Upson back with Seagulls
Albion have signed free agent Matt Upson on a one-year deal.
He met up with Oscar Garcia’s squad today and will join them on their trip to Spain next week.
The former England defender was a big success after signing on loan for the final 20 games of last season.
His steadying inflence helped the Seagulls climb to fourth in the Championship and establish the best defensive record in the division in the regular season.
Upson’s return means Albion now have four central defenders on board after Adam El-Abd signed a new two-year deal last Friday.
Gordon Greer is fully fit after a knee operation at the end of last season and Lewis Dunk is now free of off-field worries.
David Burke, Albion’s head of football operations, said: “We are delighted that Matt has agreed to come back to the club. His experience is fantastic and it really shows our intent by bringing in someone of Matt’s pedigree.
“It’s not like he’s a new signing because he’s been with us for almost six months and he knows exactly what we are all about.
"He brings continuity and stability to the defence, which is what we were looking for, and it bodes well for us to keep the strong defence that we had last season.”
