Poyet stays with Albion

Gus Poyet Gus Poyet

Gus Poyet is set to continue as Albion manager.

The Seagulls boss will end two days of speculation by confirming he will stay at The Amex.

Reading reportedly wanted to hand Poyet a short cut to the Premier League and the promise of a large transfer budget this summer in the likely event of them going down.

But he is pledging his allegiance to Albion and their push for the play-offs.

Does raise rather awkward questions about loyalty. Gus has demonstrated, IF the reports are to be believed, that he was ready to walk away at a defining time in the club's season and possibly the club's history. This was to do with ambition which outweighed his respect for the club and his chairman.
It's a situation that will be difficult if not impossible to repair. TB will be looking over his shoulder constantly wondering if GP is the man to entrust with his millions given he's likely (apparently) to be seduced by the faintest sniff from a richer club.
No one can blame Gus for his ambition
but he has demonstrated (apparently) he's willing to pursue it at any cost to his employers
I doubt if the trust will ever be there again. As I said in a previous post Gus owes his team's loyal supporters a
proper explanation and more pertinently, the Argus need to ask some searching questions instead of ****-footing around and publishing the usual half-baked, "don't rock the boat" stories. Why is it that football journalists are such a callow breed, afraid to put the sort of points that every fan wants to ask?

Can we wait to see Gus's statement first please before making accusations regarding his loyalty to the club Reading made an approach and he spoke to them, end of, he might just be cranking things up to push the back room boys to generate some income to buy more or better players we are or should be in the same boat with exception of parachute payments, but then they have still got to pay premiership wages!

No matter how well you get on with your boss, there's no harm in letting him know that you have options elsewhere. Who wouldn't do this if it came along as a opportunity to strengthen their current position.

I don't think we should read any more into this. Let's face it, with Reading he could have had 2 months managing a premiership club, as opposed to his current position where he could, I repeat COULD, have all of next season, and hopefully beyond.

Keep the faith. He hasn't gone, and we'll probably never know the full truth, but that's no reason to doubt him and assume the worst.

OK Hoveite let's try and put this in simple terms. You're in a job, not just any old job you understand, but an important one, the sort of job that has required a huge input from a lot of dedicated people. There's not an endless amount of money available but you've all pulled together to make it work to the best of you ability. You're just weeks from completing the task which has the potential to be a real winner. Suddenly the main man, your boss, starts having a look at what else is on offer. What other projects are around and will they pay me more?
You and the rest of the workers look askance. Couldn't he have waited until we'd reached completion, no one would have blamed him if he went to pastures new once the task, for which he signed up, was complete. Instead he comes back from the brink and tells you (wait for the press conference) that he couldn't possibly leave you when the job's not finished. You of course Hoveite would rejoice at this.

Why can't people see it? Must be a lack of brain cells.

If I was employing someone I wouldn't put up with the public statements he has made or the way he has positioned himself courting managerial offers as a way of pressurising the board. Don't forget the guy has the biggest job outside the Prem, is well paid and still not satisfied. What does that tell you?

The board are biding their time. They can't do anything now at this critical stage. But at the end of the season regardless of which division we are in he'll be gone. The Board will make the assessment that the 2m to pay off his contract will be well worth paying to ensure the long term stability of the club. They may assume that they won't have to pay the 2m because some other club will take him on.

Will Poyet apologize for all this? Probably not

Yes Ballantrrae the next step is the loan striker, and I think that has already been done. As we agree, two strikers would make sense but I am certain that at least one has already been secured.

Whilst the silence was so annoying regarding Gus and Reading, you are of course right in that this was the correct way to handle things.

This day will come again, there will be other suiters but Gus has set a bottom line that must be crossed for him to go. That bottom line would not inlcude a club in dire trouble.

This is hard work but I'll repeat the question I asked earlier in a slightly different way....is it a crime to be in a minority and question GP's long-term loyalty? I refer you to the example I gave to Hoveite and would expand by agreeing that it's good news that there will be an apparent show of continuity until the end of the season but the fact remains that the manager was looking around for a new opportunity at a time that was crucial to the club's future. You don't know , neither do I, why he changed his mind but I think you'd struggle to argue it was through loyalty.

I'm surprised, thought he would actually go. At least there will be stability until the end ofthe season. I do think there will be a lot of dust to settle, and the landscape may have changed forever. The language and tone in the next few days/weeks will be interesting. I don't suppose the club has appreciated the situation it found itself in at such a crucial time.

Hear, hear (usually with a comma and set apart as a self-contained sentence) is the conventional spelling of the colloquial exclamation used to express approval for a speaker or sentiment. It’s essentially short for hear him, hear him or hear this, hear this, where these phrases are a sort of cheer.

Here, here is widely regarded as a misspelling, although it is a common one, and there are ways to logically justify its use. But for what it’s worth, hear, hear is the original form (the Oxford English Dictionary cites examples going back to the 17th century) and is the one listed in dictionaries. English reference books mention here, here only to note that it’s wrong.

Here's a thought. Reading are definitely going down so any new manager will have to work in the Championship next season. So if Reading want Poyet so badly it doesn't matter if they take him now or wait until next season.

So the deal may be that Poyet stays until the end of the season but there is a contract in place that he goes to Reading next season when the bulk of his work can begin. After all he can't save them and he can't sign any new players until next season.

That way even if Brighton go up, Poyet can't change his mind

You need to ignore the idiots who cannot string more than one line together, because some of them would have a bad word to say about Poyet if he stole their teddy bear.

I think it was a case of Poyet keeping his options wide open, as unless he gets us in the play offs this season, he'll be getting his P45 in the summer.

I think if any other premiership club other than Reading or Wigan came in for him, he'd be gone. He's under a lot of pressure to deliver here, and I'm not sure he is capable. He certainly hasn't proved it this season.

Most people I know have had to make hard decisions in their working life to achieve a balance of work fulfilment, financial reward, esteem , influence and the freedom to make future choices. Why would football managers be any different? Surely Poyet should be allowed to assess the best option for himself in terms of prospects in all the above. Albion chief executive Paul Barber has underlined the strength of the club’s relationship with Poyet.

Speaking when Poyet’s name was first mentioned as a possible successor to McDermott last week, Barber told The Argus he was ready for speculation.

He said: “Gus is our manager. He is doing a great job, he is under a good contract and we are delighted to have him here so long may it continue.

“It is inevitable when you have got a top manager, a popular manager, someone who has got a huge amount of respect in the game, whenever there is a vacancy at a club at the next level it is inevitable that there are going to be links.

“It is something we are used to, it is something Gus is used to.

“We have a great relationship between Gus, myself the chairman.

Yes, he's free to do look elsewhere but if he does people shouldn't be deluded and think that everything's rosy in the Amex garden.

Moreover, in the same way the club are free to find a manager that not only makes veiled threats and criticisms of the board but also prepared to leave everyone in the lurch at a critical time.

Poyet was quick enough to throw his toys out the pram when Forster did similar and when Calderon nearly went to Southampton so what's sauce for the goose is also sauce for the gander

Even better than the Palace Win - which was (of course) sublime! Not to mention the fact we're already beating Prem teams!

I've read some right **** on here tonight, and in that article from The Independant.
Some people are reading far too much into what has happened, and one journalist is trying to make their earlier half cocked story look like it was only incorrect because Poyet changed his mind at the last minute.

I love Brighton but managing us is not the biggest job outside the Prem.
There is no problem between Gus and the Directors.
Gus did not go looking for a new position, one came looking for him.
A compensation package would have been agreed before Reading could talk to Gus, so it is not an indication of negotiations having gone a long way with Gus.

He got a job offer, thought about it for a day, and turned it down FFS.

I'm amazed that there are any negative comments after receiving this excellent news. I can only guess that these comments are made by non Albion fans/supporters who were against the Amex being built. The football this season, apart from the odd game, has been brilliant and enjoyable to watch. The atmosphere in the stadium last Sunday epitomised the all round support the lads and Gus have. To all those with anti Gus comments can I suggest you go and support Palace that way you might, just might, see what Gus has achieved. To all you real fans out there I think the future looks bright not 'orange'. UTA

Marcotardelli do not question your perception - you are spot on and just because Hovite and a couple of others are so up Gus' backside doesn't mean that we can't see through the smokescreen. Gus has had his feelers out for ages. He has little respect for how the club is being run and Has an inflated opinion of himself and couldn't care less about this club. I actually don't have a problem with any of that but please Gus don't take us for idiots. We see your body language and hear your comments especially when you don't get your own way. The number of staff that have left since you were appointed is staggering. Your 'it's me or him' attitude has finally caught up with you and you will be history soon. Prove your worth with three points away from home for a change and an attacking formation. Please don't repeat your disgraceful team selection v WHU last year at the same stage of the season. Over to you Hovite!
You are so spot on its scary.
I think Gus would jump at the chance to go to Wigan especially if they were still in the premier at the end of the season. Gus is an admirer of Martinez and the way he has set his teams up to play.

Don't understand these comments about the Board's possible attitude. Gus is under contract to the Albion. If he's been speaking to Reading, as far as I'm aware, he could only do so after an 'official' approach from Reading and with the consent of the Albion Board.
Nothing underhand - and also I believe the Board have always said if a Premiership Club wanted to speak to him they wouldn't stand in his way - but they were probably reasonably relaxed about Reading's approach as it was not likely to be 'big' enough to attract Gus

Thrilled Gus is staying! Right now he is such an integral part of the ‘new’ Brighton project that the whole stability of the club could have been temporarily damaged.

I would be delighted and proud if at some time in the future, Gus manages a ‘super’ club. Hopefully, by then he would have, with others, completed the task of hoisting this club up by its boot straps from the depth of the football league, into a fabulously well run, sustainable, highly respected and admired football club

This.

The Board as you would expect with TB as Chairman took the mature approach and allowed Gus an initial meeting with Reading to see what they had to offer. Far better than speculation lasting days and weeks. Gus weighed it up and decided not to pursue it. All nipped in the bud very quickly, and in the open.

The Albion win, and many of us will appreciate Gus a little bit more. This won't of course please the noisy minority who now believe Gus to be tainted.

On the subject of the press--Sky were very quick to give the story headlines and stirred everything up--The Independent suggesting it was a done deal--NOT GOOD journalism. But I look on Sky this morning and they STILL have a headline Gus due for talks with Reading--What do they know. Proves the press in the UK, in parts, still 'makes things up'. Many did not believe it would happen and this just proves the press hyped this up and got a lot of people worried, however although many were convinced Gus would not go there are always thoses doubts in the mind. WELL DONE GUS-- MADE THE RIGHT DECISION. I hope you get a standing ovasion at the Amex!!

Well, firstly I am really pleased that Gus has decided to stay, lets support him fully now and try and get into the playoffs at least.
I do not blame him for wanting to better himself and he has always said it would take something special to take him away, well Reading was not special,in my opinion, maybe the money was.
I believe the whole episode was badly handled by the club, media and even Gus himself and it would seem that all is not right in board relationships,it is no doubt frustrating for Poyet re money here but he knew the situation when he signed initially and then extended his contract, which protects both parties.
It did show disrespect to the current players, and fans no matter how people like to view it and the timing was particularly bad,in fact could not have been worse.
Hopefully everyone has learned some lessons from this episode and we can all move on now,me included.
I guess we can expect more of the same next season.

The board are biding their time. They can't do anything now at this critical stage. But at the end of the season regardless of which division we are in he'll be gone. They may assume that they won't have to pay the 2m because some other club will take him on.

Gus was offered a £1.5 MILLION bonus if he kept Reading up-who on here wouldn't need a moment or two to consider that? Especially if one was working in an industry like professional football.

Well you can blame the press for creating "speculation" but who stoked it up with constant bleating about budget restraints? It was your hero Poyet!

Where did the Independent get the idea that Poyet was upset over losing Noone? Noone was sold some time ago and unless someone specifically mentioned it to the Independent, the paper wouldnt even know who Noone was.

Now all this aggro blows up on the eve of Albion's big push and is the result of Poyet being unable to keep his big trap shut over the budget.

Even if we get promoted Poyet won't be here next season because no club especially not one in the Premiership can afford to have this sort of speculation going on all the time.

What other manager acts like this? I don't know one manager. There was Mourihno but he got the sack at Chelsea and Poyet hasnt achieved a tenth of what he had
