ALBION boss Gus Poyet has owned up to getting his team and tactics wrong after his side snatched a point from the jaws of defeat at Blackburn.

A penalty from David six minutes into injury time, his third in seven games, rescued a 1-1 draw for the Seagulls at Ewood Park last night which has lifted them up a place to seventh, four points outside the Championship play-offs.

Poyet gave injury-plagued Vicente his first league start of the season as a deep-lying centre forward but the move backfired and the Spaniard was taken off early in the second half. Poyet told The Argus: “We need Vicente to play. In the last two games he was on the bench and we were waiting to see how the game went. We couldn’t play him against Derby and he had only eight minutes at Birmingham, so I wanted just to start him and see how long he could play. Now he is fit we need to use him.

“We used him in that position pre-season and it worked a lot, coming off the front and getting the ball and making us play, but we were not strong enough to go and attack and really show we wanted to win the game, so we were not ourselves, maybe because of (Will) Buckley and (Craig) Mackail-Smith being on the bench.

“I pick the team. I picked a different team and it didn’t work. The players are responsible because they are on the pitch and they cannot hide but I thought the game would go one way and it didn't."

David's third success from the spot, and his fourth goal in total after scoring in open play at Birmingham on Saturday, confirms that Albion have at last found a reliable penalty taker.

Poyet said: "That's the good news, that is what the chairman (Tony Bloom) is going to be happy about, because we were terrible taking penalties for the last year and a half.

"When it's David Lopez I am quite confident. Before that I used to hide from watching, so it's nice to have a penalty taker."

Albion are still waiting for international clearance for new signing Leonardo Ulloa, who was again a frustrated onlooker. Poyet lamented: “I don’t know what is the problem with the FA. I have never seen something like this.”
