Gus puts recruitment plans on hold

Albion will not be buying many players next season if they are still in the Championship, boss Gus Poyet has warned.

He says it is an “absolute nightmare” trying to sort out player contracts and potential new signings, due to Financial Fair Play rules and uncertainty about which league the promotion-chasing Seagulls will be playing in.

Chairman Tony Bloom is back from his winter break in Australia but most of the players out of contract this summer will have to wait for decisions on their futures. The list includes Vicente, David, Adam El-Abd and Gary Dicker.

Poyet told The Argus: “We decided to wait a little bit. The players knew that from a long time ago. Of course, everybody is individual. The majority will need to wait.

“Next year everything changes. The circumstances are going to be really unique with the Financial Fair Play. Everything has to be so by the book and careful. We need to put the players in the right places with the right numbers and the right money.

“The other thing is the division. We have been looking for a while at the quantity of players and now we are getting to the point where you really need to intensify the decision-making in terms of who you will take out.

“In normal circumstances you will know but now, in the situation we are in, we are still not looking for big transfers because it doesn’t look like we are going to have enough money to buy many players in the Championship.

“Of course, you will have plenty if you are in the Premiership. It’s an absolute nightmare, practically impossible.

“Everything changes then, because you have to buy, to spend. The income is massive but during that time you need to be realistic as well about how difficult it is.”

Poyet’s scouts are in the process of drawing up a list of transfer targets if Albion are still in the Championship, another list if they are promoted to the Premier League.

He said: “It's very, very difficult. Imagine, you could have a player from the Premiership coming to you for free to play in the Premiership or from the Championship to play for you in the Championship.

“If you look at the players now you will like the Premiership one. You get excited about him and then you need to get the Championship one and then he looks worse, even though he is a good player.”

If we end up in the championship, then it's down to lack of goals. Or lack of simply puting the ball away .
Squad need a good trim of nearly good enough s, is cms worth17k a week? Hammond another on very good money? The new rules will stop average players asking for and getting silly money..
For me if we do fall at the last hurdle, it's down to experience at this level up front.

Just borrow a whole team like Watford.

I am as confident as anyone can be regarding promotion to the Premier League given the uncertainty of football, but I think we will do it. Mark as you know I have long championed the idea about doing something about excessive salaries, seemingly average players being paid 12k a week, "industry standard wage structures". Hopefully the financial fair play rules will do something about this, clubs should no longer be able to afford to play average players fantastic salaries. However the big boys, I'm afraid will find a way around this, like your "sponsor", paying £400m to put their name on your stadia!

In response to Alan G Skinner.
Where do you get your figures from in relation to 400m to name the stadium,(which by the way is a 5 year deal)if you are referring to The Amex, you are way way off target. If that had been the case our stadium which has cost 115 m to date plus 35 m for the academy would all be paid for plus a nice 250 m profit.

if we do go up - I think we'll make the play-offs but not make promotion - and come back down again, does anyone know how much we collect in the so-called parachute payment?

I think it does up considerably next season with new TV deal.

He's referring to one of the 'big boys': Etihad / Man City.

(By the way, The Amex naming rights are a ten-year-deal.)

Off topic, if anyone is interested in excellent in depth footy discussion, I recommend The Footballer's Football Show (Sky Sports Thurs evenings or available as a podcast...my own personal method of reception). Interesting guests, insightfully informative and at times fascinating.

Other podcasts recommended are 5Live's World Football Phone-in, The NPower Football League Podcast with Mark Clemitt and our own Albion Roar.

Any film buffs might like Simon Mayo (Worthing boy!) and Mark Kermode's show.

Good stuff. I also like Sunday Supplement on Sky and podcast. Although predominately discussions center on Premiership topics, some top sports journos, including Henry Winter, Martin Samuel, Andy Northcroft and Paul Hayward.

Interesting that the Leicester owners have just bought their stadium for £17 mil. Not sure what it cost but it cannot be much more than 10-15 years old, and I guess maybe £30 mil to build. Sets some level of depreciation for our balance sheet, if you assume it halves in value over 10 years, then the cost to the p&l is £5mil per year. This is quite a chunk of money to earn before you start paying for players and staff.

I still find the 'Financial Fair Play' stuff quite confusing. Does anyone know how to get hold of a definitive guide to read and understand, particularly the small print?

Lol .. How about Qpr .. Players out in Dubai on lash... So drunk they could not train for two days! They will be in serious financial trouble if they don't get back to the premiership at the first time.
The Albion need to step up its commercial side, ie the shocking service at the Amex. Most people can't get a drink at half time unless you miss the last 5 mins of the half, they then leave 5 mins before game ends to get first train!,,, !! Unless that's sorted, people will vote with there feet and not buy season tickets, rather pick games they want to see.

All this naming rights is stupid, to be fair we are sponsored by American Express but on the plus side it was from day one, in truth who ever sponsors it in future I think it'll always be known as the Amex!!

The question is "If we go up and come back down again.....". Hector happens to think we'll get to the play-offs but not go up.

QPR have been mentioned in this thread. Aren't we all glad that our club is improving and building so much but without putting the club at financial risk. We have come from some very dark days. I appreciate for much younger fans, this is harder to see but we have to be so pleased with where we are now compared to where we could've been. And the first objective must be to NEVER EVER go back to the dark days. If we reach the promised land, we will have got there the right way, and with our current manager, also playing in a great way.

We are in a good position and can learn, and have learnt from by other clubs mistakes.

Still can't work out why Wolves sacked McCarthy without finding a replacement.

QPR should have stuck with Warnock.

Still surprised at Adkins getting sacked and the jury is out whether they will survive. The Shampton v QPR game should be interesting today.

You keep saying how hard it is to drink at half-time, yet I never have a problem. Which part of the ground are you in? And people will ALWAYS leave early to avoid the rush - it is the same at every ground in the country, so why do you think there is something the Albion can do about it?

I sat on north last season,
East upper this year! I have run bars and cafe bars... Service is shocking!
If the staff moved any slower the food would go off!
Cheap labour in hospitality does not work.. They have no desire to do a good job, or work quickly, the window of graft is from say 1.45 to 3 then 3 40 to 4 pm. There are no supervisors checking from the customers side, queue for 10 minutes to get a tea or coffee is simply terrible.
Beer should be pulled prior to half time, food is sold out, or not ready, so do you queue again or simply not bother? I now eat at the station pub in hove, have beer or two then get cab. Cheaper than the Amex and no queuing.

Surely we have players from the DS that must be very near for first team football?
I understand the need for quality players but what's the point in having the DS if we are not going to use players that the club must see a future for otherwise we would not have them on our books!.

What it really means is if we don't get up this year or next then we won't get up at all as the relegated teams from the Prem will be awash with so much cash we won't be able to compete.

You would have thought this would be correct, however in practice, even with this advantage, it hasn't worked out in recent years for Portsmouth, Burnley, Hull, Blackpool, Birmingham, Bolton, Blackburn and Wolves.

All it means is that we have to run and manage our club better than the others with bigger budgets.

Brighton will not be buying many players next year if we do not get promoted, so that means we are planning to keep many of the existing squad, if we can.

That is not good news for those of us who would like to see Poyet here for the next four or five years.
How many times do you want to do the same puzzle before the picture becomes boring.

There will be clubs in the prem next year that will decide that it's time for a new manager, lower to middle order clubs, Poyet could get his chance. To keep Poyet at Brighton I would have thought he needs to be able to continue to build the squad, if only to ensure his future interest in what he is doing.

It seems that next year, if we do not get promoted, we will have to become a, sell to buy club, that is not good. The financial restrictions of the Fair Play rule will help safe guard some clubs future's, but it will also make it hard for us to keep some of our gems who are nearing the end of their contracts.

This statement from Gus is worrying on a couple of levels.
