Calderon reveals derby wish

Inigo Calderon Inigo Calderon

Inigo Calderon wants future derbies between Albion and Crystal Palace to be friendlier – so he can bring his son to watch.

Albion’s Spanish defender says the atmosphere between rival supporters back home is less fractious than it will be at The Amex tomorrow for Palace’s visit.

Calderon revealed: “Our derby at Alaves was with Real Sociedad, because they were going for promotion to La Liga and we were fighting against relegation.

“But in Spain derbies are different. Before and after the game it’s a bit better, because fans can be together, eat and drink together, go to the stadium together, so I think that’s better.

“I would like to come here in five years’ time with my son and be able to see a game but I don’t think it’s as safe in England, because there’s going to be more police than fans maybe.

“I’d like it to be a football party, because in the end it’s a game. Of course I want to beat them, 5-0 if possible, but only on the pitch, not with problems off the field.”

I'm with Calde here - I know loads of fans love the aggression and hatred that comes with derbies but it leaves me completely cold. Yes, I want us to beat Palace, but then I want us to beat everyone.

Well said Calde, we are in the 21st Century and there is nothing worse than children and families enduring pointless spitting hate overkill from both sets of fans. I know of two friends who have season tickets with their young sons, who have chosen to avoid tomorrow’s game.

Problem is that many without brain cells are attracted to the tribal rivalry of football, and would struggle with the brainpower to understand this argument. The "caveman" mentality will always be around on the "terraces".

Agree Pablo, my guess is a lot of the Brighton fans that sing the tedious stand up if you hate palace have probably never been to Selhurst park. I know a few Palace fans and for them this is a needle match but Charlton is their real derby game.

I refuse to believe it always has to be like this. In the late 70s and early 80s when my father was taking me hooligans, hatred, and aggression seemed to be almost ever present or bubbling beneath the surface. Today things are far better. I will be taking my young son to the game although I am a little apprehensive and will probably leave just before the end. We must refuse to accept that this behaviur is inevitable. I hope like our team our rivalary can become more spanish in nature. Now lets get behind the team tomorrow and beat them out of sight. I'll settle for 1-0.

If you want to remove the hatred from these type of games you have to start at the top.

Bridges should be built between the rival clubs, things such as joint ventures with regard to working in the community. If Brighton money created something in south London that benefitted the local community, and Palace did the same in Brighton, then you can make a start.

If the players from both clubs did joint appearances at fund raisers, another step.

Build a friendship between the clubs, a long standing friendship that wouldn't alter by a change of owners or manager. It would take time but it could be done without removing the edge that a derby match has.

If I teach my son to hate Place he will. If I teach him about the good things that Palace have done for Brighton people he won't grow up hating them. Hate is taught, it is not in our genes.

We have to remember that man Palace fans supported our cause when we lost the Goldstone and signed our petition for a new stadium.

In life there will always be good and evil. There will be people you love and people you frankly dislike, this is normal, this is humanity. There are people you will share you values, beliefs and affiliations with and there will be those who disagree with everything you stand for. The only difference between humans and animals is our understanding, our humanity, our civilisation. We must learn to understand our enemies, our opponents, they may not share our values, but does that mean we should try to destroy each other. We think we are civilised people, decent and reasonable, but we must prove this by our actions, respect everyone, show hospitality, welcome. Only when it is necessary to defend ourselves and those who cannot defend themselves, must we change our tact, with those who choose not to respect us. Generally speaking the game has never been as safe as it is today, some argue it has become too sanitised and much of the emotion and passion has gone from the game, I agree to an extent. There will always be games that have the potential to become volatile, Man U vs Liverpool, Spurs vs Arsenal, Rangers vs Celtic, Roma vs SS Lazio, but sometimes I don't think the FA and Police help themselves. Take tomorrow. The Police have "advised" (told) the club and the FA that we cannot play the game on Saturday at 1500, why not? It will encourage heavy drinking? What do they think will happen for a 1200KO on Sunday? You will get people drinking the same as they would have drunk for a 1500ko, but over a shorter duration and probably no lunch, which will cause MORE problems not less. By taking these measures what are the Police saying, trouble is inevitable, it is to be expected, im afraid to the ignoramus these measures will just exite, exacerbate trouble. A special train for Palace, can we not be trusted, must we be treated like cattle, do the Police regard all football supporters as hooligans? The massive Police presence, public order units, dog units, horses and vans everywhere, to the very element the Police are trying to control, this overt policing is like a red rag to a bull, they revell in it. The Police must be there ofcourse, but they must be much more covert, out of sight, let's let the fire burn out not pour petrol on it! The Palace game must be treated like any other, let fans mix in the restaurants and the pubs, give us a chance to build bridges, let the people heal the wounds of the past, this type of Policing DOES NOT fix the problem!

Barnsley beating Watford 1-0
Hull beating Nottm Forrest 1-0.

As long as Hull beat NF, a draw tomorrow will get us back into 6th.

May these be the full times,

leeds 1- 2 huddersfield FT

Bristol city winning ,this really is a very balanced league.
Who knows what the end of season may bring ,having been down after our recent form results could yet keep us in with a shout. We actually could have been comfortably top two if strikers had put away chances earlier in the season. The fact we now do not have them actually may not be that bad ,who knows , but sure is bizzare league.

Hmmmm, this is the same Calde who correctly pointed out that they don't have away fans in Spain. So it's hard to imagine them doing a lot of eating together and going to the stadium together...

I've never understood the animosity with Palace. I can remember going up there many years ago and there was not a sniff of trouble unlike the Millwall away games.

Anyway Forest won again so they have the momentum. Another season of Championship football next year which is no bad thing. Some changes in personnel no doubt and may be even manager.

The season ticket hot line needs to come up with something better in the way of a seat otherwise I shall not renew and just go match on match.

It seems leics our main rivals for 6 spot forest on fire like Reading last year ,not that i think cardiff will be overtaken.
Bolton and middles temporarily off the pace so a draw to keep us in touch would be ok tommorrow.
Here's hoping palace and our fans behave tommorow and game a credit to both.

Give over, it starts by not pi55ing off the railway bridge at Falmer on to the Brighton fans below.
Or ambushing family supporters at Lewes as they change trains.
Easy to say develop a friendship from a chair in Las Vegas, try smiling through a golden shower and shaking hands with someone who has just pi55ed on you.
Personally, I will never share a post match pint with a Palace fan, even those I know and do drink with at other times.

Top comments Calde. The one game I have not enjoyed at The Amex was the game with Palace last season. Not because of the result, just because there were way too many people who were not interested in watching the match. Hated the away match this season as well for all sorts of non-gootballing reasons. Sad to say I cannot see things improving because of the moronic elements that follow both clubs.

If you want to remove hatred from these games you have to re-write history and re-write the DNA for the average British male!!
