Kuszczak shines as Albion stun leaders

Tomasz Kuszczak had an inspired night in South Wales as Albion stunned the Championship leaders.

The Pole made several key saves to help the Seagulls wrap up a coveted 2-0 win at Cardiff City.

Andrea Orlandi and Leo Ulloa scored late in each half, each time assisted by David, to give Albion’s play-off push a major boost.

Orlandi met David’s right-wing cross in the 43rd minute with a deft left-foot touch which glanced the ball just inside the far post.

That neat finish broke the deadlock – but the game was only even at that stage thanks to the work of Kuszczak.

He dived high to his right to push away a Peter Whittingham curler but topped that in the 32nd minute after Craig Bellamy latched on to Dean Hammond’s weak back pass.

Bellamy seemed to have rounded the diving Kuszczak until the keeper stuck out his left hand to swat the ball away from the striker, then recovered to block a follow-up from the same player.

Kuszczak also denied sub Craig Conway after the break by tipping his searing 20-yard drive away from the top corner.

He also made other smart saves and handled well.

Albion had to withstand periods of concerted pressure from the leaders.

But they had their moments too in the first half and David Marshall dived high to his right to push away Ulloa’s shot.

Ulloa settled the outcome deep in added time when his shot deflected in after David had intercepted a Cardiff pass, broken away down the right and picked out the centre-forward in front of goal.

Ill take that tonight.

We have done to many teams what Cardiff did to us tonight and come away with nothing.
Tonight was our night to have a little luck and I for one think we are due a little more before the season ends.

Icing on the cake for me is that Vicente gets another few days to recover before what will hopefully be another master class on Saturday.

Well done boys

Too right, SMF20. Pick your cliche. What goes around comes around. Luck evens itself out over the course of the season.

It's about time we got the rub of the green - and there could be no better time than at Cardiff tonight.

When I heard there had been a late goal I feared the worst, but Spanish Len came up with the goods.

Magnificent win given the fact that Gus only had one striker at his disposal.

Only dampener is the injury to Hammond and the booking for Bridders, which I believe means a two-match ban.

Still, you can only worry about today. Imagine all the posts about Murray and Dobbie scoring for Palace if we'd lost. UTA!

With Liam out now for a couple of games and Hammond injured I wonder if Gus might dip in to a premiership club for a short term loan for someone.

Obviously we have other guys that could potentially do a job but if we are honest, Liam and Dean are our most defensive minded midfield players and I would rather the Vicente's and Orlandi's of this world carried our attacking threat.

Brilliant win, beyond my expectations (tho not my dreams). Now we MUST follow it up with 3pts on Sat.

Pleased to see JFC on the bench - presumably a sign Gus thinks he's progressing. Would like to see him given 15 mins or so at the Amex.

Anyone know why CMS wasn't in the 18? Presumably a training injury but it would be good to have more info.

Result of the season. Huge backs to the wall effort in the second half especially. Probably on another day Cardiff could have won by a couple of goals with the shots and occasional clear cut chances they had, but that's the way it goes sometimes. Feared the worse with six minutes stoppage but fortunately Cardiff were shot by then and Brighton looked the only likely to score in the last few minutes. Pleased that Ulloa got himself a goal - Steve Claridge did not have much good to say about him on Five Live Extra commentary. Most of the plaudits seemed to be for Bridcutt who will be a huge miss for the next two games especially with Hammond going off injured. Maybe Crofts will be fit? Squad suddenly looking a little thin at the moment but hopefully any injuries will get sorted by the weekend.

VegasSeagull says...

MOM has to be Kusz for Brighton and Bellamy for Cardiff.

It is my hope that we can return to two strikers, Ulloa was stranded for most of the match, but that said, he took his goal well.

I know not all will agree with me but I thought Hammond had a good game. Bridcutt picked up his yellow but that was a tackle he had to make.

Throughout the game we gave the ball away too easily, too many badly placed passes.

The amount of pressure we soaked up was almost too much to bare. Bellamy was the source of my fears for much of the game and when Noone went off his replacement had me more than a little worried, Noone didn't over impress me.

I thought Buckley had a weak night, something has gone from his game, his starting place could come under pressure.

It was a great performance and yet in other ways it wasn't, I know that sounds daft.
When we broke out we looked dangerous untill we reached the final third and then we had to pass backwards, no one was there in front of the break. I think that largely was down to the fact that Ulloa got back a lot to help defend and he doesn't have the pace of CMS for the breakaway.

A terriffic result brought about by some terriffic defending, we deserved the three points just for the way we defended.

Loved our first goal, a good pass by Hammond to get David away down the flank and then a great pass for Orlandi to finish with ease, even tho it wasn't that easy.

Freeloader Leo and Barnes are the only strikers we have left not hard to pick them, lol, but I agree it should be interesting to see how they perform together. Barnes set Ulloa up perfectly for his goal against Arsenal.

You single out Bridge, and yes he was excellent but Upson didn't do much wrong either. Greer could still be on the bench come the weekend match. El-Abd did his best to get inside the head of Bellamy but he was too experienced to allow it to happen, but they did exchange a few words now and then.

I thought The ref got the Bellamy free kick right on the edge of the box wrong. I didn't see it as a foul and if it was, it was inside the box so a penalty would have been right.

I think Hammond will be fit for the weekend, with Bridcutt getting his yellow no doubt Gus didn't want to risk letting Hammond try to run off his knock.

I think several of us predicted GG wouldn't start, but because his absence from the squad indicates a virus we shouldn't be too swift in claiming credit for our predictions (ie we can't know for sure whether he would have played or not).

VegasSeagull says...

Old Scrote, it's true that hamstring injuries do vary in their severity but three weeks from sustaining the injury to back playing is quick, even for a less severe hamstring tear.

I am glad Greer didn't play tonight as the defense were flat our for 90 minutes, if Greer was not 100% he might have been hurt even more.

The performances today could suggest that fit or not, Greer is on the bench.

I have no idea but could Upson do the Bridcutt job, has he ever played in that role.

Unlikely but David Lopez could fill in nicely for Bridcutt. We know he is very versatile, and have played him defensively when he filled in as a right back with great success. GP got his tacticts right tonight and our defenders should get a large pat on the back. Ulloa does need somone playing off him as he does hold the play up well and is good in the air, not sure where CMS is tonight as there has been no news of injuries. Really pleased for Ulloa getting off the mark. He works his socks off and has a good first touch for a big fellow.

Pity about Bridcutt but we knew it was coming and I would think like a previous poster that Lopez could fill in there. He's a proper footballer and has filled in admirably in defense before.

We must capitalise on this great result now by winning these next two home games. What really pleases me is that I sense there has been a shift in belief levels and everyone, including Gus, seems to acknowledge that we can make the play offs at worst. This was so necessary as without belief you have no chance. Roll on Saturday.

Great result, and well overdue lucky one tbh. TK was immense. I can see why Cardiff are top, they had pace all over the pitch with Bellamy especially still a major handful. I love Gus's tippy tappy style but think if we could enhance that with more speed or sudden acceleration or a bit more directness at times we'd be a formidable team (eg. Cardiff themselves, or Watford). When we lost the ball up the Cardiff end last night they were bearing down on TK in no time.

No Barnes for 3 matches - just coincidence? What do you reckon? What's the difference he makes?

I guess we'll have another half a match or so whilst he comes back to fitness levels - always good to debate just how much specialness he brings to the team - no one doubts his input of course

My thoughts too, guys. Seems the logical thing to do, with all involved havin previously played in those positions. El-Abd used to play this position in front of the back four routinely, in seasons gone by, albeit in a lower division. Time moves on though, and he appears to prefer the centre-back role.

Yep, the great thing this year is that we can cover any injury or suspension.

Also I didn't know what to think until Vegas got his helicopter back to Sussex from Cardiff to give us his wisdom. Sometimes you just have to thank God for the gift he has given us. Lucky for us Vegas has no mates otherwise we may never here his babble. Every single day.
Why the grumpy post, Simon? Looking at the posting time, you need to go to bed a bit earlier, lol. Fantastic win, let's hope the momentum it gives us continues...

I know it's obvious but tell me if you do not agree the one thing that is crucial I feel now to the rest of the season is that in each game we need to get the first goal I always feel we look better and play better once we have got that but preferably earlier than yeaterday but cannot complain .
What a goalkeeper tomasz is. I feel best since Kuipers and I also feel the Barnes Leo duo may work quit we'll for the rest of this season don't know if you agree but
UTA !!!!

The silly posts run off me like water off a duck's back.

If people say we were lucky to win yesterday they are taking away the fact that our team defended like giants, the work rate and commitment was 100%. We had three good chances to score and made two of them. I don't see that as luck, I see that as a fantastic team performance.

I suppose if luck got us three oints then Cardiff must have been unlucky. They created double figures in decent scoring chances, they finished not one of them. That is not bad luck, that is bad finishing and a great job by TK. I would have have said the same about our team when we couldn't find the back of the net.

We were not lucky to get three points, we DESERVED three points.

Being a slow typer ,i am more than a little niffed that the post i spent so long on,complementing our immense win,and superb team and players, was omitted,i can only assume it is because ,i put 4 *,when saying all our decanters, can do what they do best. It makes me wonder if this truly is a football site,or an argus Advertisement. UTA
