Who will fans want IF Gus leaves?
6:45pm Thursday 21st March 2013 in Sport
Albion fans are in suspense tonight as they wait to hear what the future holds for boss Gus Poyet.
The Seagulls manager is wanted by Reading and both clubs have declined to comment on the chances of him going to the Madejski Stadium.
But if - and it is if - he were to end his three-and-half-year connection with the Seagulls, who would fans want to step in?
Names to consider could include...
Roberto di Matteo - Poyet's great mate who was axed by Chelsea this season.
Nigel Adkins - said to be in the running with Poyet for the Reading job and a thinking manager who knows how to win promotion.
Luis Enrique - another linked with the Royals, the former Roma boss had a glittering playing career with Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Owen Coyle - experienced Championship boss axed by Bolton earlier this season.
Mark Hughes - would love to prove a point after being sacked this season by QPR.
Eddie Howe - a bright young tactician who has caused Albion problems.
Joaquin Caparros - David Lopez's former manager at Athletic Bilbao, sacked recently by Mallorca.
What do you think?

That said, I would like Zola, Di Matteo or McDermott and as a last resort Adkins.

Failing that and being a little more realistic I think we have to have someone of equal standing as Gus in the game, a guy that will attract decent players and have hunger enthusiasm and charisma in abundance.
How about Steve Evans? :) just playing.
I'd like to see another young manager get a chance or possibly an assistant somewhere.
RDM would be good but equally a Ronald De Beor or Dennis Bergkamp might get the juices flowing.
The names the Argus mention don't excite me personally.

I can't see it happening, but if Gus did go I'd love to see Mr Tarricco given a chance at running things, atleast until the end of the season. He knows everything about the players, set-up, style etc so would be ideal imo. I'm 95% sure he'd follow Gus though but he'd be my number one choice.
None of those mentioned in the article would be the right replacement if you wanted to continue on the Gus 'blueprint'.

That guy is tactically inept to say the least. He may have won promotion from this league but by the skin of his teeth in the end, and obviously he didn't survive the tougher demands of tactical awareness in the Premier Lge either.
I say Ole Gunner Solskjær. He's about the brightest young prospect out there I believe.

I truly hope that Gus doesn't leave, I agree that we are punching above our weight. That said, if he does go, my preferences, in order, would be:
Adkins
Hughes
Howe
Robinson
NOT Appleton or Coyle or any other journeyman.
I don't think di Matteo would come, but he would be a strong candidate if he would.
Whoever comes, if GP goes, should be backed by the fans, whether we like him or not.

Caparros, great for the spanish boys, and he might just be able to hold on to them. I also like the spanish style of soccer.
Enrique, experienced at a higher level, he must have good contacts too.
Capello, loads of experience and again a big enough name to hold onto our gems.
Mark Hughes, experienced and with a point to prove, he would be really hungry for success.
Stuart Peirce but we would never prise him away from his England job.

Lets get McArthy in.... Only joking but I think there will be a queue 10 mile long to manage Brighton.

Maybe Eddie Howe
Atkins
Holloway (although a ****, he knows how to produce an attacking team)
Ole Gunner Solskjær.
I'd take any one of those 5 over the current manager.

Ole Gunnar for me. Massive contact network and well respected in the game. He has won the Champions league as a player and there aren't many managers around that could boast that.

Owen Coyle & Nigel Adkins come across as decent people but neither is renown for playing 'the Brighton way'. I don't know anything much about Luis Enrique or Joaquin Caparros but I've always thought we could, maybe should, look for a Spanish manager who understands and would continue our style. Di Matteo would be a good bet - knows the English game, would play the right way, but has good tactical nous - less stubborn than Gus and prepared to vary tactics as needed in order to win games, as in the Euro Final.
Many average candidates ,and some very good names mentioned but I would really like the club to not rush any choice if it does come to pass we lose Gus for the rest of the season.
Edgar David's ,ole gunner etc the way to go but for now best bet to ask Vegas ,captain haddock even me in as interim . No cost ,would do it for the love of club,no worries about attracting big signings as window shut, passion in abundance ,no damage to our further careers in management, I could go on but enough for you to get then gist.
No offence to tug ,Neville etc but experience at this end of the season counts ;-)
Seriously calde has to be in mix temporarily as he can at least speak
Spanish .
Got to dash ,crash course in Spanish language course starts at 8.

Of COURSE he's made mistakes, it's how we learn. We have all made mistakes but Gus has been the best thing to happen to our club in many a year and if things have become fractious between the club and Gus then they should sit down and talk it out like adults and clear the air. I feel Reading would be a poison chalice.

It's a situation that will be difficult if not impossible to repair. TB will be looking over his shoulder constantly wondering if GP is the man to entrust with his millions given he's likely to be seduced by the faintest sniff from a richer club.
No one can blame Gus for his ambition
but he has demonstrated he's willing to pursue it at any cost to his employers
I doubt if the trust will ever be there again. As I said in a previous post Gus owes his team's loyal supporters a
proper explanation and more pertinently, the Argus need to ask some searching questions instead of ****-footing around and publishing the usual half-baked, "don't rock the boat" stories. Why is it that football journalists are such a callow breed, afraid to put the sort of points that every fan wants to ask? Indeed why is it that the only indication we get that Gus is APPARENTLY staying comes from a Tweet rather than a properly
constructed in-depth analysis?
Gus...IF THE REPORTS HE'S STAYING ARE TRUE...will be off at the end of the season IF we miss promotion.

Appears to be staying. Does raise rather awkward questions about loyalty. Gus has demonstrated (unless all the reports were wide of the mark) that he was ready to walk away at a defining time in the club's season and possibly the club's history. This was to do with ambition which outweighed his respect for the club and his chairman. It's a situation that will be difficult if not impossible to repair.
