Calde happy to keep bid on course

Inigo Calderon admits he felt sorry for the fans who paid to watch last night’s bore draw at Ashton Gate.

But the Albion left-back was happy with a clean sheet and another point towards the play-off push.

The Seagulls defended strongly to draw 0-0 against a City side aiming for their fifth successive home win.

Calderon said: “I think the main thing is when you realise you can’t win, it is important you get a point.

“We can’t learn too much from this game. I feel sorry for the fans because it wasn’t pretty to watch but it’s a football game, you have to play and get as many points as you can.”

Albion struggled to get their passing game going.

Calderon added: “We realised quite late we couldn’t play how we like to play. It took us maybe all the first half to realise that, then we started to go more long and direct.

“They didn’t look like they were bottom of the table. They played quite well so it was fair for both teams.”

Bristol City boss Sean O’Driscoll said: “A clean sheet against a difficult team is a positive for us.”

Albion face two more away games, at Bolton and Barnsley, in the coming week.

Calderon added: “Every game is different. You can’t say those games will be the same. Bolton will be difficult but the key thing now is to rest and recover because there are too many players with small problems.”

Spot on Calde, we improved our position by 1 point last night. That's got to be good so let's stay positive. A better performance on Saturday no doubt.

7 goaless draws and 4 wins will see us in the playoffs. Scrape through to the Prem against the odds and have the extra money to invest in the summer.

Chelsea didn't become European Champions by playing well.

On the previous thread 'CMS out for the rest of the season' it was mentioned that the return of Liam our defence to midfield to forward play had slowed a bit. Could be a good point inasmuch that Liam is schooled in Gus's old style of a cautious approach. Whereas the combo of Hammond, Spanish Dave and Orlandi have adopted a more free spirit attitude in going forward to link with the forward(s). Hence the performance put in against Huddersfield with the absence of Liam. Now, I am in no way knocking Liam but it does leave food for thought.

Good comments. Funny how some times losing a player for what ever reason can sometimes work for you.Ironic that cms now out when hoskins could had more of a lookin .

Probably right Far gull, everyone seems to have had this virus and Gus said a few training days were abandoned due to frozen pitches the other week, a long trip to Bristol against an in form team fighting for their lives was always going to be tough.

I guess the strategy was to go up there and not lose, but get CMS to work them hard and pinch a winner.

On paper the strategy was probably right for this away game, though with CMS getting injured, it sort of threw this out the window and went to all hands on deck.

From what it sounded like on the radio he was in on goal for a scoring chance when he went down.

Inigo is an honest pro and is honest in his comments. It did sound a dire game and looking back through loads of other match reports from the football league, I have never read an account where a team failed to have one shot at the opposition's goal. That is a dire statistic and not one you can feel proud of, irrespective of the state of the pitch. Let's hope normal service is resumed on Saturday and visiting fans have something to shout about. Grateful for the point maybe, but I still feel it was a chance missed to put daylight between us and the chasing pack. They are bottom of the table for a reason. We shouldn't forget that and three points had to be there for the taking if we wish to get into the play-offs come May.

It's important not to confuse how they were playing early in the season - which placed them at the bottom - with how they are playing now. Current form is ALL that matters in these games. But let us not forget a Croydon team lost there 4-1 at the beginning of the season :-)

Poor us!! Making excuses up front is a bad route for us to go I reckon. Gus is often too good at it

I don't think that there is any point in looking for excuses to explain our performance against City, fact is we didn't play well and we got a point, end of.

The amazing thing about tuesday, apart from not having a single shot, is that none of the midfield or those we look to to score, had a good match. So many players all hitting a bum note on the same night. I guess we should be thankful that our defense played well.

Oldscrote is right, today's City is not the one that started the season, if their season started as it is finishing they would be in the top ten or so position, maybe even higher.
