Upson on Albion's target list
10:08am Thursday 31st January 2013 in Sport By Andy Naylor
Mattew Upson, left, is a possible target
Matthew Upson is one of the candidates to solve Albion's centre-half crisis before the transfer window closes tonight.
The former England defender has been short of first team action at Premier League Stoke City.
Coach Charlie Oatway confirmed to The Argus this morning: "We've got a list of names left, right and centre and his name has come up.
"He is one of many. In a situation like this it's last minute.com. You are trying to bring somebody in. You gather all the information you have got and see which one you think would do a job at this particular time and fit into the group.
"He is a name that has been thrown into the equation."
Oatway also revealed Lewis Dunk, currently involved in a court case, could feature in the squad at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
Oatway took over at short notice from manager Gus Poyet, who was due to attend his regular Thursday morning press conference at The Amex.
Oatway said: "The gaffer's doing some business."
Albion have also been keen on Birmingham centre half Curtis Davies but he is expected to sign for Norwich.
Swansea's Alan Tate has been linked with the Seagulls as well, although a source has told The Argus he trained with the Welshmen this morning and was oblivious afterwards to any interest.

Where's Gus then? One bookie has stopped taking bets on him being the next Chelsea manager! Can't see it myself but he is ambitious.

The mere fact we`ve got one of the best LBs in the country in WB may help another premiership player decide to come to us. Why not Upson, they almost certainly know each other from the National squad!. UTA
Rumours very strong regarding Gus I'm afraid but there are still some good managers available such as Curbushley and (dare I say it?) Adkins.

Handing the reins of Chelsea to Gus would be like a small corner store manager taking over a giant Asda super store.
Gus does not have the experience, in fact he has zero experience, of running such a big club with massive fan and boardroom expectations.
If he took us to the prem and kept us there for a season or two things might be different but that has yet to happen.
Assistant manager at Chelsea would make more sense.
If it went wrong for him at Chelsea it would set his premiership ambitions back several years.

Gus has experience of being assistant manager at a very big club - Spurs - so it won't exactly be alien to him. An assistant is effectively shadowing the main man at every stage. Moving from managing Brighton to becoming an assistant again is NEVER going to happen.
I am a big Gus fan, what he has done and is doing here is amazing but a move to Chelsea, very dangerous for both parties.

Really hope this Upson deal has some legs. I really liked him at West Ham, reads the game well, strong and good in the air. Think he would be our answer until the end of the season. I was getting a bit worried for a min with all that talk about GP and the bookies but as someone said Benitez isn't going anywhere until the end of the season ;-) UTA

Upson, yep I can see him doing a job for us, loan deal until end of season seems about right.
Long term purchase, I like Omar Gonzalez of L.A. Galaxy but he can wait for summer window.
Could we get Curtis, well I suppose we could but the price tag will be big and thinking about what we offered for Dijk, reported to be 2 million, I don't see it happening as I think at least 3 million would be needed.
