CMS to undergo operation

Craig Mackail-Smith leaves the action Craig Mackail-Smith leaves the action

Craig Mackail-Smith has been booked in for surgery – and told he can be back for pre-season.

Albion’s top scorer left Tuesday’s 0-0 draw at Bristol City with a ruptured Achilles.

He was assessed today and will have an operation on Monday.

Albion boss Gus Poyet and his off-field team discussed their options this morning.

They are studying the loan market in the hunt for a replacement.

Poyet said tonight he is expecting Mackail-Smith back “for pre-season, for sure,”

He added: “It’s a big blow to lose him.”

Real shame. He has kept really fit up until now.

Can't see the loan idea working out.

Couldn't agree more. Despite a lack of goals in recent games Macca is a vital part of our squad and I look forward to seeing him back next season, whichever division we're in.

Good if a loan move becomes possible, but I also think it's an opportunity to play AB in his proper position as a striker. We've plenty of others to occupy the midfield positions.

Cannot rely on Barnes to fill an out and out strikers role, just not good enough imo. Does ok coming a bit deeper, but don't see him as a top end Championship forward, let alone the Premiership.

I think Barnes will be a better partner for Ulloa than CMS.
Not knocking CMS, and hope he returns raring to go for next season in the Prem.

I totally agree with that. Sad to see any player go out injured, but I think I'd miss Barnes more so than CMS, (per last night for example).

Whether Barnes is the right or wrong players matters not when considering our shortage of fit strikers.
We are one certainlly, and possibly two, strikers short and that is a problem no matter what one thinks of Barnes.

One or two loan deals has to be the answer and one we can't ignore or pretend we don't need. Poyet needed to rest Ulloa but had to play him for 45 minutes. If he needed resting before the game he certainly does after it.
Can we honestly say that we can keep our promotion run going with just Ulloa and Barnes, God forbid a further injury or red card for one of them.

We could look to our development players but Barker was on the bench and Gus chose to send Ulloa out, even tho he wanted to rest him, that must tell us something.

If no one comes in before saturday then I guess Orlandi could play further forward. Lua Lua could pose a threat but can he last 90 minutes, I doubt it. Obviously Vicente might work out well playing further forward but again, not for 90 minutes on a run of three or four matches, maybe not even two in a row.

I am gutted for CMS and gutted for the team. The threat posed by CMS may not have been his recent goal scoring but defenders knew that they had to deal with him and his pace. His workrate was second to none and will be missed.

Our season must not fall apart at the final hurdle so loans have to be made and we can worry about the cost at the end of the season.

Get well soon Craig.

VegasSeagull I remember yor call around the January window for two strikers to be signed to cover the type of scenario that has now occurred and that was BEFORE Dobbie was loaned to Palace.
I think we should sign 2 strikers now on loan effectively to replace CMS and Hosko. If we did we would have the four strikers Poyet says he likes to have. We would have the players to cover any further injuries or Suspensions - after all Barnes has only just come back from suspension and is now ill.
In practical terms we could look to sign an experienced player and also a young premiership squad member.
We need to recruit them quickly since the loan window closes in a couple of weeks. Incidently is recalling Dobbie an option if there were no other solution ?

I noticed on the Poyet dipping into the Loan market thread that a number of posters were wary of our signing a fringe player from a premiership club since they might not be fully fit.
Wasn't that the situation with Upson ?
He has certainly brought something to the squad and yes I appreciate it different for a CB than a striker.

What's Bobby Zamora up to these days?
He hasn't been playing for QPR recently. Is he injured or out of favour? He would more than bust a gut for the Albion.

Zamora is out injured.

Recall for Dobbie, I really don't think that's possible, there is a sale in principal agreed and in place.
For all intent and purposes he has already gone off the books.

Cant see the loan striker idea working when Gus himself states that any player coming in needs time to adapt to our style of play!

With games running out why not just "try" one of the DS strikers that have been already playing "our style of play" for the last 2/3 years.. They must be desperate for a chance to show what they can do ... we know Toby is skillful and quick and George is a good finisher ... It also saves having to pay yet another players wages !

Can't see Gus going for this option as he doesn't seem to trust the DS players ..shame , sometimes a sniff of a chance is all a young player needs to shine... GG

Good post Vegas. CMS is a vital part of our squad and I too wish him a speedy recovery. Get well soon CMS, we'll need you next season for sure...

Toby has looked good whenever I have seen him, strong, quick and skilful. I think Gus must give him a chnace surely.

In recent matches we have seen JFC and Barker on the bench, Toby has not made it.
I can't see, for the run in, Toby filling the gap left by Hoskins and now CMS.
