Upson on Albion's target list

Mattew Upson, left, is a possible target Mattew Upson, left, is a possible target

Matthew Upson is one of the candidates to solve Albion's centre-half crisis before the transfer window closes tonight.

The former England defender has been short of first team action at Premier League Stoke City.

Coach Charlie Oatway confirmed to The Argus this morning:  "We've got a list of names left, right and centre and his name has come up.

"He is one of many. In a situation like this it's last minute.com. You are trying to bring somebody in. You gather all the information you have got and see which one you think would do a job at this particular time and fit into the group.

"He is a name that has been thrown into the equation."

Oatway also revealed Lewis Dunk, currently involved in a court case, could feature in the squad at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Oatway took over at short notice from manager Gus Poyet, who was due to attend his regular Thursday morning press conference at The Amex.

Oatway said: "The gaffer's doing some business."

Albion have also been keen on Birmingham centre half Curtis Davies but he is expected to sign for Norwich.

Swansea's Alan Tate has been linked with the Seagulls as well, although a source has told The Argus he trained with the Welshmen this morning and was oblivious afterwards to any interest.

I don't know anything about him but he doesn't look very tall.

He used to have a decent reputation, especially when he was at West Ham, but I'm not sure whether that's still the case since he's gone under the radar.

Re Matthew Upson... 6'1" and 33... Could do worse although the guy never lived up to his early promise as a youngster at Arsenal who paid £2M for him as an 18 year old in 1997 - makes VVD look like an absolute bargain 15 years on... Surely Upson would only a short term solution... and not a major investment. I would stick by Vincelot and Dunky...

Arsenal, West Ham, Stoke ( and others ) and he has also played for England ! If he is fit he could be a good signing possibly on a loan until the end of the season to see if it works out for him and us ?? Fingers crossed.

Good player but don't think he has played at this level? Still, one month loan to cover Gordon would be alright. Bearing in mind how short of players we are at CB maybe a loan till the end of the season would be prudent.

Where's Gus then? One bookie has stopped taking bets on him being the next Chelsea manager! Can't see it myself but he is ambitious.

Bets aren't off with all bookies - some still have him as 2/1, which is still less likely than likely. And that's only for next manager - nothing about its happening today.

Just to re-iterate, all betting is NOT suspended - only some bookies, prob those which have had large single bets. It doesn't take much for these to runaway with themselves.

Rumours very strong regarding Gus I'm afraid but there are still some good managers available such as Curbushley and (dare I say it?) Adkins.

I am a big Gus fan, what he has done and is doing here is amazing but a move to Chelsea, very dangerous for both parties.

Handing the reins of Chelsea to Gus would be like a small corner store manager taking over a giant Asda super store.

Gus does not have the experience, in fact he has zero experience, of running such a big club with massive fan and boardroom expectations.

If he took us to the prem and kept us there for a season or two things might be different but that has yet to happen.
Assistant manager at Chelsea would make more sense.

If it went wrong for him at Chelsea it would set his premiership ambitions back several years.

No-one has experience of running a massive club until they start running a massive club! Gus has experience of being assistant manager at a very big club - Spurs - so it won't exactly be alien to him. An assistant is effectively shadowing the main man at every stage. Moving from managing Brighton to becoming an assistant again is NEVER going to happen.

Really hope this Upson deal has some legs. I really liked him at West Ham, reads the game well, strong and good in the air. Think he would be our answer until the end of the season. Saraman, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, Sarah will confirm that.

Upson, yep I can see him doing a job for us, loan deal until end of season seems about right.

Long term purchase, I like Omar Gonzalez of L.A. Galaxy but he can wait for summer window.

Could we get Curtis, well I suppose we could but the price tag will be big and thinking about what we offered for Dijk, reported to be 2 million, I don't see it happening as I think at least 3 million would be needed.

As pleased as I am about keeping our gems I do feel a tad insulted that we have not had to decline any offers, well none that we know of.

In terms of first team players just one in and zero out, a good thing as we keep our gems, a bad thing that nobody feels that our gems are worth buying.

Sometimes it's funny, at other times very frustrating. Comments are a very small part of the job. Jo and I edit videos, upload all the news stories to the website, build new sections, pages, picture galleries etc as well as monitor and manage The Argus on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Pinterest and Foursquare. Monitoring the site metrics is also a key part of the job.
Cover is already organised for the time when I'm off before Jo returns as you have to be a journalist with legal qualifications.

Vegas, I can't be bothered to explain. If you bring someone in at the 11th hour it can be interpreted as a panic move, especially given how the Dobbie move worked out... By the way it isn't 'I am not understanding' but simply 'I don't understand'... and please don't ask me why.

Pleased to see Matt Upson will be in until the end of the season. The prospect of Bridge, Upson, Greer and Bruno across the back is awe-inspiring and TK must have a sly and possibly smug grin creeping across his face.
