Poyet blasts ref appointment

Craig Pawson sends off Romain Vincelot on his previous visit to The Amex Craig Pawson sends off Romain Vincelot on his previous visit to The Amex

Referee Craig Pawson's appointment for Sunday's derby against Crystal Palace has been branded "embarrassing" by Albion manager Gus Poyet.

The Argus revealed earlier this week the controversial choice of Premier League newcomer Pawson.

He sent off Seagulls pair Ashley Barnes and Romain Vincelot early on against Burnley at The Amex last season and also dismissed Palace chief Ian Holloway when he was in charge of Blackpool.

Poyet said: "If it's not looked at it's embarrassing. If they think it's the right person to put in this kind of game it's up to them. For me it's still embarrassing.

"And if I was a director or the owner of this football club I would be very disappointed with them. I was expecting the biggest Premier League manager (referee) available to come to this game."

Look, he's a qualified referee from the FA. He may have had an absolute shocker against Burnley, but it doesn't really matter who the ref is and we should forget about it.

What really matters is three points. A Murray own goal in the 91st minute will do nicely.

Way to go Gus, p off the ref before he even blows his whistle, that should endear him to our cause.

Silly and disappointing comments from Gus. Clubs should not be dictating as to what referees they should get for matches. If he sent two Brighton players off against Burnley he did it for a reason - the Barnes one was fully justified and hardly anyone saw the Vincelot offence. I cannot recollect either red card being appealed? Referees that have had run-ins with Holloway are numerous so cannot give too much credence to that issue. Unless the referee has a history in this fixture (i.e. Ron Challis from the 70s) I cannot see why the appointment should cause any problem. Making provocative comments such as this can ony inflame the fans and make a very difficult match for the referee even more so.

Could not agree more, the appointment is just another example of the contempt that the authorities have for the Albion and this move also gives Mr Pawson a no win situation every decision he makes will be under intense scrutiny. The concerted abuse that he had to withstand after Burnley at the Amex was extreme but as a fan I feel it was well deserved at the time although this may be one of the reasons we are being treated the way we are!!!

He's certainly getting his excuses in early for this game. Even if many supporters will be happy with another top ten finish, I truly believe that TB, Barber and co won't be. Ok, injuries and suspensions have hit us hard at the business end of the season, but tbh, stubbornly sticking to one style based on ponderous build up play, hardly ever picking the same starting eleven (even after a win) and a lack of tactical know-how to be able to change a game are what's cost us over the season.

The issue with Pawson wasn't so much the Albion sendings off, it was the fact that he completely ignored the Burnley player putting his rounds round Barnes throat directly in front of him. Clearest case of a red card I've ever seen - but not for Pawson with his well known bias towards northrn clubs.

Maybe his comments are designed to put pressure on the ref.

If we can stop the Palace wingers feeding GM then he'll be impotent.

Although it won't help, I can see Poyet's point. Big game, bound to be tasty, we probably need a decent referee (with no history!) who is able to see everything - Pawson doesn't yet fit that bill.

WiseOldSeagull says...

We have not been consistent enough so far this season regardless of injuries, missed penalties, dominated play, and poor refereeing decisions. The simple fact is that if we had had consistent goalscorers in the side from the getgo we would be comfortably in the playoffs if not in a promotion spot.

After 30 odd games we haven't been good enough. We need to win 6 of the last 9 games to stand a chance and that means clinical in front of goal. No one can say that we deserve to be in the premier league with the amount of goalscoring opportunities we have wasted.

A remarkable turn of goalscoring form in the remaining games is the only way we will stand a chance. We will always create so there is hope.

Rumor has it that they have asked Ashley Barnes to stand in the tunnel as the teams emerge, trip the ref, and get the 4th official on as a sub Ref in place of Pawson.

Sounds like a plan !

Im sure Ashley will be ready to serve when called upon.

Sounds like a good plan to me.
Barnes might be better as one of the flag waving ladies. He can fall over spectacularly like he does when he makes a bad tackle!

Rather than continuing to cram the midfield, as has been shown not to work this season, i'd rather see us play 4-4-2 against Palarse.

Lets get Lua Lua and Buckley in the wide poistions with Orlandi and Lopez in the middle. Ulloa and Vicente up front. Yes I know there is no room for Bridcutt but we must start scoring goals otherwise our season is finished. I'd rather it be 5-5 than lose 1-0 in our current fashion.

On the contrary, I think we need to prevent their wingers getting the ball to Murray. I expect Palace have a good go at Brighton in the belief we can't hurt them being short of strikers. We will score on a counter attack is the plan.

On the positve side, Pawson cant send Ash off nor El Abd. On the negative side he can always send Greer off who will need to be careful

I sometimes wonder if Gus thinks about engaging his brain before putting his mouth in gear. Cant believe he's slagging off the ref before the game has even started. Has he ever considered adopting the F.A.'s edict on RESPECT or does he think he's beyond that ?
Guess we cant expect any favours from Mr Pawson then, or maybe Gus is just preparing us for his excuses if we lose.
A really dumb statement to make, puts him on par with Ashley Barnes's action last weekend.

The problem vs Burnley last season wasn't our own sendings off, but the fact three Burnley players should have been sent off in the same game one perhaps debatable, the other two definites). Utter inconsistency shown and he lost control of the game entirely.

To then give him this derby fixture seems unwise to me in the extreme. However the FA, in their infinite wisdom, seem to rate him highly. We'll see.

However, I concede Gus's comments are highly unlikely to help matters.

Still at least usual suspects Adam El Abd and Barnes can't get themselves sent off!!!

By the way, for those saying we need to stop Murray and Zaha, don't forget Bolasie… he has been far more consistent in the second half of the season than Zaha and he tore us apart at Selhurst earlier in the season.

Before doing anything engage brain...

1: Have a thought...
2: Rethink that thought...
3: Turn tongue in mouth 10 times...
4: Ensure brain is still engaged...
5: Open mouth.

Jumping directly to n°5 can lead to problems and make listeners/readers wonder whether stage 4 is even conceivable... Oh well, such is life. Hopefully the idiot that masquerades as Hawley is not an avid Argus reader.

1. No point slagging off the F.A. - it's nothing to do with them; it's the Football League that make the ref appointments to our matches.
2. I'm with Gus on this. Earlier in the week I wrote to the F.L. asking whether before making this app't they had considered a) the volatile nature of this game and b) Craig Pawson's performance at the Amex last year. Though they replied they didn't answer these questions.
3. This match should have had a more experienced official, someone with a cool head who knows how to manage the game rather than quickly going for yellow/red cards. Chris Foy would have been the ideal choice.
4. Nonetheless, I hope Mr Pawson has learnt from last year and has a better game tmrw, following the mantra that the best refs are the ones you hardly notice.
5. However, most importantly, 3pts for us. UTA.

Agree with above comments re: Gus shooting off--we all have enough to say about Fergusson doing this!! The ref is paid to do a job--some in our opinions do a good one and some not. If this ref is qualified to ref a Championship game then Gus cannot pick and choose what ref we have. The ref HAS to officiate at a game at some time and it just happens to be us and we can only trust he does a good and FAIR job. As has been said--even by Sir Alex-- that over a season it all evens itself out--some decisions go for us and some against--that is sport the world over. Lets hope we can get a positive result tomorrow and that our players rise to the occassion and play good, winning football. UTA

Dr Baldhead says...

So do people really into the press conference and said "I want to talk about the appt of the ref"?

He was most likely asked the question about Pawson's appointment by a journo who knew it'd draw a reaction. Gus is noithing if not forthright and gave his view. Result - a headline, criticism of the manager and probably action by the FA. He probably should have "no commented", but we know that isn't his style. He's very open with the media on his views about the game, but unfortunately on this occasion he has been exploited by some hack hoping for a headline.

Finally - the ironic thing is Gus is right on this issue. Yes it's true that no club should be able to dictate which refs get appointed BUT the FA need to show sense too. This game has the potential to become volatile; last year around 30 arrests were made in connection with the fixture and BHA has already emailed fans asking for exemplary behaviour. So the FA appoints a ref who has "history" with Brighton AND Ian Holloway. What a lack of foresight and sensitivity!

I agree with Poyet that the appointment is embarrassing, but as much as I agree with him, I'm against him for saying it. A typical Poyet shrug off the shoulders, and a "pfft what can I do" comment would have been enough. For him to label it embarrassing is another, look at me moment. It's hardly going to do us any favours, when on current form, we need all the help we can get.

With regards Pawson, take off the blue and white specs, I think the only thing he done wrong, was not send off their involved in the Ashley Barnes sending off. They both had to go. He took advice from the 4th official on the first sending off, and had to take action on the words of the 4th official if he was told Vincealot struck an opponent, and I think he was right to send Barnes off, but not right in allowing Burnleys player to stay on.

Even so, I think Pawson himself may have been tempted to lean a little bit towards the Albion tomorrow, or certainly be 100% right on everything, I think most 50-50s would have come our way, but with Poyet making that public statement about his appointment, I can see the referee going against us.

Problem with Poyet is, there is always something he is digging the FA out for. Whether its number of subs (agreed with him), forcing us to play 3 home/away games on the trot (agree with him), months of the year we play the game (interesting view), he always has a lot to say against the powers that be. Personally I have as little time for the FA and Football league as Poyet does, but critising them in every other press conference isn't going to help, and I think Pawsons appointment, is a direct result of Poyets moaning. Someone from the powers that be, is starting to show a grudge against Poyet.

Would be quite an open game with us playing that midfield! Orlandi & Spanish Dave would thrive on the tackles flying in the centre of the park! Not only that, dropping our most influential player in Bridcutt is a masterstroke! Gus must have thought of this! Hey, let's get Brezovan up front so we can use his height to get on the end of the wingers' crosses, really go for it!!! Brilliant! Can't believe this plan hasn't dawned on me before!!!
