Poyet stays with Albion
8:19pm Thursday 21st March 2013 in Sport Exclusive By Brian Owen
Gus Poyet
Gus Poyet is set to continue as Albion manager.
The Seagulls boss will end two days of speculation by confirming he will stay at The Amex.
Reading reportedly wanted to hand Poyet a short cut to the Premier League and the promise of a large transfer budget this summer in the likely event of them going down.
But he is pledging his allegiance to Albion and their push for the play-offs.

I think it was my threat to invoice Gus for the £51 (that I would lose to betfair if he took the job at Reading) that persuaded him to stay!

Now Poyet can get that striker in on Loan. Make that 2 strikers as you and I agree Vegas.
I think the club come out of this rather well. They didn't stand in Poyet's way and kept to the spirit of their agreement with him. The club also kept its own counsel and I am sure that message will have been noted by other Managers and players (+ their agents) as well.
Poyet too seems to have behaved properly. He listened to what Reading had to say, deliberated and made a fairly quick decision thus letting both clubs know where they stood with him.
A satisfactory result. I am relieved Poyet is still with us.

It's a situation that will be difficult if not impossible to repair. TB will be looking over his shoulder constantly wondering if GP is the man to entrust with his millions given he's likely (apparently) to be seduced by the faintest sniff from a richer club.
No one can blame Gus for his ambition
but he has demonstrated (apparently) he's willing to pursue it at any cost to his employers
I doubt if the trust will ever be there again. As I said in a previous post Gus owes his team's loyal supporters a
proper explanation and more pertinently, the Argus need to ask some searching questions instead of ****-footing around and publishing the usual half-baked, "don't rock the boat" stories. Why is it that football journalists are such a callow breed, afraid to put the sort of points that every fan wants to ask?

Does raise rather awkward questions about loyalty. Gus has demonstrated, IF the reports are to be believed, that he was ready to walk away at a defining time in the club's season and possibly the club's history. This was to do with ambition which outweighed his respect for the club and his chairman.

I don't think we should read any more into this. Let's face it, with Reading he could have had 2 months managing a premiership club, as opposed to his current position where he could, I repeat COULD, have all of next season, and hopefully beyond.
Keep the faith. He hasn't gone, and we'll probably never know the full truth, but that's no reason to doubt him and assume the worst.
In Gus we STILL trust. If you don't, maybe your loyalty should be questioned?

You and the rest of the workers look askance. Couldn't he have waited until we'd reached completion, no one would have blamed him if he went to pastures new once the task, for which he signed up, was complete. Instead he comes back from the brink and tells you (wait for the press conference) that he couldn't possibly leave you when the job's not finished. You of course Hoveite would rejoice at this.

If I was employing someone I wouldn't put up with the public statements he has made or the way he has positioned himself courting managerial offers as a way of pressurising the board. Don't forget the guy has the biggest job outside the Prem, is well paid and still not satisfied. What does that tell you?
The board are biding their time. They can't do anything now at this critical stage. But at the end of the season regardless of which division we are in he'll be gone. The Board will make the assessment that the 2m to pay off his contract will be well worth paying to ensure the long term stability of the club. They may assume that they won't have to pay the 2m because some other club will take him on.
Will Poyet apologize for all this? Probably not

So today I found myself agreeing with someone online and went to type “hear hear” but then remembered seeing someone else type “here here” a couple days earlier.
I was pretty sure the correct phrase was “hear hear” as opposed to the other variants I'd seen (“here here”, “hear here”, “here hear”) but I'd never actually looked it up. So I decided to check popular internet usage using Google:
“hear hear” = 1,740,000 hits
“here here” = 3,880,000 hits
“hear here” = 307,000 hits
“here hear” = 334,000 hits

"Hear Hear or Here Here?

So today I found myself agreeing with someone online and went to type “hear hear” but then remembered seeing someone else type “here here” a couple days earlier.
I was pretty sure the correct phrase was “hear hear” as opposed to the other variants I'd seen (“here here”, “hear here”, “here hear”) but I'd never actually looked it up. So I decided to check popular internet usage using Google:
“hear hear” = 1,740,000 hits
“here here” = 3,880,000 hits
“hear here” = 307,000 hits
“here hear” = 334,000 hits
Hear, hear (usually with a comma and set apart as a self-contained sentence) is the conventional spelling of the colloquial exclamation used to express approval for a speaker or sentiment. It’s essentially short for hear him, hear him or hear this, hear this, where these phrases are a sort of cheer.
Here, here is widely regarded as a misspelling, although it is a common one, and there are ways to logically justify its use. But for what it’s worth, hear, hear is the original form (the Oxford English Dictionary cites examples going back to the 17th century) and is the one listed in dictionaries. English reference books mention here, here only to note that it’s wrong.

So the deal may be that Poyet stays until the end of the season but there is a contract in place that he goes to Reading next season when the bulk of his work can begin. After all he can't save them and he can't sign any new players until next season.
That way even if Brighton go up, Poyet can't change his mind

I must say that I find it hilarious that people treat football managers as if they should be supporters! Most people I know have had to make hard decisions in their working life to achieve a balance of work fulfilment, financial reward, esteem , influence and the freedom to make future choices. Why would football managers be any different? Surely Poyet should be allowed to assess the best option for himself in terms of prospects in all the above. In order to make an assessment, he has to speak with his suitors. To suggest otherwise is malicious mischief!

I love Brighton but managing us is not the biggest job outside the Prem.
There is no problem between Gus and the Directors.
Gus did not go looking for a new position, one came looking for him.
A compensation package would have been agreed before Reading could talk to Gus, so it is not an indication of negotiations having gone a long way with Gus.
He got a job offer, thought about it for a day, and turned it down FFS.

If he's been speaking to Reading, as far as I'm aware, he could only do so after an 'official' approach from Reading and with the consent of the Albion Board. Great news. His possible departure highlighted to me that there was no stand out candidate (who'd want Championship football), to replace Gus, and match the energy, buzz about the place, class, and long term plan .... that he has given us.
This is bad news for the noisy minority who yearn for Tony Pulis tactics of territory and get that lofted ball in the box.
A great day.
We need to have high balls and be more direct sometimes. Not an advocate of pullis but Gus can see how changing how we play can benefit.

Look at it this way. If last Monday morning, someone had said to you 'we can either keep Gus or he can go to a Premiership club right now', which would you have chosen? The fact is he's still here, and for that we should be grateful. You can speculate all you want about his relationship with the board. What hasn't changed is that he is still our manager and that's what we want at the moment, so quit your whinging all you so called Albion fans.
(Sorry, I seem to have missed the sign saying 'DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS!)
The Board as you would expect with TB as Chairman took the mature approach and allowed Gus an initial meeting with Reading to see what they had to offer. Far better than speculation lasting days and weeks. Gus weighed it up and decided not to pursue it. All nipped in the bud very quickly, and in the open.
The Albion win, and many of us will appreciate Gus a little bit more. This won't of course please the noisy minority who now believe Gus to be tainted.

I do not blame him for wanting to better himself and he has always said it would take something special to take him away, well Reading was not special,in my opinion, maybe the money was.
I believe the whole episode was badly handled by the club, media and even Gus himself and it would seem that all is not right in board relationships,it is no doubt frustrating for Poyet re money here but he knew the situation when he signed initially and then extended his contract, which protects both parties.
It did show disrespect to the current players, and fans no matter how people like to view it and the timing was particularly bad,in fact could not have been worse.
Hopefully everyone has learned some lessons from this episode and we can all move on now,me included.
I guess we can expect more of the same next season.

This must leave a sour taste in the mouth with the board.
At this critical time the board has no choice to put up with the situation but next season we'll have a new manager.
Tony Bloom has invested a lot of money in the club and he has his pride. He won't put up with it and nor should he
Gus was sorely tempted and now he sets his sights on renewed promotion push as second best.
Probably not
He was approached by another club-not the other way around so to suggest, like you and your oh so insightful buddy marcoretardelli, that he went looking is, frankly, ridiculous.
Gus was offered a £1.5 MILLION bonus if he kept Reading up-who on here wouldn't need a moment or two to consider that? Especially if one was working in an industry like professional football.
Do you seriously believe that TB and Barber will pay out £2 Million to Gus to get rid of him because he was approached by a club in the Premier League? Unbelievable. Seriously! Unbelievable.

Here's a thought. Reading are definitely going down so any new manager will have to work in the Championship next season. So if Reading want Poyet so badly it doesn't matter if they take him now or wait until next season.
So the deal may be that Poyet stays until the end of the season but there is a contract in place that he goes to Reading next season when the bulk of his work can begin. After all he can't save them and he can't sign any new players until next season.
That way even if Brighton go up, Poyet can't change his mind

I've read some right **** on here tonight, and in that article from The Independant.
Some people are reading far too much into what has happened, and one journalist is trying to make their earlier half cocked story look like it was only incorrect because Poyet changed his mind at the last minute.

Andy Naylor and co, have a word with Gus and ask him to read the comments on this sight and realise just how much he is revered ( bar the 0.01% trolls that is). He doesn't realise just how much hell he has put us through during the past two days. How many managers in the entire English football league have fans that are as passionate about him as us. I believe you realised that Gus at the eleventh hour.

Where did the Independent get the idea that Poyet was upset over losing Noone? Noone was sold some time ago and unless someone specifically mentioned it to the Independent, the paper wouldnt even know who Noone was.
Now all this aggro blows up on the eve of Albion's big push and is the result of Poyet being unable to keep his big trap shut over the budget.
Even if we get promoted Poyet won't be here next season because no club especially not one in the Premiership can afford to have this sort of speculation going on all the time.
What other manager acts like this? I don't know one manager. There was Mourihno but he got the sack at Chelsea and Poyet hasnt achieved a tenth of what he had
