Barnes on FA charge
4:36pm Wednesday 13th March 2013 in Sport By Brian Owen
Ashley Barnes is dismissed at The Reebok
Ashley Barnes is facing the possibility of an extended ban for his red card at Bolton.
The FA have charged Albion’s striker with violent conduct worthy of a longer ban than the usual three matches.
Barnes was shown a straight red card for trying to trip referee Nigel Miller just seconds from full-time.
He received an automatic three-match ban, plus an extra game as it was his second dismissal of the season.
The FA believe his “violent conduct towards the end of the game constituted an offence whereby the standard punishment that would otherwise apply was clearly insufficient.”
Barnes has until 6pm tomorrow to respond to the charge.
He began his suspension by missing last night’s 1-0 defeat to Barnsley.

And so he should be. Idiot!

What can you say, his problem is that hes petulant ,and arrogent and that just doesent help his cause as a footballer, when things dont go his way..if this ban that the fa will give him doesnt teach him, then hes no good to brighton anymore.. sad but true.

In Div 1 Murray was always told to get 20 goals to prove he was a striker and to keep his place in the side. Barnes has been able to get away with bad behaviour, poor performances, missed chances and penalties, but always seems to be guaranteed a place.
Who are the winners in all of this?
a) Barnes b) Albion c) Palace?

Only an Albion website can constantly turn a story - any story - into one about a grumpy ex-player who wanted out. I still prefer Ulloa to GM.
In hindsight Palace's resurgence at the beginning of the season - after a disastrous start of 4 defeats - was almost solely due to Murray's goals. IMHO without him they would be a mid-table side at most, and Albion would have had a much better chance of the play-offs.
It's a shame we let him go to a rival championship side - which compounds our misery. Personally, I don't think he would have scored half the goals he has got this season in Albion's system of play, and i too am delighted so far with Ulloa..

Pity Ash is not as good as Beckham.
I doubt if we will see him again for a while if at all this season.

Barnes' infamous 'trip' reminded me of Beckham's gentle kick out that got him sent off in the World Cup match v Argentina in 1998.

Can't even begin to to think of him in same sentance as Becks.

I agree that he wouldn't have scored anywhere near that amount in our system and Ulloa looks like he could be brilliant in our style/system, scoring goals too.
However, I think Palace's resurgence may have been more down to having a £12m winger winning penalties and putting endless crosses into the box. If they had had Kevin Phillips playing all season (which because of age wouldn't have been possible anyway), they would probably be top and promoted by now.
Much prefer Ulloa to the lazy Murray and that won't change whatever happens on Sunday or the rest of the season.
On the actual story, I am interested to see what Brighton eventually say about this. The video footage was inconclusive but the club's silence on the matter possibly suggests they know a bit more. If he did it, he should be punished by the FA and the club. I don't necessarily think it should be the end of his Brighton career though. That is up to Gus. We will see.

Returning to the actual story, may I be the voice of reason here? However stupid Barnes may have been, however long the ban, we still need him back for our sakes for as many more games as we can this season. We just don't have enough players otherwise.

Gazza by the sea wrote:You never know. It takes a stroke of fortune (perceived as good OR bad) to force the manager's hand and sometimes uncover an unexpected benefit as a result. For example, we may end up playing LuaLua upfront or Buckley in the central strikers roll and discover a winning formula that includes these guys. Buckley considers himself foremost a striker anyway and LuaLua impressed during a stint in that role in the latter part of one game this season (I forget the opposition).
The ban may just be the reason we make the play-offs........
Alternatively, perhaps Barker or Toby will get another shot upfront and manage to make an impressionl, or JFC from midfield in the absence of Vicente??

Gus and the club know how these charges usually play out and I now expect they will acknowledge a damage limiting acceptance of the charges in view of Ashley's tempermental reaction to being sent off.
