Poyet to dip into loan market

Craig Mackail-Smith is likely to miss the rest of the season Craig Mackail-Smith is likely to miss the rest of the season

Albion will launch a search for a loan striker today after losing top scorer Craig Mackail-Smith for the rest of the season.

He suffered a suspected ruptured Achilles in last night’s 0-0 draw at Bristol City.

It leaves the promotion-chasing Seagulls short of firepower, with Will Hoskins already out for the rest of the season with serious knee damage.

Mackail-Smith collapsed at the end of the first half after losing his footing and had to be helped off by two of the medical staff. Poyet said: “It could be a serious Achilles injury. I think he could be three months so this season is probably over. The doctor knows and he is 99.9% sure he is out for the rest of the season.

“It changes things completely. I like to have four strikers at least. We had three and now we’ve got two. I absolutely hate the loan market but I am not going to be so naive not to use it.

“We need to be lucky. We can’t pay fortunes so it will depend on help from another club as well. I am looking anywhere. We have got two or three. Maybe a month ago they were available but things change. Now we need to check and sort it out as soon as possible.”

Mackail-Smith started instead of Leo Ulloa, who scored a hat-trick against Huddersfield on Saturday. Poyet had planned to play Ashley Barnes but he went down with illness earlier in the day. Poyet added: I thought it was a good game for Macca. He is our top scorer and I wanted to use him and make sure Leo is fit for the rest of the season, because he has just been on the limit. He is paying the price for arriving to England halfway through the season without playing too many games.

“I know it’s contradictory, because he scored three the other day, but these are decisions I have to make and I was not afraid of making sure we have got Leo for the rest of the season.”

Going to be hard to find a player who is happy to play second fiddle to Ulloa that is good enough to step up when needed. Good luck Gus!

I think Gus has a pretty tough job to do between now and Saturday.

He has got to have the boys mentally ready for Saturday.. No talk of fatigue or illness and no feeling a little hard done by in terms of a few things that have not gone to plan this week.

We are Brighton and we will win has to be the order of the coming days.

Bolton have won their last 4 and not lost in 6 and so Saturday is going to be a real test of both ability and character. With both Palace due at the Amex and an inform Forest waiting for us at their place we must be right both mentally and physically.

Here's to a point last night and a quick move onwards and upwards for Saturday.

I hear he is sick and tired of his knockers.
However, a private operation soon will, hopefully, reduce them.

Firstly, let's hope injury to CMS isn't as bad as thought and he's back soon.

Secondly, let's make sure his replacement is a lot better than a few we've signed previously!

Lets face it Dobbie was rubbish for us, so glad to see back of, would rather see one of our youngsters play.
If we do get a loan striker, I hope it is a young premiership player rather than some has been.

Not really seeing as the saving in his wages has allowed us to go and get Upson (and Ulloa?). Simple fact is he was on good wages and doing nothing on the pitch and Palace were (maybe the only club) willing to pay his wages

Still think we should give the young lads a chance to step up , sometimes all it takes is a chance.. I know its the Championship and we need quality but surely the DS is there to support the First team or whats the point in developing them and paying their wages ..its for exactly situations like these ... Barker and Toby at least deserve a chance or why are we keeping them in the squad ? GG

Because Barker is currently ahead of him in the pecking order as shown last night by the bench.

VegasSeagull says...
2:04pm Wed 6 Mar 13

Poyet made the point that Ulloa is suffering from the fact that he joined us halfway thru the season without playing many games, I guess the same will apply to a loanee.

If a older fringe player from the prem comes in he will probably not played many games. If a youngster comes in then likewise played few games if any.

My option would be to go for a young lad as back up to Barnes and Ulloa but that would mean when Ulloa is rested Vicente plays.
Barnes can play ten matches on the run, Ulloa and Vicente can't, not this season. A young quick glory hungry striker from the prem would be my choice.

Check out Adorjan at Liverpool, by all written accounts a star in waiting.

Okay, which just makes me wonder why Gus didn't stick him on last night if Ulloa was knackered... At least he would have been fresh and keen to produce something.

Seeing how long it took to find a striker like Ulloa I cannot see how Gus can rustle another one up in a week or two.

I hope I am wrong and Gus weaves his magic but being realistic why not look at the DS squad?
Surely they have to play at some time or other or ,as other posters have stated, whats the point?
Maybe his good mate Zola can give him some advice on the loan market.

RedKen.
There are times when what appears to be a good opportunity arrives, be it in your own work life, family life or a chance for the team you support, I happen to think this lad is a opportunity for Brighton.

Some weeks back, when I was calling for Poyet to sign two strikers and not one, I went thru all the prem clubs development squads, looking to see if there was a potential gem out there, Adorjan stood out as one.

This lad has a current transfer maket value in the region of 800k, those that know a lot more than you or I rate him highly. Yep I would like to see him play in the stripes, it won't be long before this kid has a few extra noughts added to his sale price.

Did you check him out or did you just decide to post what you think is a clever post about me.

This is a discussion forum, a place where opinions and views are posted, why don't you join in and offer your thoughts on the team rather than on me.

I'm trying to evaluate today just how big a blow the loss of CMS is to us.

On one hand, he wasn't exactly setting the world alight. In fact, his last goal came on January 1. On the other, he gave Gus the option of resting Ulloa and have somebody else lead the line. He was also a more than useful guy to bring on when you're chasing a game.

Right now, with both CMS and Hoskins out for the season, his only other option is everybody's favourite Ashley Barnes. And Gus has seemed reluctant recently to play him as an out-and-out striker.

When we signed Buckley, we were told he could play as a wide man or a striker. But he's been well below his best in recent matches and the evidence suggests that like the great Kauto Star, he runs better when fresh.

Clearly, Gus doesn't think Toby or Barker are up to this level, otherwise they'd have been given a chance by now.

The forgotten man in all this is LuaLua, who never seems to get a start, no matter who is injured or who is out of form. I don't know whether this is down to fitness, attitude or how he performs in training.

Maybe he could be our dark horse on the run-in because his pace frightens defenders and he can score the odd goal?

fratsomrover says...
3:03pm Wed 6 Mar 13

On a more serious note, if we could get Vicente back into the team, he would in alongside Ulloa pretty well.
Also I wouldn't discount Orlandi as he has proved against Cardiff, Derby and Newcastle he can put a chance away.

Signing a young loanee from a prem club is fine but does have strings attached.

Usually there is an agreement that they are guaranteed fist team football to get the best out of them and not sit on the bench.
Here lies the problem.
Would Gus drop Ulloa in favour of an untried entity or would he have to play two strikers, don´t think so.
I would prefer an older experienced warhorse who can mix it up a bit and play when needed.

Hannover my thinking is, When Ulloa plays so does Vicente, when Ulloa has to be rested then Vicente rests too, this is probabaly just a single game.

Both resting in comes Barnes with young loanee. The loanee as the striker and Barnes in the hole.

The young loanee could also be used when Ulloa is playing along with Vicente as Vicente doesn't need to playing 90 minutes.

SMF20, if we do go for the, 'older experienced player,' in plain speak, a guy not getting match time and has been around for a good few years, would we not run the risk of that player also getting injured.

Who ever comes in must be match fit right from the get go, older and available players just don't get much match time at the present club.

A capable young player at least has that young player fitness right now. Ulloa is young but even he is feeling the pains of playing day in and day out.

Sadly Vicente as brilliant as he can be is no banker.

Hannover I get your point but I would suggest that finding, 'like for like cover,' is probably impossible.

Like for like, a player currently playing as a striker on a regular basis.
Match fit, with a scoring record and available to go out on loan. Who would let a player as I have described go out on loan.

Could we go for two loan deals, two older and available players?.

I am sure that TB will once again dig deep
Next year the minimum a prem club will receive is 60.1 mill.in other words the best year ever to go up and as we know he likes a punt.

Does anyone know whether during the loan period it is possible to bring in overseas players?
