Ulloa: My best is yet to come for Albion

Leo Ulloa gets a hug from Gus Poyet Leo Ulloa gets a hug from Gus Poyet

LEO Ulloa reckons he can get better and better for Albion after writing himself into the record books as the first player ever to score a hat-trick at The Amex.

The £2 million Argentinian target man, signed from Spanish club Almeria in January, has already bagged five goals in seven games following his treble in the 4-1 win against Huddersfield.

Ulloa said: “I have always believed that my skills are suited to English and Italian football. Now I am seeing that is right and that I can fit in here very well. There are things I need to fix, for example whether or not the referees are awarding me fouls, but of course I am happy. The best part of the season is coming and I cannot wait.

“I’m very pleased, because the team is winning, and this hat-trick is very special for me because it is my first for Brighton and the atmosphere at The Amex is unbelievable.

“It makes it different. I scored two for Almeria but the last one was a year ago. The only thing I want now is to keep going.”

Ulloa’s exploits have given manager Gus Poyet a headache for tomorrow night’s trip to Bristol City.

Poyet revealed: “I had in mind not to start him on Tuesday and he's scored three. Now I’ve got a problem. How can you leave a hat-trick hero on the bench?”

Liam Bridcutt returns from suspension for the visit to Ashton Gate and Wayne Bridge (hamstring) and Vicente (fatigue) could be back in contention after missing Albion's third win on the trot against Huddersfield.

Poyet said: “Bridgey is going to be close. If there are any doubts I’ll keep him for Bolton (Saturday). Vicente could be fit for Tuesday, no doubt.”

Sorry to all if offends for just bringing up, especially to Ulloa. I have only seen the Brighton goals from highlights on 'the football league show' so only from one camera angle. Even slowing to 'slow moton', The first goal, appears to miss Ulloa's head and then end up as being an own goal. If I can be proved wrong then please do so as would love that the Albion have the first 'legitimate' hat trick at the Amex

It's an academic debate as he has been officially credited with the goal, thus the hat trick stands.

Dead right! Let's not waste time splitting hairs on this one.

One thing of interest is Ulloa's mention of refs. At he last home game, the ref penalised him a great deal for perceived jumping into his opponent (remember the sign language "eyes on the ball" moment). Last weekend, the ref didn't blow up at all. It may be that Ulloa is an incredibly quick learner, but I think it's more likely that this may be one of those peculiaraties that some refs will take action on, while others don't see it as an issue.

Am delighted for El Ciclón to make this bit of history. It made for an exhilarating climax to the game and a deserved victory that further enhances our goal-difference advantage over closest rivals M'boro.

Boro could 'only' manage a single goal win vs Cardiff so we are as good as an extra point clear of them with our game still in hand.

One win and two draws from these three consecutive away fixtures would ensure us of 6th going into the Palace affair, as Barnsley is our game-in-hand. However, I think it would be advisable to bag at least 7 points to minimise Crippled Phallus's chances of vein able to send us out of the places....a moot point perhaps, seeing as we are going to batter them with a Cyclone and a Dagger!

Briiiiiiighton - I was at the game and said exactly the same thing at the time to family/friends around me but no one agreed with me. I was convinced it was an o.g. but pleased for Ulloa that he's been credited with the goal...

So, Vicente might return after missing the last two games through "FATIGUE". Great stuff, how understanding are his employers !!! Plays 90 minutes v Blackburn. Spends the evening after the game down the Casino and then is so exhausted he has to miss out the next two games. He might be a star but aren't we being a little too tolerant here ? He's a pro footballer and should be putting in a shift like the rest.
Delighted for Ulloa. How we have missed having a proper centre forward all season. Strength, arial ability, power to hold off defenders and calmness on the ball to dribble around goalkeepers and roll it into the net. Fantastic and long may it continue. Here's hoping for a repeat dose on Tuesday, either with or without Prima Donna Vicente

looked at it on freeze frame and he appears to get a touch as does the defender. Any touch good enough though surely?

Fatigue is a proper medical condition - you are confusing it with 'being tired'.

Which Casino did you actually see him in?

fratsomrover; if you can wake up this sunny Monday morning and all you can think of doing is writing a cynical sarcastic rant attacking Vicente, you need to have your head examined.

So what you are saying is, we are too tolerant and we should all go down to the Amex handing out Prima Donna Vicente flyers and make a big fuss about the meaning of FATIGUE?

Fratsomrover my question to you is, why?

As a Brighton supporter why would you take this cheap shot at Vicente.
Why are you not just pleased to see him as and when Gus feels it right to use him.
We are in the top six on merit, why single out any player for a slap down.

I noticed Captain Haddock that we got the 'big' victory you called for last week.
When we got to 75 minutes and the score was still 1 - 1 I thought here we go again yet anoher dominant performance and nothing much to show for it. So pleased my concerns proved unfounded.
As you say improving our goal difference potentially very beneficial and could prove all important in a couple of months time.
I though Lopez was excellent and unlucky with the two goal-line clearances when he had beaten the GK.
I really trust the club get him signed up for next season since he will be an asset regadless of which division we are in.
Heartening to see Ulloa scoring from crosses. It seems sometime since we had a player capable of winning the ball in the air in the opposition's penalty box.
Looks as if Bridge will still be out tomorrow and I suspect Vicente will be o the bench. The only change I anticipate is Bridcutt for Dicker with the latter also being on the bench.

It's not a cheap shot !! Vicente is the most skillful player we have had here in ages. I'd like to see him play every game. He is a professional footballer and he has played one 90 minute game this season because of one reason or another. That's not much of a return for the money we are paying him.
That's my opinion. I dont think it good policy to give two year contracts to players who only play 2,3 or 4 games a season.

You must have noticed that he is a bit fragile though?
Resting him when he is showing signs of fatigue is so that we might get a few more games out of him than if we play him until he breaks down completely.
The way you've phrased your criticism reads that you think he is just lazy. That's a cheap shot at a player who has had fitness problems.

Completely agree with Leo and the headline of this article. It certainly is

Completely disagree of course that even before the match Gus could contemplate this:

Poyet revealed: “I had in mind not to start him on Tuesday and he's scored three. Now I’ve got a problem. How can you leave a hat-trick hero on the bench?”

Re Vicente - yep, by far our best player so starting should always be the case - he can always come off at half time. My money's all on red then!!

Hopefully good luck with Wayne and his hamstring. I reckon we must be experta with that part of the leg now :-)
