Poyet proud in Cup defeat

Gus Poyet watches with Arsene Wenger Gus Poyet watches with Arsene Wenger

Gus Poyet has revealed his Albion side were bitterly disappointed to bow out of the FA Cup.

But the Seagulls boss was proud of his team’s efforts in the 3-2 defeat to Arsenal.

Poyet said: “We were much better than last year at this stage.

“We competed better, we were strong.

“Of course you expect to play against players who can do things better than you for longer.

“They have got Wilshere and Walcott fresh for the last 25 minutes and you are quite tired.

“You have already made two changes because of injuries in the first half so it is very difficult.

“We need to take it. It’s a funny feeling. We are more disappointed than we should be.

“The dressing room is like we lost a final and I think we competed very well.”

Super game and excellent effort from the Albion. It was a shame injuries forced substitutions and rearrangements and restricted Poyet tactically but all played very well. Particularly thought we threatened constantly down the right with Calderon, David and Buckley, and Ulloa's goal was just the sort of move we have been crying out for - whipped in cross met with a diving header. Simple and sweet! Just keep it up now for the league run in.

Only downside were the injuries to Buckley and Greer, particularly with Dunk up before the beak at the Bailey. Going to need to get someone in before the Sheff Weds game – probably someone more experienced than the Dutch lad, even if we can afford him.

Slightly bemused neither Vicente or Orlandi made the starting line up which I think restricted Bridge's effectiveness down the left but all played well so can't bemoan Gus's unpredictable selections.

A superb performance by the boys, well done. Two of Arsenals goals were fortunate to say the least. We competed very well for the full 90, lets hope the injuries to Greer and Buckley are not to serious. Welcome, Leandro Ulloa, great star to your Albion career.

Brilliant performance today - did us all proud. Ulloa is going to be a crowd favourite for sure

Any thoughts on?:

1. Ankergren - do we need another goalie? How come he is ahead of Brezovan?

2. Hamstrings (Greer and Buckley again) - how come we get so many issues since at The Amex?

3. most importantly of all of course - the CATERING - top of the steps as the half time whistle blew, front of the queue as the players came back out for the 2nd half - no steak and ale pies, no chicken and ham pies, nor hot dogs, nor burgers - indeed nothing hot at all apart from a cup of tea (additional milk not possible, no stirrer available and nowhere to stick the tea bag for the £2 a cup tea) - perhaps they weren't expecting a big crowd then today???? LINDLEY CATERING - please get your act together - you surely can't manage to be worse than the last lot can you?? 5,000 people probably don't bother per match in total before during and after the match to queue/ get food to be told there is none (a sign would be simple) - so I guess with decent margin that's 5,000 x £3 BHA profit per match - £15,000 x say 25 matches per annum = QUITE A LOT!! - maybe it's just an issue in West lower north end?

Finally, back to the match - pulsating, full blooded football - should CMS have scored that one at the end? Was it a pen? Great to see we went for it/ them? Let's do that for every match now till the end of the season and we'll be in the play offs - see Murray going for it rather than just slicing defensively against Federer - same sort of thing really - attack, run at them - UTA!!

Great performance today. Arsenal a tad on the lucky side. We would have got a draw but for the injuries. Ulloa looked very good - just what we have been needing and Barnes looked better with Ulloa there. I presume Gus took Ulloa off as he is not match fit. It's a pity he did because we missed his height at the front and the back with Greer having gone off. It enabled Arsenal to create more pressure which made it difficult for us to press forward. Fantastic effort though - well done!

Great game, and we were unlucky. Ulloa was onside for the tap in but I guess Barnes was off by a hair.Bemused why Gus left Vicente on the bench when we could have used his guile in the first half. Not taking anything away from our lads, especially Ulloa who slotted right in, and will be a crowd fave before too long. Only complaint ( I watched online so don't know about the pies situation) Why did Ankergen start ahead of TK? That very poor punch out cost us the game. Daresay that Greer would've cleared it more effectively. Arsenal are a top quality side and you can't afford any slips, but all in all we did ourselves proud today. The record crowd were fantastic. Now for the playoff places. UP THE ALBION!!

All things considered probably the best result. Great performance against a top premiership side, it will do the team's confidence the world of good... And no distraction of a high profile replay or 5th round cup tie to derail our promotion push.
I just hope the injuries to Greer & Buckley are not serious and they make a swift return.

Proud to be an Albion supporter, and glad to see Barnes shoving one to his critics on here, he's one of the hardest workers in the team and Gus has turned him from an out and out striker to a genuine utility player, he's a far more complete footballer now than last season and apart from a suspect temper (winners mentality) he's a prime asset.

Great effort everyone.
Ulloa as others have posted promising start and an option we have been missing.
Calderon, exellent professional really did not miss Greer to much .
Liam exellent as always rest of team good to above.
Gus tactics once game under way were compromised once injuries to Greer and Buckley had happened.
Not sure about keeper thing not a person around me that didn't have nervous disposition when ball got near Ankergren not that he played badly but we are not man u and I notice Arsen did not rest his number one!
Know there has to be some disappointment but think orlandi and Hoskins must be a bit peeved as they helped put us through? If same logic applied to keeper they deserved to start .
Enjoyable game and some players are growing in stature ie Barnes and get Gus regarding what he brings to the team.
Other opinions on above queries welcome, maybe I am well wide of the mark!

Wow what a great performance and what a good starting eleven by Gus.
Wouldn't be surprised if Wenger didn't table a bid for Bridcutt as he must have been impressed by him an dhe is the right age for a Wenger purchase.

Not surprised that Vicente stayed on the benchhe needs to fully recover for the next league match. I thought Barnes had a great game.

Ulloa delivered and his slow start to the match was very understandable, he took a while to get going to my eyes but once he did, well he looked class.

Greer injury is a worry.

In all honesty Arsenal were a tad better but we performed like a prem division team, like Gus I am very proud.

just one moan Mr Poyet...Why did you take off Ulloa (who was the tallest man in the side/wall) at the point of a very dangerous free kick on the edge of our box, could it not of waited?
looks like a good signing though but please ask uncle Tony for two more defenders before transfer window closes.

Brilliant performance! Could've easily been a Premier League game. Yes, they weren't at full strength but, arguably, neither were we (with Kuzczak and Vicente on the bench).

Good debut from Ulloa, could be just what we needed. Bridcutt, brilliant as always. Special mentions for Barnes, El Abd and Hammond who I thought was much more effective today.

Injuries are a big concern. Maybe a loan if we can't get Van Dijk (Virgil not Dick!).

Vicente and Orlandi kept fresh for next week.

If we can consistently play like that, no need to wait, let's get in those play-offs and get up. We are ready!

Shame Gus played Casper, who knows whether things would have been any different but fairly predictable howler cost us the 3rd goal, plus should have done better for the 2nd. Seems odd to rest the one position where fatigue is not likely to be an issue over the season. Ulloa looks tasty, Barnes just seems to make things happen (even though I personally find him frustrating), and I thought Lua Lua was excellent when he came on, so plenty to be pleased about, just hope we can push on in the next few games, playoff place is there for the taking.

Fabulous game and a harsh result at the end of the day. Probably the effort warranted a replay but their class came through in the end. Shame Casper chose to punch that cross. Same mistake as v Leeds last season. Dont understand why TK wasn't picked. Ulloa looked very promising. Big, strong lad, should do well in this league. Scoring in his first game will do his confidence the world of good. Pity it wasn't him instead of CMS on the end of that late chance. He would have had the strength to withstand the challenge. Finally, Having criticised Barnes in the past, I must say he was very good today. Took his goal well and a brilliant cross for the 2nd goal. Would have been everyone's hero if he'd put that first chance away. But all in all a great afternoon, just not the result we were all hoping for. I thought Giroud was awesome. What a strike that first goal was. His movement and shooting were top draw. Didn't really get the MoM award. Didn't feel today was one of Adam's better days.

Am always one of the first to criticise Barnes, but today he was very good the best I have seen him in an Albion shirt, should have been given mom in my opinion, the new striker was very good also, I noted that when he went off we appeared to defend deeper, I think we should have put on Vicente instead of CMS he can hold up the ball better which we have not really done well until Alloa came along, we looked so much better balanced, although Buckley and Greer going off did effect us, on balance the draw would not have been un just, I will be taking particular notice re the offside disallowed goal on the telly tonight.

Thoroughly enjoyed the game today and agree with those who've suggested we deserved a draw.

Very impressed with Ulloa - if he can play like that against Prem players he should be outstanding in the Championship.

The biggest plus for me is that we showed we have the ability to compete in the Prem, esp as if/when we get there we add 3 or 4 players with Prem experience.

Surprised that not one of you have mention that Walcot's goal could have been labled an own goal, sadly the ball was diverted in by El Abd, or at least it was to my eyes.
Watch it again if you can, you will see the deflection and change of direction of the ball.
Had the ball stayed straight I think CMS might have cleared it off the line, he looked to be in the right place to.

The simple answer is to have 50% of the peeple served where they are sitting, and not just at half time.

Are you serious ? He was outfought, out jumped, out run by Giroud the entire game. Adam has done really well this season but his shortcomings were exposed yesterday, albeit by a world class striker. Giroud scored two and missed two reasonable chances and was probably the overall MoM, so to give our MoM award to the guy who's supposed to be marking him is a bit illogical. I've been a Barnes critic this season, but I thought he would have been a deserved MoM yesterday. Great goal and an even better cross for Ulloah's goal. Credit where it's due !!
