When were you last "loyal" to somebody when you'd had an offer from someone who may have been offering to double your salary and make your working life a lot easier helping you get where you want to be?

This is not black and white and if Poyet goes he will have substantial reasons I'm sure. It may be the club and him have grown apart for various reasons.

Don't know how this is going to pan out, but having read the hundreds of posts on this subject I really think its time a lot of people took a reality check. Having followed the Albion for 40 years I can say that the only thing that has remained unchanged is the shirt colours (basically)and the fact that they still play football. Players come and go, managers too, back room staff, fans change, even the stadium has changed. Professional football is a business and Gus like everything else thinks about his career prospects. If he goes its because he thinks it will help him on his way to a top PL or equivalent job in the future, and good luck to him. Talk of loyalty and commitment to the cause is for deluded fans not professionals.

My paper said parachute payment £23mil. My back of fag packet calculation for Amex season ticket sales £10mil, add in catering and other seat sales say £15 mil. He will get twice the budget at Reading. Obvious pay rise, he is bound to say yes.....however if he fails to get automatic promotion it's not looking so good. Albion assets, Tony Bloom, ground and soon training facilities, fan numbers. This is a good gig for any manager. Benitez talks Spanish.

Ok this whole saga is real bad timing so lets get back to the real problem of a striker. Sinclair would be good for loan not sure if he can play at more than 3 clubs in one season. Failing getting a loanee I feel we shoul play vincente or orlandi up front with ulloa and bring in one of the dev squad to give ulloa a rest when we are 2 - 0 up. Play lua lau and buckley as we did with Palarse. Back to GP going; we always have the secret weapon of Charlie Oatway; he must have had some of GP's tactics rub off onto him... Or maybe not.

Having said that, I can't help feeling that Gus has burnt a lot of bridges in the last 24 hours or so.

Even talk of this at this stage of the season has left a bitter taste in my mouth.

I wish Gus all the best if he does move on but sadly for me he will have tarnished his reputation a little.

It's all still ifs and buts for now though.

What is it people actually want Gus,Brighton, or indeed Reading to come out and say. Surely, until something definite is known by all the parties, then there's nothing to say. Why should the club or Gus comment on what remains speculation? That's not to say there's nothing to it of course but I'm sure the Argus will be the first to know something concrete and let us know, likewise the club UTA

I understand Gus getting some stick on here mainly because of the timing and the fact that should he choose to go it would almost certainly end our promotion challenge.

He apparently is thinking it over and I can understand why. Readings owner has obviously tempted him with a huge financial incentive to get them promoted and probably doubling his and Tannos salary.

But he has much to consider with Brighton. A chairman he can trust who will make funds available and ploughing more of his personal fortune into the training academy. A bespoke squad of talented players who know and understand his style and ambition.

It's gonna be a tough call, and whatever he decides I wish him well.

Now time moving on i am getting a little cross. If GP even for a second (rumours say 24 hrs) thinking let alone has been talking the timing is all wrong here,to be playing silly bees .
In Tony we really do have to trust now as if it were me i would on current even thin info ,actually be the one calling the shots and be lining up a replacement and Gus could sail away straight away.
For all the good he has done he is throwing it back at the albion and Tony even though he has been backed (ulloa in jan ,an example) to our financial limit at present .
He has touted himself to much lately Imho. Bad timing yes but may bite gus harder than he thinks.

What many younger supporters may not know is our previous history may repeat itself.
Our last rise to prominence was started by Brian Clough ,then his assistant Peter Tayor. They both laid the ground work which Alan Mullery benefited from and took us on to today's prem equivalent those that followed also even Jimmy Melia.
This last few years wiyh gus has only been the begining of our resurgence not the end !

I think he might be using this as a bargaining chip with TB to maybe increase his transfer kitty now for a striker and next year, who knows?

If he does go we will be just fine as the Albion job is a big job these days.

Whatever happens Gus deserves the credit for transforming BHAFC into a cosmopolitan team playing attractive football at the top of the division, and has brought in some brilliant players since he got here. He'd go sooner or later anyway. What we hope is that he stays, gets Brighton up, then decides what to do. If he stays and we don't go up, then there will be many vacancies still open to him. He can't really want to go to Reading surely? Spurs, Chelsea yes, Reading? Might as well go to Palace.

Well I for one am still totally puzzled by the whole deal.

With all things being equall doesn't this look like a no brainer for Gus, go where you are likely going to be relegated or stay where you stand a chance of promotion. I guess things are not as equall as we would like them to be.

Gus asked for 24 hours to consider things, that request alone tells us that the offer has some attractions, some things that are better than Brighton have to offer.

If he does go I wonder if the owner and fans of Reading know what they are getting.

Gus will change the way they play, no more kick and rush stuff. To change a style of play takes time, and probabaly some new players. Look how long it has taken Brighton to adapt.

The new style will be as ours, slow patient build up, lots of sideways passing, passes that go nowhere. Keep the ball and wait your chances. Yes he will have the money to buy players but they will have to play his way.

The idea of an instant return to the prem could be a problem for Gus, the owner and the fans. As we all know the championship division is the hardest one to get out of and then you add the new playing style to be learned, I wouldn't bank on a instant return to the prem.

Reading have a few decent players, would they stay, would Gus have to start a rebuild within days of the season ending.

Gus has made one or two errors in judgement when it comes to those he has signed for Brighton, but I am sure he has learned from those mistakes, but that doesn't mean he won't make further mistakes. If he is spending big money, and we know he will be because the owner has stated that a big war chest will be available, and buys a couple of wronguns will the Russian and the fans forgive him.

If you get it wrong on a decent but smaller budget you might get away with it, just as Gus has. Get it wrong having spent a small fortune and your butt is heading down the road.

If Gus goes I wish him luck but in all honesty I think it could be a disaster waiting to happen, in terms of the career of Gus Poyet.

Reading are as good relegated already.
Their stadium only holds 24k, getting 23k av. Next year, in the Championship, they will probably dip below 20k av.
Relegated Premier League clubs do not have a good history of bouncing straight back, and, with the new financial rules coming in, throwing money at a desperate promotion attempt will backfire.
With a bit more effort we'll pass them on our way up.
Gus might have noticed he is the 11th longest serving manager in the FL - most other clubs have a revolving door for their managers (some spin faster than others).

A few people will now be holding back from purchasing/renewing until the picture becomes clear.If the situ drags on,which I don't believe TB will allow to happen, then those finances will be held back and not actually in the clubs accounts.

Thought long and hard about bargaining chip issues but at the end of the day the clubs finances are what they are ,we must never ,never end up like so many other clubs.
For real managerial support and loyalty look at Ally McCoist at Rangers .
If money Gus 's problem then time to say thanks for everything an move on fast.

My opinion is that tomorrow's headline will be: I'm Staying."
I just get the feeling this is Gus and his agent's lavish way of keeping his name bubbling at national level to let bigger clubs know he's in the market.
He respectfully turns down an offer from Reading, declares it would've been too much of a wrench to leave a fabulous club like Brighton and that Tony is a tremendous Chairman for allowing him to speak in the first place - a fact which shows "what a great relationship we have."
The people of Brighton rejoice, Reading end up with a decent bloke in Nigel Adkins and the returning hero has ramped up the value of his own stock...
As Del Boy would say, "Everyone's a winner, Rodders, Bonnet da douche."

(Then again, I could of course, be completely wrong...)

Gus by all accounts met with Reading yesterday which means the 24 hours is up today. I would expect some sort of announcement tomorrow morning.

TB could of course block the move as Gus is under contract similar to what the club did with Vicente by activating the option against Vicente's wishes.

There aren't a lot of managers out there right now who would be a good fit for us. Di Matteo we couldn't afford, Appleton not good enough, Benitez we couldn't afford, Adkins not what we want, Sean Dysche not inspiring, Glenn Hoddell a nutcase.

It really doesn't bear thinking about. Ole Gunnar might be the best fit and has a great relationship with Man U and learnt his trade from Sir Alex.

Lets see what happens. It may be a storm in a teacup.

I think that perhaps Poyet was quite surprised and shaken by the difficulty he has experienced in trying to get a striker in on loan as a result of Hoskins and more especially CMS's injuries.
I suspect that he thought that in the circumstances and with the Premiership within touching distance that the club should push the boat out and really go for it.
I think he may be disallusioned that we haven't (apparently since no one has signed).
Unfortunately Reading have come calling at just the wrong moment. A month ago I don't think Poyet would have been interested. In another month he would have had a better idea in what direction both BHA and Reading are going.
It seems that by the weekend we might know what is decided.
Whatever the result we will need positive action especially if Poyet leaves. Exactly what form that action takes will reveal alot about the club's mindset and ambitions.
To those who have suggested that Bloom should replace Poyet now that would be very costly since (a) Poyet would have to be paid out probably for the rest of his contract and (b) we wouldn't receive the £2 million + compensation being mentioned from Reading. I don't think Bloom is so stupid as to go down that path. Poker player tha he is, he will play a waiting game. Don't forget that we supposedly gave permission for Reading to speak to Gus.

I am thankful for all that Gus has done if he goes, truly. But it's not the end of the world. Think of the caliber of manager that we would attract. We would have to be one of the hottest jobs in the country, maybe Europe. If Gus is willing to walk away from that, so be it. I also think it would be hilarious if he left and we went up in the playoffs and Reading got relegated.

Don't get me wrong I hope he stays, but how long before this happens again.

All this traiter thing is a bit OTT.

I've tried to explain on here, but no one takes any notice, that the only way a manager can find out his market value is by seeing what others are prepared to pay.

If a decent Prem club came in for him in the future, he has a starting point for bargaining.

This is all about market research and should be taken with a pinch of salt.

It's very simple.
Gus is thinking it over. He wants to discuss it with his family about possible location problems etc. as well as football considerations.
He has also to take into account Tarrico's view and possible family options and maybe other members the staff too.
He already knows in his own mind what his preference is. He probably knew that five minutes after talking to the Reading Chairman but also needs to see what Tony says re improved money here. Who wouldn't?
That is why he told Reading he would take 24 hours to decide.
Why can't people understand it?

I seem to recall about a year ago Mcdermott was off to Wolves but didn't go as Reading upped his pay packet. Agent tactics here I think to screw a better deal out of the Albion.

Can't really see him going to this club, never going to be anything other than an also ran in terms of Prem Divn even if they do stay up. He will go to a "special" club, Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man U, Man C but they are unlikely at this stage to employ him.

We shall see.

A few people will now be holding back from purchasing/renewing until the picture becomes clear.If the situ drags on,which I don't believe TB will allow to happen, then those finances will be held back and not actually in the clubs accounts.
Ok Neville,but I still don't know what you would have the club do at this time. As for supporters holding back I just don't see this, although I can understand any disappointment supporters may feel if Gus moves on. However, surely it's the cub we follow not the manager.

Lets be real here, If Poyet chooses Reading over Brighton its because Reading are a bigger, better club to manage than Brighton are.
When was the last time Brighton occupied a spot in the elite of England/won anything for that matter?
RFC can offer more money to Gus, offer Premier league football (for at least 8 more games ;-)) and have a talented enough squad to easily push for an automatic spot in the Champ next season with a significant transfer kitty.

At this present time Brighton and Gus are not even in a playoff spot yet (despite being the best team in the championship according to some on here) which, even if you do just squeeze in is no guarantee of success.


But Brighton have "more fans" so I suppose that must mean Brighton are a bigger club and Gus would be silly to leave...

So you want the club to say that we are actually teasing a valuation out of Reading for our stock value information, and that the intention is to give Gus a new 5 year contract, with a bigger compensation package set up for when he leaves in a season or two.

If they said this, Reading wouldn't divulge this useful info

He should be telling them to come back in the Summer if their still interested - If it's true that he's asked for 24 hours to consider it, and if I were Tony he'd be gone regardless.
What and miss out on the potential £2m compensation which can go to signing a decent replacement? That's commercial suicide. I've got no problem with Gus going now as it will continue to be a will he / won't he stay scenario. You can tell he thinks his destiny for 'better things' is soon. Personally I think his tactical nous is limited and he'll get found out if he has a negative approach at a top club.

GP's ambition is to get to the premier league. He will be asking himself if that is indeed possible given the budget within which he must work at the Albion.

If he considers that that is not really possible he will go eventually regardless. He has to consider what his best chances are of achieving his ambition. Is it to stay and try to achieve it knowing that he will always be challenged by the finances at the Abion or is it to take an opportunity with a club that would give him a greater chance in the transfer market?

It will take some time before Brighton have the cash available that Reading have right now. And even if they do go down Gus will have an extremely good chance of going straight back up which will open doors to jobs with the big boys.

Gus would also be in a possition to immediately snap up all of Brightons Spanish contingent. They are loyal to him and would leave.

Reading would be used as another stepping stone to Chelsea and the expectations on him would not be excessive at a club like Reading so if he achieves anything it would increase his value. He's not going to be considered for the Chelsea job at the end of the season so he has to choose the best prospect for putting himself in the frame in the next few years.

A very good post indeed. Not sure that he would necessarily be able to snap up all the spanish contingent. If the new manager gets us up this year - and I think that is still 'on' - we will be in a stronger position to keep them? Also, am I right in thinking that a deal is sometimes struck where a departing manager cannot go back for a period, to raid his old club?

He won't go, he's had issues with the club over finances for players - he knew there was a board meeting scheduled - so ask for permission to talk to reading and the issues are brought to the forefront.
The finance item is brought to the top of the agenda and they guarantee him additional funding whether we go up or not, this gives him financial parity with the other teams in the top half of the championship at the very least, if we do make it up then the league payments are classed as income, so we stay within the new regs and can afford higher wages to attract better players.
I say he won't go because he has far too much invested in the club to make a blind leap to a poorly attended relegation certainty like Reading, He's playing TB at his own game in order to realise his own aspirations for the club, nothing more. I don't even think he's looking for a contract extension - just guarantees that everyone is pulling in the same direction. -------
but if I'm wrong then at the Leicester game you can all look to the west stand and give me a W/wave. (I'll be the one at the back eating the humble pie).
