Poyet odds cool - but he's still favourite

Gus Poyet Gus Poyet

Gus Poyet’s odds for the Reading job were easing slightly this morning but he remained favourite for the post – and odds-on with most bookies.

Meanwhile Albion were continuing to offer no comment on reports their manager has been in contact with the Premier League strugglers.

The Argus were told this morning that the Seagulls' chief executive Paul Barber was not available for comment at this stage.

Reading were also offering no confirmation of an approach for the Seagulls boss.

Their move for Poyet had slipped down the television and radio news agenda this morning as fans from both sides awaited the next development.

Poyet has been strongly linked with an array of top-flight jobs in the past year, most notably Wolves when they were battling against relegation last season.

But he has stayed put to guide Albion towards the Championship play-off race.

Poyet was a best price of 8/11 for the Madejski Stadium position this morning having been as short as 1/10 yesterday afternoon.

Former Southampton manager Nigel Adkins, who was thought to be a near certainty for the Reading job at one stage, remained second favourite with odds coming in to as short as 7/4.

Talk Sport saying compensation package has been agreed and Poyet's on his way to Reading. He did say on Sun that if it was your last game, beating Palace 3 - 0 was a great way to leave a football club. Shouldn't be allowed mid season.

The only crumb of comfort is that Talk Sport are better known as Talk S***e, so fingers crossed it's BS.

And although I know compensation is regarding paying up his contract, there really can be no compensation to losing GP.

In my memory of Reading they have normally been in a lowlier place or at best on a level with BHA. Both clubs have decent stadier but BHA's is better. BHA is on the up, Reading are not and I would back Harry to keep QPR up before Gus at Reading. There are a few very good managers out of work at the moment so it will be Gus's loss if it all goes wrong.

All I can add is that if he does get tempted away, I hope the board have someone of equally high standingto take his place. We are never going to retain or recruit our high profile players in the same way Gus does if we end up with one of the many 'journeyman' managers out there who just hop from one sacking to another.

Di Matteo, break the bank Tony.

I'd be very surprised if he went to Reading. Can't really understand why anyone would swap Brighton for Reading, both as a place to live and a football club to manage! Brighton has got so much going for it and it's not inconceivable that the two clubs will find themselves in opposite positions in the league in the next year or two.

But if he does go I wouldn't worry too much about his coaching and tactical abilities (some have said we are actually slightly underachieving at the moment) but would miss his obvious powers and connections in the transfer market especially with the Spanish contingent (both current and potential). i wouldn't like him taking players like David with him.

Whither goes the Gus bus? No Gus in August then but the club will not be bust.

No doubting he has been VERY good for the club. He has established a cultured way of playing the game - unknown to past generations of Albion supporters. He has been the perfect man to lead us into our new stadium. For that we should be very grateful. I feel that he has probably achieved as much as he is going to achieve at this club. Even if he comes back for some of our players - they will not be given away cheaply. Brighton will will be a much richer club.

Basically, Gus is not interested in BHA. He is interested in himself and his CV. Loyalty doesn't come into it. He has stated his aim of managing Uruguay one day, and needs to cut his teeth in the premiership - so he needs to get there as soon as he can. Personally I would be very surprised if he goes to Reading, but maybe Tony thinks Gus has gone as far as he can with the Albion, knowing that if we go up he will probably be off anyway. Maybe he feels that it would benefit both us and Gus if he went now - or maybe he has a ready-made replacement up his sleeve, and the compensation we get for Gus would help pay for that. Who knows.

I think it is a win-win situation for us, and Tony is an astute businessman.

I agree with those that are worried by the silence from all concerned parties. No news could well be bad news in this instance i can't help but feel.

On balance i can't see Gus to going to reading where the prospects - both short and long term - don't appear to be as fruitful as down here. But then on the whole We'll just have to take it as it comes won't we? If we lose Gus we've got the squad for another manager to step in and get the squad up for it and finish off a successful play off push.

I guess its que sera sera, I will be sorry to see him go, as he's definitely taken us up several levels. I also agree that TB needs to look high if Gus goes, someone that has played and managed at the highest level, not just another Journeyman, BHA deserve much better than that now.
I am worried that players follow him if he goes to Reading, lets all hope that if they do we get as many Russian millions as we can, that's if AZ actually has any,! I seem to remember several wealthy Russians arriving at Pompey over the years and look what happened to them !!!

That has made me feel better Vince. The Albion does not finish because one of the personnel leaves. We the fans are the Albion. Who knows, a new manager may have the same effect as one joining a relegation threatened club and goes on to keep them up. In Readings case I don't think even Gus can save them. A new man at the helm at The Albion will have the players wanting to prove themselves to him and hey presto we are in the play-offs. Thanks Vince I really do feel much better. Let's stay positive regardless of what happens.UTA

Agree with those who suggest moving to Reading from us may not be a necessary move for Gus right now.
So while I've no evidence to back this up, the media "noise" could be nothing more than Gus using Reading as a 'stalking horse' to keep his name circulating at Premiership levels?
He keeps himself in the public eye, commits his "future" to Brighton (because Reading are not a big enough move) and he's talked about nationally while a hero in Brighton.
Even if the clubs have agreed compensation, Poyet is in the driving seat...??
On the other hand........

I think the Reading owner has shot himself in the Foot.He should have waited until the end of the season or sacked McDermott before.A new Manager now has very little to gain and a lot to lose in a short space of time.

Vince agree .Thinking along those lines, my one concern is if he goese to Reading he,ll have more cash especially if they go down( parachute payment) &our Spanish lads could be sucked away.

What ARE you talking about? The last time we were 'level' with Reading was when we beat them to the Div 2 title in 2002 (they were runners up).

Since then they have been in the premier league for 3 seasons (including the current one).

We all like bigging our club up but be realistic! I swear most of the comments on here are from fans who think the albion was invented in August 2011 when the stadium opened.

As in footbal loyalty isn't really a consideration, look at Adkins, look at Reading. So if Gus wants to go he will, but please remember he has been with the club long enough to produce this team. Talk of premiership and we will need far better players than we have now if we want to stay up when we get there. Should Gus go then we need an experiencd premiership manager, Di Matteo would be perfect, but someone of his class. Having said that I do not want him to leave because the football we play is so attractive with very few bad games. The team played at Bolton in the same way they play at home anmd I am still floating on ar since last Sunday, even Holloay admitted we were a far better team on the day. UTA

Sorry, but there have been a lot of 'bad games' I have seen this season where we did not play particularly well, or to our strengths. I would also slightly dispute that our football is that attractive. Too many times we have passed the ball around in our half, flattering to deceive, with little end result when we get in the opposing penalty area. That is more frustrating than 'attractive' I would say. However, since Ulloa came we have improved in that area.
I am not knocking Gus but all this talk of Gus making us play attractively is somewhat subjective I my view.
I am not advocating a long ball philosophy though by any means.
As for Di Matteo, I wholeheartedly agree with you.

Except that any new manager at Reading won't be blamed if, as seems very likely, they are relegated. Also, someone going in will firstly ensure sufficient funds will be made available for a promotion push next year. Of course there's never any guarantee of success.
