Albion duo set to return from injury to face Tigers

Bruno was an unused sub on Saturday after suffering from flu

Albion could be boosted by the return to the starting line-up of Will Buckley and Bruno for Saturday’s visit by Hull City.

The right winger and right-back are both on course to face Steve Bruce’s promotion-chasers after sitting out the 3-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.

Buckley was substituted at half-time in the FA Cup tie against Arsenal at The Amex ten days ago with a recurrence of hamstring trouble.

He will take part in most of today’s training session and manager Gus Poyet is “100% sure” he will be available for Hull, providing there are no setbacks in his recovery.

Bruno was back in the squad as an unused substitute at Hillsborough on Saturday following long-term Achilles problems.

Poyet revealed: “Bruno was very unlucky. He had ‘flu Wednesday and Thursday. He trained somehow on Friday but he has completely recovered now and is fine for Saturday.”

Midfielder Andrew Crofts is still a week away from his return from a hamstring injury.

Abdoulaye Faye is expected to be missing from the heart of the Hull defence due to a calf injury sustained in Saturday’s victory at Millwall.

The Tigers’ matchwinner David Meyler has been withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland squad for tomorrow night's friendly against Poland but his knee wound is unlikely to sideline him from the tea-time trip to the South Coast.

What is happening with JFC? Don't think he has featured for the DS team since coming back from loan and does not appear to be anywhere near the first XI (behind Hammond, Crofts, Dicker), another loan out?

I am pleased to see these two return. I think they could both be essential facing Hull who are almost certain to press high and not allow us to settle on the ball, preventing us from playing our often ponderous build up play. We have been caught out with this tactic in the past but Buckers speed will keep attack minded wing backs preoccupied. Hopefully he will be assisted on the other wing too. If we are going to come out on Saturday night with 3 points we will have to be much more direct in our build up and the use of 2 very fast wingers is a key part of that... imho of course. Fingers crossed.

We need Buckley back to his best, if we are going to make the play offs.
I have hunch that cms playing in Barnes role will produce something exciting .
As for jfc he did himself no favours at Oxford, he ended up sub for end of his loan period after a good start. I hope he pushes on.

Which Barnes role? Surely his greatest strength is that he has more than one? I might be wrong, but I can't see CMS being used as anything other than an out and out centre forward.

Great news. Bruno and Buckley combine exceptionally well. And they are both potential match winners.

Hope CMS and Ulloa work together – there were signs of it on Saturday. A pity about Barnes’s temperament – he’s been doing a valuable job the length of the field, of late.

Ever since Bennett was sold we’ve missed a genuine box-to-box player – so vital with Bridcutt sitting deep as, without one, Gus is prevented from playing two strikers up front. Perhaps Lopez is the nearest we have to a box-to-box player, now.

Gus might not want to throw caution to the wind with too attacking a formation against Hull of all teams – one of the best counter-attacking sides in the league.

Given his size and apparent physicality, he seems - like CMS but in a different way - more suited to being a proper centre forward.

Yes you are probably right but given that Poyet only plays one out and out striker I wonder if that means that CMS is now nothing more than cover for Ulloa as he is not big and strong enough to play the hold up guy.

I believe Ulloa will lead the line on the break, predominently taking the back post on most attacks while CMS goes near post. CMS will probably continue to harry the oppo defence and back line when they are in posssession, with Ulloa dropping back behind him.

This 4-4-2, playing Ulloa and CMS together conversation keeps coming up since Ulloa arrived. Most people seem to agree that it's unlikely Gus will play two out-and-out strikers. It certainly doesn't look likely, at least from the start of a game.

So, then the discussion moves to CMS playing behind Ulloa or vice versa. I totally agree with Old Scrote on this. They are both centre forwards and, for different reasons, aren't really suited to playing in that 2nd striker or "number 10" role.

I'm just intrigued as to what characteristics/attr
ibutes people think a player should have to play this "number 10" position....

The position is mainly to link the midfield to the attack so, in my mind, it requires a player with good touch to control the ball in a tight space, creativity, vision to pick a killer pass and technique to play the pass needed.

I believe we have a few players that possess those attributes. Vicente being the stand out but also Orlandi and Lopez. Basically, the Spanish players! (No coincidence there!)

CMS, IMHO, could not be described with any of the above attributes. So, as long as I'm seeing that position in the correct way, CMS is just not an option.

I've said before in another thread that I don't really see playing 2 strikers being an advantage in our style of play as I think it suits counter-attacking teams far more.

Anyway, just wondered how others saw this number 10 position and how they see CMS managing to fill it. I wasn't just picking on you SoS, it was just your post I happened to quote!
