Poyet thanks hat-trick hero
6:44pm Saturday 2nd March 2013 in Sport By Brian Owen
Gus Poyet congratulates Leo Ulloa on his hat-trick
Gus Poyet has thanked his hat-trick striker for heading off another tense finish at The Amex.
Leo Ulloa completed a treble to help Albion to a 4-1 win at home to Huddersfield.
The Seagulls were being held at 1-1 until Ulloa put them ahead for the second time in the game in the 76th minute with a classic downward header.
Poyet said: “He scored against Arsenal and played well, he scored at Cardiff but I think the second goal showed why we signed him.
“You just put the corner in there and get up, timing, jump, header, the angle, the power. Everything was there.
“Until then it was the same old story. One shot on target from the opposition, one goal.
“We were on top and couldn’t score the second.
“It was important Leo stood up and the team stood up and made a difference.
“We were able to relax in the last ten minutes for the first time in I don’t know how many months."

Anyone hear what was up with Bridge and Vicente? Was it that they didn't manage to train properly for some reason?
So, 13 points from 15 against mainly top teams and is that 10 goals in 5? The stats show of course no starts in those 5 for Barnes and only one for CMS (but of course after Ashley came on today we scored 3!!) Quality continues to make the difference. We could of course have had 8 today if others had finished as well and/ or we'd had more luck where they had a couple of fabulous defensive clearances
Needs to do something of course now about all those empty seats - not a problem for the next home match hopefully

Proper finishing by a classy player who demonstrates top levels of skill. All the Ulloa doubters have gone a little quieter then. Certainly, if he doesn't get injured and Gus doesn't decide he needs a rest too often to get used to the British motorways etc then he's going to make a significant difference in several more matches this business end of the season. A few months back, Vicente was on his own as the wonder player but he has now been joined by David Lopez and Orlandi. Add in Ulloa, Will showing today he is on the way back, the resolute players at the back, the wonder keeper etc, it's difficult not to feel wildly optimistic.
And we have now lost the least amount games in the Championship. Offically at this moment we are the hardest team to beat in the league.
Now we have the Ulloa threat, teams can't set up against us like before.

TK, some great recent reviews. Ulloa, finding the back of the net yes, but also putting his skills on parade in other areas of the game. David, skill sets that seem to just keep on improving. Orlandi and Bridcutt consistent week in and week out, two quality players.
Upson and Bridge, please God we can keep them. There are maybe one or two more I could name but these guys stand out for me.

We played a very average team and after what was a spectacular, if poorly defended goal,( where was no. 20 again?), by the opposition. We were lucky to get a very suspect decision by someone, (anyone know where that came from?), regarding the corner from which the second goal came. They fell apart after that.
Having said that no doubting the quality of Leonardo for subsequent goal and those either side if it for that matter. The boy has class.
We were light years better than a very poor Huddersfield side even playing those less than regular in the side. Dicker is, lets face it, no Championship player and it showed even against this opposition.
Got to say that I think Gus got a little lucky today by playing a team that was not our best. Perhaps he is frightened of meeting us next year at Stamford Bridge. I have seldom seen a more blatent application for the Chelsea job than his recent interview when he almost asked for it when Rafa goes.
Three away games and then Palace. That will be, I am certain the game that defines this season. What team will he put out that day? I bet it is nothing like that we saw today.
Assuming he is still here of course! I hope, in the interim, we are looking at the most recent 'ex-Chelsea'manager as a possible alternative should Gus get his wish to move on.

I also have no doubt about the achievements of Gus and the Chairman or the committments they have both made or their obvious ambition.. I am rather in awe of both of them and that which they have achieved.
However, the real world says that when opportunity knocks then those who can progress , (quite rightly in my humble opinion), will take that option and move on. Gus has not been shy, (why would he be), about his ambition to manage in the Premiership and has been very vocal about it recently coincidental to the 'unrest' at Chelsea. He will, should the opportunity arise, no doubt exercise any option to progress. I hope that it will be with the Albion but would you blame him if he was offered the Chelsea job?
I made a rather flippant remark inferring that he would not like to meet us in the Premiership but it was just that, an aside. I know he is fully committed to the Albion presently.
However, getting back to 'reality checks', I am assuming that Mr Bloom has contingency plans should Gus actually decide to leave for any reason and I am suggesting that Roberto di Matteo would be a 'realistic' option. Why not consider such' contingencies' sooner rather than later? Do we want a lesser manager than Mr Poyet should a vacancy occur? I think not. Please note no capital letters required to try and make my points.

Right, this is the real deal. The more success that Gus achieves for us the more likely it will be that he moves on to greater things. But whoever takes over his mantle will inherit a team, a club and institution that will have the application of the best potential managers available to take over the reins. Having said that I believe that Gus will not leave us until he has achieved the goal that he has set himself. He believes and I believe that time is now. Right, Gus and Chelsea.
Gus wants to manage Chelski. So what. We know. It's ambition. He isn't from Brighton, his tears are not the product of the acrid smoke from the Archerand and Bellotti bonfire. His hypothetical ashes are not cemented into the foundations of toys R us and his loyalty is probably as questionable as the thousands who leave the game before or at the final whistle without giving the team a suitable ovation (when they deserve it, like today). Many valid reasons for those who seek an early exit, i know; getting home to the family etc. Well i guess Gus has some pretty valid reasons too and frankly it would be nice if the masses were a little more committed but i do thank you for the income and as for Gus, i appreciate your honesty.
The Chelsea thing is not happening any time soon, however much the media goes on about it (and the wums). WHY? well ladies and gentlemen consider this...
Gus is unproven, no Premier experience outside of a Spurs side-car and i do believe that a similar scenario with another Chelsea legend was prematurely ended (despite some 'minor' cup success and a bit more top level experience) earlier this season leading to the current 'interim' fiasco. Now i'm not a betting man but i am sure that Abramovich has not taken to wearing a 'bring back the Commies' and relieve me of my infinite wealth t-shirt' and despite his possibly over inflated ego; he is unlikely to repeat his mistake and bow to the nostalgia streaked handkerchiefs of the keep the blue (red???) flag brigade; otherwise fat Raffa would be out of there already.
So... If we get promoted this season boys and girls; or next and Gus does a splendid job of getting us there and keeping us there, then this unholy (actually as you may now agree, if you had not before, this scenario is full of holes) scenario may have a little more credence. If we don't get there this season or next, then Gus and i would hazard a guess at our good selves, would have to reconsider our options.
So, in conclusion... Gus 2 Chelsea = Brighton 2 Premiership or bust. Not quite rocket science but the equation is pretty simple and has to be balanced...

More importantly what does Abramovich want? I don't think his main target is in winning the Premiership. He wants European glory and has a history of appointing Managers who are experienced in that arena,
If he did suddenly decide to appoint another Manger with previous links to Chelsea - and that's probably unlikey given the experience he had with Di Matteo - what about Steve Clarke at West Brom? He has better credentials than Gus

Gus’ theory of football evolution has seen the weaker elements of the Albion squad displaced by those who are more capable of turning this theory into scientific fact. Leonardo Ulloa is the man who has finally provided a telling end product to all the midfield domination that was, until his arrival, wasted by the profligate Craig Mackail Smith. I know Macca is a fans favourite but for all his tireless and self-less running he simply has failed to deliver on so many occasions.
Yesterday against Huddersfield we saw what we had been missing. Two excellent headers and a composed rounding of the keeper to roll the ball into an empty net to complete the most distinguished of hat-tricks, a first for the Amex and hopefully the first of many in an Albion shirt for Leo.
As is usual in home games Albion quickly assumed control of the game but for all this dominance chances were at a premium until the 20th minute when Ulloa arrived ahead of his marker at the near post to power Orlandi’s pinpoint cross into the net past the hapless Terriers keeper. Hudderfield had offered nothing in an attacking sense and had Orlandi converted a simple one on one chance from a cleverly taken quick free kick only minutes after the opening goal the floodgates may have opened. In fairness to Orlandi only a fine save by Smithies denied on this occasion but he seems incapable of converting chances that have to be buried, the harder the chance that comes his way the more likely he is to score. On 42 minutes this miss looked as though it was going to prove costly as with their first attempt on goal Huddersfield equalised through a fine finish from ex-Everton man James Vaughan after Albion failed to clear their lines from a hopeful long ball into the box. Half-time 1-1 and I feared another frustrating 90 minutes at the Amex was inevitable.
The second half saw Albion again assume ascendancy and the chances began to flow. Twice David Lopez was denied by goal-line clearances and second half sub Ashley Barnes, on for the struggling Gary Dicker, wasted a guilt edged chance putting a free header from 7 yards tamely over the bar.
The subdued home support groaned en masse and appeared to be resigned to another 2 home points dropped. The next five minutes, however, changed all that. From a hotly disputed (ok, clearly incorrect) corner Ulloa rose and despite leaning away from goal planted an exquisite header into the corner of the net. Huddersfield were furious and with their composure gone two minutes a long ball from Calderon was collected by Ulloa on the edge of the box and as the keeper committed himself to his right the forward rolled the ball to the left and passed the ball home. The previously subdued atmosphere was replaced with raucous and unrestrained joy. We had a new hero. We were still celebrating and singing his name when another long ball found Mackail Smith who appeared to be tripped (fell over) by the right back and the referee, getting into the spirit of these ebullient moments, pointed to the spot. Spanish Dave stepped up and we knew he wasn’t going to miss. How nice it is to at last believe that the award of a penalty is not just another addition to the missed chances total rather than the goal tally.
This time last season we sat in a similar position in the table but, in truth, it didn’t seem warranted then. It does now. Of course we have tough obstacles to overcome between now and the beginning of May but with a goalscorer in your team and a belief in the system Gus has painstakingly crafted we really could be looking at a tumultuous few months and a very rosy long-term future. Only one worry persists for me personally at this time.
At a Seagulls Over London meeting Gus attended during the 2010-11 League One title-winning season, he stated when asked that he wouldn't return to Stamford Bridge in an assistant-manager capacity....with ONE exception....if the Special One was boss and wanted him aboard.
Now 2 years of successful managerial experience have been accrued since then and there's nothing specifically there to suggest that Mourinho would select Gus as a no.2 even if he did return there, but it adds a nagging worry to the equation.
Let's hope nothing along those lines materialises!

Or did keeper make it easy for him? If it was the drop shoulder the goal was absolute class... Great work by Gus to sub him as well, giving him level more confidence with the standing ovation..
A fantastic performance by Ulloa, only surpassed by David and closely pressed by Orlandi.

Second it was a penalty. It was right in front of my seat. The defender stetching for the ball missed and clipped Mackail-Smith's ankle inside the box

Can anybody shed some light on what was occurring in the north stand in the first half. Would be better if stewards were allowed to sit down and fill some empty seats there seemed enough to fill an entire corner. Bizarre .
