Gus insists no one is to blame for Dobbie's quick exit

Stephen Dobbie Stephen Dobbie

Stephen Dobbie’s departure from Albion, five months after signing from Swansea City, has been defended by manager Gus Poyet.

The Uruguayan says a combination of reasons were responsible for Dobbie’s move not working out and his deadline day exit to the Seagulls’ bitter rivals Crystal Palace.

Poyet has likened the situation to Steven Pienaar’s unsuccessful switch from Everton to Tottenham.

Dobbie, signed in the final moments of the August transfer window, left for Palace on loan with a view to the move becoming permanent in July in the dying stages of the January window.

Poyet said: “The moment it was a possibility to get him I was convinced he was the perfect player for us, to play between the lines, arrive late, get goals, play in different positions in a front three or even behind the striker.

“I don’t think there is one reason, one person responsible. I think it didn’t click, that’s all. I am more than happy to take the blame but it’s a mix of things, the way we play, the player, the results, the team.

“The best way to explain it is a similar situation to Steven Pienaar. He was a very good player who was making the difference at Everton.

“Spurs thought he was the perfect player for them and for some reason that no-one knows it doesn’t work.

“He goes back to Everton and he is the same fantastic player that everyone knew.”

Dobbie’s recent relegation from the first team squad coincided with the return from long-term injury of Vicente but Poyet said: “There are plenty of things that have changed, not only Vicente. Last weekend Hosko (Will Hoskins) was out of the squad as well and in previous games he was maybe one step ahead of Dobbs.”

Albion and Palace negotiated an initial loan solution to Dobbie’s complicated move to Selhurst Park to comply with FIFA regulations regarding the number of clubs a player can play for on a permanent basis in one season.

If it doesn't work it doesn't work. The time I have seen him he has looked very off the pace and sometimes disinterested. The system didn't suit him and the players we have he wouldn't have made the squad if everybody was fit. Even though its Palarse I wish him all the luck.

I assume he can't play against us?

No, part of the deal in either the league game or the playoffs if they are lucky enough to get there.

I don't like to see the word, 'blame,' used when talking of a player leaving, it smacks of preparing a defense should Dobbie go on to score a bunch of goals. There are those that, 'blame,' Poyet for Murray leaving.

Fact is the guy didn't fit and now he has gone.

As I suggested a couple of weeks ago, IMHO, Dobbie was bought because we thought CMS was on his way but in the end that deal didn't happen. It seems, from what Gus is saying, that Dobbie didn't click on the training field, the system didn't suit him and if that is the case, CMS going or staying has nothing to do with it.
Hoskins being one step ahead of Dobbie puts him (Hoskins) on the bench and Dobbie out in the cold. With Barnes playing as he is Hoskins will have to show, in training, that he can step in front of CMS or Barnes to win his starting place, but I think he can do it where as Dobbie couldn't.

No blame, just a player that has moved on and I wish him luck.

The most interesting bit of this story for me is that a permanent move has been arranged. Dobbie will from now on play for Palace. I assume we are unable to sell him to anyone else or call him back, so for to all intents and purposes a permanent transfer has taken place now, so the FIFA rule is ineffective and has been circumvented.

Dobbie has been a good player everywhere else but with us it was more Dobbin than Dobbie. ;-)

You touch on a point I was pondering. Talksport on Thursday were stating Dobbie on loan with a view to a permanent signing. However, is it that Palace are now contractually committed to signing permanently on Ist July next?

Sounds like "Face not fitting" syndrome.
He is a decent player and maybe there was a clash of personalities?

I think your suggestion on the circumstances regarding Dobbie's signing is probably accurate, Vegas. On the training issue, I'm not sure what Hoskins has to do to be 'ahead of CMS' Great admirer of CMS and hopefully with Ulloa now, we will see the best of him depending on how the manager sets the team up - but I think most posters will agree that CMS has looked a bit indifferent the last few weeks.

Wiseman it is my understand that the two clubs got around the FA rules by calling the move an, 'emergency loan.'

If Palace were to get promoted would this, emergency loan player come back to Brighton due to the fact that Palace wouldn't see him as prem quality.
What if he under performs at Palace just as he has with us, do they send him back at the end of the season.

If Palace are contractually committed to signing him on July 1st then I would see that as a really bad move on their part. Surely this deal only works for them if they, 'don't,' get promoted.

Thanks for your comments, Vegas. I wonder how Dobbie will perform between now and July 1st? Interesting with Kevin Phillips there as well.

IMO it didn't work because Gus wants very mobile forwards that work hard and ensure the team doesn't lose it's shape. Dobbie is perfect for the manager who's more offensive and is willing to risk losing the ball in order to keep the opposition on the back foot and look to score more goals. Dobbie was never going to track back and he needs to be part of a 2 or 3 man strike force.

Spot on post. But to me he never really seemed want it enough. That was the disappointing thing even if system did not suit him. 4 signings that day, one didn't no a bad ratio Gus..

I am pleased to report that Steve Dobbie had a very effective debut yesterday - made a goal for Glenn Murray within minutes of coming on.

Once again, thank you GP !
