Albion miss out on Dutch starlet
3:50pm Friday 18th January 2013 in Sport Exclusive By Andy Naylor
Albion have failed in a bold attempt to beat Premier League clubs to the signing of highly rated young Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk.
The Seagulls made an undisclosed offer to top flight Dutch club Groningen for van Dijk in the last 24 hours but their bid for the 21-year-old has been rejected.
Richard van Elsacker, Groningen's press officer, revealed to The Argus: "We can confirm there was a bid, which was made between yesterday and today, but we are not confirming the amount of the bid.
"We have rejected the bid and our intention is for Virgil to play here for the rest of the season. He is one of our key players and we don't want to lose him during the winter period."
Everton, Newcastle and Sunderland have all been linked with van Dijk, a Dutch under 21 international.
Van Elsacker refused to say whether Groningen have received any other bids for the player.

Doctor told the Southampton chairman he needed to lose some dead weight in January. So he went for the Adkins diet.
Glad we've got a proper Chairman and not a muppet like Stains

Newcastle, Everton and Sunderland can all afford his wages and they are all reportedly in the hunt.

Another thing we now know for sure is that the, spend big,' agenda is not going to stop at two million, four to six million might be nearer the mark.
I think it's also pretty clear that Gus plans to start Vicente as often as he can, go for the game in the first half and then get him off, job share role for Vicente, IMHO.

One thing we now know for sure is that Gus is looking for a new CB in this window, that is one question that has now been answered.
