Dean Hammond is prepared to step into Liam Bridcutt's shoes for Albion if the stand-in skipper picks up another booking.

Bridcutt is still on nine yellow cards,  one away from an automatic two-match suspension.

Hammond has spent most of the season playing alongside him but would be the obvious candidate to switch into Bridcutt's defensive midfield slot shielding the back four.

Hammond said: "He's been on nine for a few weeks now. It may happen, it may not happen but there are a few of us that could probably step into that role. Maybe it's more natural for me but we'll wait and see."

Bridcutt will hand the captaincy back to Gordon Greer if the fit-again central defender comes straight back into the side for tomorrow night's trip to Championship leaders Cardiff City.

Ashley Barnes (ban) and Andrew Crofts (hamstring) are still sidelined, while Will Hoskins has surgery in Germany today to repair the long-term cruciate and medial knee ligament damage he suffered in last week's 1-1 home draw against Blackburn Rovers.
