Charlie Grice has been surprisingly left out of the Great Britain squad for the European Indoor Championships next month.

The 19-year-old from Brighton looked to have sealed his place when he achieved the qualifying time of 3min.42sec for the 1,500m at the British Athletics Grand Prix in Birmingham on Saturday.

Grice was ranked second at the distance behind Chris Warburton but the selectors have decided to take neither of them to Gothenburg. Grice, of Phoenix, did not earn an automatic pick as he finished third at the UK trials two weeks ago when a top two spot would have guaranteed his place.

Lee Emanuel, from Hastings, was also left out of the 29-strong team for Sweden. Emanuel did not achieve the qualifying time for the 3,000m but was the top ranked runner for the distance behind Mo Farah - who is not competing in the Europeans - and was second in the trials over 1,500m.
