Painter's future in balance

Marcos Painter has found opportunities limited this season Marcos Painter has found opportunities limited this season

Marcos Painter’s Albion career is in the balance – because he has not played enough to earn a new contract.

The Seagulls’ second choice left-back is one of several players out of contract in the summer who are on appearance-related deals.

Painter revealed to The Argus: “I am the same as quite a lot of the lads. We’ve got this year option.

“It’s unlikely on my terms because I am not going to play half the league games now, so really it’s down to the club, like a lot of the players. I honestly don’t know what will happen or what the club is thinking.

“I never worry about these things, because it’s something you can’t affect. I am confident enough, whether it be here or somewhere else, in my own ability and with the things I have won in my career so far that I can do a job.”

Former Swansea defender Painter, 26, has been replaced in the first team this season by on-loan Wayne Bridge and has played only three games.

The priority should be in finding a way to keep Bridge!

With respect the priority right now is how do we get promoted.

If we make it the Bridge question become somewhat academic, he will either stay or come my way but with promotion, and the money it brings, we can deal with what ever happens.

The players that will be out of contract should be looked at in the same way. If we don't go up the squad would need making better for a challenge next season, some will go. If we do go up some will not be good enough at the new level, some will go.

Yes I would like to see Bridge stay but I think only promotion would keep him here. If we don't go up he will have to take a massive cut in wages next season, he could earn two or three times as much state side.

All the above is, IMHO.

He can still do a job for us if no new signings are made.

No promotion = No Bridge = No realistic LB.
We have had problems filling this position in the past, and therefore Painter should really be seriously considered for next season, imho.

With the development team committed to U21, runs out for the reserves could become limited too. I think MP and others will wait and see how we fair for the rest of the season before jumping.

But what do I know?

Good job some around here have a footballing brain.

I know memories are short, but Painter did a good job when he covered for Bridge if anyone can remember? He's only 26

If other clubs in the championship thought the same they would have come and taken him on loan long ago."FACT".I know 100% the club has been trying to move some of these players on.But not one other club wants them. They did the Crawley lads and Crawley got money for them."FACT".His just about a ok league one player.Thats why Gus got Bridge in you stupid person.

Didn't realise Painter was only 26; he seems to have been around for ages. Good, solid defender let down occasionally by his lack of pace. Has he ever played centre-back?

With the greatest respect the only out of contract players I would keep are Barnes, Bridcutt, El-Abd and Greer. I would sign Bridge. I would release other 28 including 18 development squad players that are out of contract as they are and never will be up to championship standard let alone premiership standard. Development squad is a myth as what has it actually produced? Nada!

We were playing against under-performing teams who lack of wide play was not a good yardstick to measure Marcus' performance this season. Bristol City's unwillingness to pass to their right winger was almost as comedic.
MP is a true professional that gets on with the job in hand and is aware of the demands of his position, I just feel he lacks a little pace for our style of play since promotion to this league and the versatility to cover any other position across the back 4.

But what do I know?

Marcus has been a fantastic professional for us. His effort, attitude and professionalism are a credit to both him and his family. A model Pro if you like.
I for one am very grateful to him for what he has done for us but it is now time for him to move on.
This season GP brought Bridge in and has now bought in the new Latvian lad.. Last year it was another left back on loan. This clearly tells us that no matter how good a pro Marcus is, GP recognises that he is not of Championship quality.
Given that we are clearly trying to push on and now have new standards being set by the likes of Bridcutt, Buckley, Bridge and Kuz to name but a few, it is time sadly to wave goodbye to some of the fantastic guys that helped us to get to where we are today.

I like Marcus. He's a very good pro, works hard and doesn't complain. I'm sure he'd be the first to admit he's no Bridge and not premier league quality but you could probably have 20+ painters for the price of 1 bridge so hardly a fair comparision. For a championship club looking for an adequate back up player he fits the bill.
Having said that I doubt he will be here next season as he's not vial to our mbitions and will probably want to play more football than he's played here.

Don't see the need to panic buy as others seem to think on this thread and prevoius one. centre back options are calde, brono( about to return ) ,painter, Hammond, bridcutt (there or there abouts anyway) Latvian everybody seems to have forgotten already ( he is 22 ,not 12) even bridge in there.maybe time to just use our multitude off attacking midfielders and adpot Kevin Keegan philosophy they score 3 we score 4 ,hell even newcastle that season finished second .
That would be good enough for us in this league! :-)

Excellent post, SMF20 and you didn't use the words "stupid", "idiot or an old favourite "brain-dead" once,,, Certain posters please take note and respect your fellow posters. Sadly you are probably right about MP but I too believe he could do a job for us for as long as Greer is out, IMHO of course....

Good spot, I didn't know they were playing. This means that we share the least defeats, 6, with Cardiff.

Middlesbrough have lost 11 times.

Marcos Painter is a solid Championship-standar
d defender; as far as I aware, he has never complained about the lack of playing time - and he has done well when called on.
Good professional, and worth another contract I reckon.

I don’t get the “who do we kick out next” attitude.

One minute the fans expect the utmost loyalty from our players and the next minute they are walking the plank.

For the record, Painter is not going anywhere, anytime soon.

With Zaha moving to Man U his mind will not be on the job at Palace. As I mentioned before I reckon we will finish in sixth place with Palace seventh. Wouldn't that be lovely?

Not good to start the day with but the situation with Gus to Chelsea is getting serious. I know this is from The Sun but the football pages are a bit better than the rest of it.

GUS POYET sent the bookies running for cover yesterday after a major plunge on him to be the next Chelsea manager.
Coral suspended betting on the Brighton boss after an avalanche of online bets forced them to cut his price from 25-1 to 3-1.
Spokesman Simon Clare said: “The sudden surge of bets on Poyet suggests something significant may have gone on in the Chelsea boardroom.”
Uruguayan Poyet, 45, has admitted it is difficult for managers to refuse an offer from Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.
Blues legend Poyet said: “The problem is Chelsea is too big to say ‘no.’
“So I think most managers would take it anyway.”

And for those without wisdom who say Gus has no experience at top level. On 29 October 2007, Poyet rejoined his former club Tottenham Hotspur to work alongside new head coach Juande Ramos as a first team coach. During his first season as assistant manager at White Hart Lane, he won the2007–08 League Cup, beating Chelsea 2–1 after extra time in the Final. His top level player success are to many to list.
Anyway by the end of the day we should have some good news on the player front.

Indeed. Quality left backs don't just grow on trees and Painter is good enough for the Championship - and we could easily be a 'Bridge-less' Championship team next year.

All idle speculation at the moment of course, but I can't help laughing at the ignorance of some (stress 'some') of the posts on here.

Just seen this on the BBC live site:
Joe Murton on Twitter: "We won't sign anyone, but boy oh boy do Arsenal need a left back now Kieran Gibbs is injured. Andre Santos looks like a pub player."
While I sort of agree, it might be a good idea to see where it is he drinks to see if there are any good centre halfs.
But what do I know?
