Poyet: We must play like that every week

Gus Poyet needs to turn draws into victories Gus Poyet needs to turn draws into victories

GUS Poyet has challenged Albion to keep playing like they did against Arsenal to reach the Championship play-offs.

The Seagulls’ manager believes a top six spot beckons if they can reproduce the performance in Saturday’s 3-2 defeat by The Gunners in the FA Cup at The Amex in the league.

But he has warned they must also start turning draws into victories.

Albion are only one place but five points outside the play-offs ahead of Saturday’s trip to fifth-bottom Sheffield Wednesday.

The gap between them and half of the teams above them could increase before then, with fourth-placed Watford at Bristol City tonight, Crystal Palace in fifth at Huddersfield tomorrow night and second-placed Leicester at home to Wolves on Thursday night.

Although beaten only twice in the league since October, Albion have drawn five of their last eight games, including each of the last two at Birmingham and Blackburn Rovers.

Poyet said: “It’s a case of winning games. I’m not really a good stats man but the other day somebody said to me we have lost six in 28 and I said that’s not bad, I’ll take that.

“The problem is how many we have drawn, so we need to win games now, go to another level and win most of the games.

“I know if we maintain this level of performance (Arsenal) playing against Championship teams we have got a great chance. It’s in our hands. I know there are six teams ahead of us, I still think it’s in our hands.”

Overall, ours was a solid performance against Arsenal. Overall but not everywhere. Our defensive frailties were exposed at times but I feel that Ulloa will add that extra dimension that we've been craving. Still early days, but the signs were good. I see from his press conference that Arsene Wenger is tipping Brighton for the top flight; if we can keep this up, take 3 points rather than 1 from the majority of our remaining games, why not? I saw enough on Saturday to regain my early season confidence and if we can buy wisely before the Thursday deadline to shore up our defence, I reckon it's game on!!

Wonder if we can get Grant Hall on loan.

But what do I know?

Do you reckon 78 points will give us a play-off spot? With 18 games left that would mean an average of 2 points a game from here on in. More importantly, if we can take max points from the teams above us I'm sure we can make it.

Hello saraman,i did the "work out how many points your likely to get thing",and thought that without too many cockups,we should hit 79 points. Hopefully that will see us through.

Hello Yogi,i hope your right,i think the arrival of Leo ,(especially given his start) will see us with two up front.

All the best everyone,UTA

Wednesday will be a tougher proposition than when we last met. But I trust that all the Yorkshire seagulls will be there to cheer the lads on to victory.
