trust Poyet et all have seen the right qualities in him to suit our game, and the right personal attributes too.

Sadly it seems Crofty has reverted back to league two standard!!

Ulloa is Argentinian but the player who has replaced him, called Charles, is Brazilian.
By the way I think Ulloa scored a goal against Real Madrid in a pre-season friendly in the summer.
Still hope we are pursuing other options in case the Ulloa situation doesn't pan out. VegasSeagull's thoughts about recruiting 2 strikers would cover our bases but I appreciate the budget might not make that feasible (loan option for the second maybe ?).
Also wondering if we are going to stengthen the squad elsewhere - a midfield powerhouse perhaps ?
If (?) Vicente were to play regulary such a player would be needed. I remember Poyet last season saying he wanted a powerful midfielder to play alongside Vicente.
11 days of the Window gone 20 days remain.
Comments anyone ?

So easy to say yet so hard to do.

Given the respect that most opposing managers have for Brighton and our recent rise from obscurity, I would guess that any player we are looking at they are too.
When it comes to playing quality football Brighton are right up there with the best of our division, if not the best. The type of player we need is also wanted by any of the top 12 in our division.

Competition to sign quality players is high and we are just one of the clubs looking.

If it turns out that after 18 months of looking we finally get the guy we want, that could prove to be so much better than all the signings our competitors have made. The player we sign will be compared to those we could have signed, those that other clubs did sign, only time will tell if Poyet's patience will be rewarded.

fansince57 says...

Patience guys! I remember somebody posting on here that they love their paperwork in Spain & these things take time. If we're a step closer that's positive news. And if/when we get him, let's show our support, not doubt him because he's been playing in the Spanish 2nd division.

Re Vicente, if I remember correctly (the old memory is not what is was!) against Derby last year he played a blinder - remember him moving upfield with a trail of Derby players in his wake unable to dispossess him. A repeat tomorrow would suit me fine!

Some of you clearly have never seen the spanish second league. To call it a level behind us is a massive insult to the quality of the players that are in that league! Barca B are in that league and theyd smash most teams in our league! English football is at a level so far behind spanish in general look at michu for swansea i bet if wed signed him in the summer people would have written him off as a la liga player "england is better" rubbish. Ulloa scores goals in a good league and also scored in la liga for a team that got relegated.
