Poyet pledges to bring in a new striker

Leo Ulloa celebrates after scoring the second of his two goals against Crystal Palace Leo Ulloa celebrates after scoring the second of his two goals against Crystal Palace

Gus Poyet has pledged Albion will have another striker to assist their promotion challenge before their next match.

The loan transfer window shuts on March 28, two days before the Seagulls visit play-off rivals Nottingham Forest.

In-form Leo Ulloa is the only recognised senior forward available to Poyet, due to injuries and suspension, so Albion will sign somebody even though the search has proved difficult so far.

Poyet, pictured, said: “I have to, because it’s a big risk. Imagine we do well in the next three or four games and then something happens to Leo? We cannot take that risk.

“Who? That’s a different question. Something is going to come up. Everybody is waiting until the last minute, so until a week on Thursday we are going to make sure we get the best player we can.”

Obviously we need another experienced stiker and that's a very clear and unambiguous statement from Gus. If we can get someone who scores a few goals when they are most needed it will be worth whatever it costs.Gus will look very silly if he doesn't get a striker in after that statement. How about trying to get Vaz Te from West Ham? He was a prolific goalscorer in the Championship last season (especially against us!) but he's not hacking it in the Premiership.

That’s a good shout – I think Vaz Te is a very good player, especially at Championship level and not really getting the games at West Ham. The only issue will be that he will almost certainly expect to be starting each game – and I doubt Gus will want to play 2 up front.

I really hope we stick with two wingers – been wanting to see it for such a long time but when we have tried it hasn’t always worked. Was so pleased it came off on Sunday and thought our front 3 made their 3 look ordinary (even Zaha).

I like this statement as there are no if's or but's about it. The last few words, 'the best player we can,' suggest that there are a few available.

Every week we wait is one less week of wages we have to pay so I wouldn't be surprised if it's an expensive deal that we are considering. Someone like City's Guidetti for example.

Hovite says...

All I know is that all the names suggested in the past on here have turned out to be wrong and I have no reason to think that we would be even be close to getting this next player right.

No one saw, Kuzs, Bruno, Bridge, Upson, Bruno, Orlandi, Lopez or Ulloa coming.

The club has a much wider list than what we could put together.

The odds are that every player mentioned on here can be crossed off the list.

WestStander17 says...

Guidetti from City would be a great shout although with City not really having too much to play for in the league, they might want to try him out themselves.

We seem to have a decent relationship with City too having loaned Razak and Assulin last season.

Anyway, Gus seems to be on it. Does anyone know if there are any rules that will be effecting our search? i.e. Domestic loans only or something.

Also, I haven't seen any news on Kuszczak and his back which he seemed to tweek quite badly at the end of Sunday's game. Anyone heard anything? Wouldn't want to be without him for any of the remaining games!

wonder if Gus is looking for another hold up striker (i.e. a like for like if Leo gets injured)? Should have a good idea of who's out there (even for loan); bearing in mind our endless pursuit of this type of player for the last year and beyond. Difficult balancing act between getting someone who's good enough but is prepared to play a supporting role, as probably opposed to the lead.
I also wonder if Gus will view the employment of 'two wingers' as a luxury only afforded at home or with attacking opposition? Lua Lua put in a lot of defensive work on Sunday and like the much maligned Barnes before him (the comparison stops there... Promise), cover for the roaming Bridge is a necessity with, or indeed without, a covering midfield player, who tends to play down the centre (Hammond or Crofts). Whatever happens the same starting eleven/formation every week brigade, much as the 4-4-2, play two strikers brigade before them, will, I fear, have some disappointments ahead of them. We may play 'one way' but we do change our tactical options depending on the opposition. Palarse do not flood the midfield. Lots of other teams do. If it were as simple as some people think, scouting the opposition, watching videos and being as prepared as you can be would not be necessary. We'd just be good enough to take on any side and do our thing. We are not. No one is. Planning is (nearly) everything in the modern game… Or so you would think. Sunday showed that Gus also understands passion and taking a few risks.
So, as regular readers of this site will know, we are only as good as our last game and the next game is a very different prospect. Let us take the whole and hope that the sum of it equates to a sunny day in May, at a hallowed venue in London... And if it does not, do not boo and sulk. For we are rising, not setting. We are waxing, not waning. We are Brighton and we play one way.

Yeah I sort of put Zamora up to automatically rule him out as a joke to go with my previous post.

However on reflection and the circumstances making it a 99% chance of QPR getting relegated I wouldn't see anything wrong with grabbing him now. He has no future or emotional attachment with QPR so he needs to think about where his future will be next season.

If he comes here, we wouldn't have to guarantee him a play every game deal. 15-20 mins cameo a game would suit him if his max is 45 mins. Straight sub for Ulloa at the end of the games for 5 games, then the evil one is back ;o)

They talk about the supporters being the 12th man, but with Zamora here for a promotion push, at the Amex he would make it a 13th.

Zamora is the only player we could get at this time of the season who we could trust in wanting promotion with us.

In all seriousness, I'm glad to hear this pledge from Gus because right now, our play-off hopes rest or fall on the broad shoulders of Spanish Len.

Can't decide whether playing Forest away in our next match is a good or bad thing. On the one hand, they're due a bad result, on the other, we couldn't face a harder fixture.

Should be a fantastic atmosphere at the City Ground and if we get anything out of the game at all, it will be a bonus in my book.

I'll settle for winning our four remaining home games and sneaking a 1-0 victory at Peterborough.

FWS,i agree, planning is very much a large part of the modern game, and like the best boxers can change between North and South paw when needed,we should have a plan B and C,that Gus can implement, from the touchline with the nod of the head. All our lads have played several formations,so could adapt instantly, imho. UTA

Hovite whilat I get what you say about Zamora his ability to play 90 minutes is a must, and as he can't, then I think he is off the radar.

Ulloa will star all the games Gus feels he is fit enough to. The need for a second striker is not just about resting Ulloa, we need cover should he get injured, 45 minutes from Zamora won't cut it.

Nice idea but a risk we couldn't afford to take, IMHO.
How about Zamora and another?

Hovite says...
2:46pm Tue 19 Mar 13

The thing is Vegas, no matter who we get in, if Ulloa does get injured our promotion hopes are over anyway.

I don't think we could get anyone to fit in who would come close to Ulloa so an injury for him is not an option.

I am pretty sure that when Barnes comes back, Gus would use him anyway, just because he knows how the team plays. To use a loan player would be considered a high risk.

The way I see it is that we have got 5 games without Barnes, and Ulloa just playing 75-80 mins a game for these will keep him fresh. Zamora would be perfect for this and he wouldn't be demanding a play every game deal because of his injury, and he's not like that anyway.

Yeah I see where you are coming from, not sure I totally agree but I do get your thinking on this one.

If Zamora, or any that has player recently made a comeback from injury is signed, then I hope we also take a youngster on loan too, just for added security. I suppose Barker could be seen as that young player but if there is a better option I would hope that we would take it.

Apparently Dirty 'arry rates BZ very highly, and sees him as one of their best chances of escaping the dreaded drop, so why would he let him come to Brighton? It does not make sense. I think a good young 'un on the fringes at a PL club would be a more likely assumption.

pte says...
3:19pm Tue 19 Mar 13

The way I see it, if the loan has to play every week then its likely to be a different type of player to Ulloa, probably a winger that can score goals.

I would think Gus is riding a wave at the moment and can get whatever he wants. The GM debate was useful in that it may have embarrassed the board and so strengthened Gus's hand with the acquisition of a loan

Hovite says...
3:23pm Tue 19 Mar 13

A fit Zamora would be great for dirty arry, but only getting 45 mins out of him a game in a relegation battle doesn't help him. 15 mins a game helps us and is a lower risk to his injury.

The good thing about Forest under Billy Davis is that they go all out, especially at home, and are unlikely to change they way they play when they meet us unlike some teams who park the bus when they play us irrespective of whether they're home or away. This means that there will be space at the back and I reckon, if Gus is able to stick to his policy of needing wins not draws, and if he dares play with two wingers again, we could be in with a serious chance of getting something from the game.

And why would they, given their recent form. After six wins in a row, they are threatening to do a "Reading" and might even catch Hull for second spot, although that's still a tall order. Didn't realise Jara Reyes was playing at right back for them. Looking at their line up against Hull, they must have some serious firepower if they can afford to leave Billy Sharp and Dexter Blackstock on the bench. Going to be some test for us.

We refer to the, 'right striker,' Gus refers to the, 'best we can get,' two different things.

We might throw out names that can score and would like more playing time, I get the feeling that Gus will have to choose from who we can afford from those willing to come.

If he had said, the best we can get at any price, that would have been exciting, but no way could he say that.

I wonder just how many players are available for loan and are strikers. I would have to think that we are only looking at prem level players. Is it still possible to loan from abroad?

In an ideal world I would like Poyet to sign 2 strikers on loan. One as cover for Ulloa (like for like) and one to compliment him, a temporary replacement for CMS.
Of course it will be hard enough for the Albion to acquire one so two is dreamsville.
However if we were to sign two it might not be a totally stupid idea to get Vokes in again. I expect quite alot of flak for this suggestion but Vokes has the advantage of knowing how we play and would not expect to start. He did have his moments last season and was considerably better than Paynter.
Having got cover for Ulloa then Poyet could concentrate on recruiting another forward perhaps one of the young fringe premiership players whose names have been mentioned, budget permitting of course.
Thoughts anyone ?

VegasSeagull says...
6:47pm Tue 19 Mar 13

Ballantrrae just who we might get is beyond me, so many variables to consider.

I like the idea of, 'like for like,' might be hard to come by, look how long it took us to get him. Of course borrowing from the prem would make that easier as there are several like Ulloa, but are they available.

You suggest that we go for two, well I think you know I fully agree with that idea.
Witht eh luck we have had either Ulloa or the loanee will be sidelined and we will be back to square one. I was saying this when we signed Ulloa, and back then we were better off in the striker department.

Gus has, 'pledged,' a striker so we know one is coming and I would have to think that Gus pretty much knows who, maybe a short list of 2 or 3 players. For all we know the deal might already have been done.
